Coarse, sticky, white head held in place throughout all of my glasses due do rather fiercely rising carbonation. Brett, floral hops, under ripe pear, yeast, a delicate, sweet pale malt, and dried tarragon round our the nose. Aroma is reflected in the flavor profile, though it is slightly more bready than one would believe. Nice bitterness & herbal hop character. Light, cottony mouthfeel from the fine, yet persistent carbonation. Body, too, is on the lighter end of the spectrum.

Wow, this is a good one. Though it’s been a recent favorite of mine, I haven’t gotten around to reviewing it. I can’t wait to taste what’s next in this line.

Appearance--Pours a clear, apricot gold into a tulip glass, topped by a large, two finger mound of whipped cream style head. Retention is very good and sheet lacing is all over the sides of the glass.
Aroma--Complex and inviting, with fruity kiwi, banana, bubblegum, floral and herbal hops, and a strong note of funky barnyard.
Mouthfeel--Effervescent carbonation is somewhat cottony, and the body is medium.
Taste--Oaky and woodsy, with fruity pear and nectarine accents. Some harsh Brett notes are odd, like sucking on gravel. The floral notes really set this one apart, with herbal bitterness and a rosehips chewiness. Lambic and geuze notes are everywhere, as well. Becomes dryer and more herbally bitter toward the finish, and some warming alcohol makes a rude appearance. Kiwi notes reapear at the end to smooth off the rough edges.
Drinkability--Not an extreme departure from a Belgian Strong Pale Ale, but the Brett notes certainly crank up the palate here. This one is an exciting sipping experience with all kinds of surprises. Love the Bosch label art. Be naughty and try one of these!

Hazed pineapple color, later glasses from the 750 ml get more opaque. Crystalline sugary head of good size and replenished by upcharging bubbles at the margins. Very delicate laces and nice coverage all over the glass. Deep aroma, burnished mink-oiled leather, distinct yeast, strong apricot with cinnamon. Solid mouthfeel with light pin-prick carbonation. Impressive flavor, soaked wood chips, oaky, long-fermented sweet and sticky pectin-rich fruit. The close is actually quite bitter in an alkoloid floral manner, hits like a door shutting or a broom sweeping through. Its hard not to like a brew that features this brand of sweetness, funkiness, and such a good attenuating finish. Its just got a better profile than things that strike me as somewhat similar in some aspects like Biere de Miel Biologique. Its strong but pretty drinkable as well.

Appearance brings mainly cloudy orange gold, with a few olive hued-wood like tones, topped by a giant dense finely foamy white head. Once the head dies down there's a steady 1/4 inch of fluff remaining with some straggly lace stuck behind. Smell is pretty vast to say the least. I smell lemony roses, heavily fragrant flowers, farm aromas and orchards combined. Apples, pears, passionfruit, cranberry, or basically the countryside covered in fruit and flowers as sprnig turns to summer. Sweet homemade biscuits, doughy bread, all sorts of yeasty esters, syrupy lemon, and fresh sugar cookies all come to mind. Very aromatically sniffable. Taste is sweet, fruity and ultra flowery also. A crazy fresh combination of pleasant late spring flavors. Everything intermingles very smoothly in a crazy extensive way. Texture is smooth, creamy, soft, and coating. Very pleasant to consume in every way.

This is one of those beers that paints an image in my mind of a big field packed with tall grass, and everything that's alive is happy, flowering and/or jumping around. Can't complain about that.

Immense head that relinquishes its hold very, very slowly. Cloudy pale golden hue. The usual Belgian lace clings to the glass.

Horseblanket and goaty aromas assault the nose along with cheesy and plum notes.

Taste is actually more subdued than the aroma. Alcohol warmth, grassiness, a bit of peach, very yeasty. I'd call it seriously infected if it were one of my homebrews. Winey, fruity notes A little cidery. Lingering tannic astringent bite, just a bit. Finishes more promising than it started.

Man, that horsey nose! Other than to share it with wild-Belgian-loving or wild-Belgian-curious folks, I would not buy this (again)* [my significant other bought this bottle for me for Christmas*}.

One of the wild ales, and less wild than the others although the aroma is of gym socks, this is quite tasty orange and some tartness. Unique and quite quaffable. Some sugar and yeast and mellowing in the basement all adds to a smooth ride. Translucent colour.

This stunning Belgian ale combines a standard Belgian yeast strain with Brettanomyces to give it depth of flavor, and a balancing "dryness". It's hazy golden body appears orangeish in the goblet, and teems with life as its very-fine bubbles race to the surface. The creamy white head holds quite well, and it leaves large, oddly shaped splashes of lace at the outset of the glass. The nose offers Brettanomyces upfront before allowing its sugary, candy-like, and mildly tart maltiness to come through. It's very interesting as the Brett delivers just enough "horse blanket" to entice you without taking you too far into the muddy barnyard. This is obviously a beer that's very well controlled, either through blending or a secondary pitching of bacterias, or more simply, the use of just 100% Brettanomyces to ferment! It's initially cotton-candyish in the mouth before giving the tongue a quick caress of lightly prickly zest. The body is medium-light, but it's "full" in the mouth as it warms to become airy. The flavor is much as the aroma suggests, with a mild tartness and Brett character upfront; followed by candy sweetness that has a fruity middle running through it; and then a drying, Brett-enhanced finish. Alcohol pokes it's head in a bit, but never really makes it's way throught the doorway; and the bitterness is limited. It simply slides away in the finish with the basic overall character of the beer lingering on the palate. It's full flavored and somewhat complex, but not "rich". Nor should it be. It's very drinkable as is! (And as an aside, the choice of Bosch for the labels seems more than appropriate - ;)

Corked and caged 750ml bottle poured into a large tulip glass. After popping the synthetic cork, the beer pours a dark golden orange color with a large white head. The aroma is complex and extremely enticing. The aroma possesses some malt, citrusy fruits, spices and yeast. The taste is malty with some spices dancing on the tongue along with a quick bite of earthy hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is light but sharp and prickly from the high amounts of carbonation. Overall, this is another really nice brew from this brewery that is recommended.

Pours a clear golden with a thick white head that lingers for the entire session. Heavy lacing is left on the glass. Looks beautiful in the glass.

The Brett funk is evident from the first whiff. Typical barnyard/horse blanket aromas dominate over the fruit smells. If I concentrate on the smell I gan detect notes of green apple and a light spiciness. Alcohol is not detected.

The taste is also very funky. More funk but I do detect some sweetness from the malt with apple like fruit notes. Some alcohol is detected. Has a lingering musty aftertaste.

Medium body with low carbonation that does not get in the way of consumption. Very nice mouthfeel.

This beer is too funky for my tastes. I think the funkiest I ever tasted. If you are into that sort of thing then this beer might be right up your ally. It has a high ABV which limits consumtion. It is also somewhat expensive so it won't be a beer I will likely revisit.

Every time I open one from this series, it's a wild ride.

Spoon Whacker seems to be full of Brett in the nose, really a strong yeast smell too, that you might find in rising bread. Brett has a pineapple/melon character, with a good dose of spice as well. Dull pale orange, floaties on the second pour. Tons of lace, first pour had a two inch head.

Bready flavors, spicy with wild yeast, dry and funky aftertaste. Some bitterness in the middle from the aged hops. Mineral water, wet stone, stale bread, funky cheese. The underlying pale ale is sturdy with ample carbonation. Easy to sip, the bottle is gone in an hour. Yet another interesting variety in the Flemish Primitive series.

750 ml bottle from Hi Time Wine in Costa Mesa, CA., price note recorded; May 2008.

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow-golden with a frothy-fluffy but not overpowering white head. And then for good measure, the head sticks around with style throughout the session, through several top-offs. Just beautiful.

Aroma is just wow- a nicely balanced Brett funk with all the beery goodness one can ask for. A decent malt note, hops, and funk balance. Doesn't get much better.

Flavor follows through- I'm really liking this one. All I can ask for from the style, really. A nice malt base, light and lemony, and a gentle (not overpowering) pepper and spice layer leave this one really enjoyable.

Nice and creamy mouthfeel, just a bit over-carbonated, but that is a quibble.

Easily my favorite of the style so far, probably because it is easy to get my arms around. This one is much more balanced than others in the style (although others may call this more simple or plain, I just like it better).

Pours a slightly hazed golden color with a few dark bits of yeast floating around. A large, lumpy white head forms on top dropping to a blanket of soapy bubbles, leaving behind light rings of lace. There's a good bit of funkiness central to the aroma...pale malt base and an Orval-like, perfumy floral character. Pale dried fruits, powdered sugar, even some butterscotch can be stirred up. I cannot stop smelling this beer. The flavor starts with a pale, dry fruitiness reminiscent of melons. Some sourness mingles with grain, though less funky than the smell. Hints of lemon-tinged sugar cookies. Smooth medium body - very easy to drink considering the 9% abv. There's loads of yeast all over this beer. A very nice, happy, warm weather beer - funky.

Pours crystal clear into my La Fin tulip. Nice golden color with mild carbonation rising. Great looking head, bright white and sticky with lacing. The aroma is earthy with tart fruit (apple peels, green grapes, cherries). Sticky sugar in the background as well. The taste is much more mild than I had expected. Well-rounded flavor with a completely unoffensive pale malt base. Sweet and tart fruit come out in the pallet as well as a light hopping. There is little-to-no brett funk in this. I was expecting something more sour and bitter, but this is still a pleasant surprise and a well rounded Belgian golden ale. I would call it a wild tripel.

Pours a hazy light orange color with a dense creamy white head that falls slowly, fed by steady supply of rising bubbles. Some decent lace left behind on my glass.

Aroma is very tart acidic fruit strawberries, bananas, lots of mixed citrus on a good malt base funk and spice peppered thru out.

Taste is tart fruit on bready malt that pops up here and there mixed with spice. Good amount of hop flavors grassy let week old hay earthy musty dirt. Apricots, orange peel, strawberreis lots of bret in this one. Fruity moves to tart lemon/grapefruit rinds mingled in the finish with the grassy hops and earthy notes.

Mouthfeel is medium good carbonation but not explosive like the Surly Bird, actually the feel a little more then medium.

Drinkability is good this is one nice treat of sourness, fruity and funky a good earthy wild ale.

poured straight from the cellar which is mid-60s this time of year.

fat froth rises quickly and forms into a misshapen meringue. Wow, that's freakin' amazing: this slightly hazy and very golden beer is sitting in a large tulip giving off a stream of carbonation in the shape of a tornado from the base of the glass to the remnants of a tight meringue.

the aroma is citrusy and sweet, and reminds me of a small tropical greenhouse with blooms. Smells like mixed citrus curd in a vanilla crust, garnished with fresh flowers, and served by a hand with a finger wrapped in an antiseptic bandaid, and alcohol on the breath. Drunk baker.

Wait a second. What...??? That's dry and astringent with a memory of sugar like a mirage of water in the desert. Tastes like chalk and sand; tastes like steamed, dried lemon peels; tastes like medicine. You can pull my teeth now, my mouth is numb. This isn't tart its astringent like bark tea: Really strong slippery elm. Woof, woof it has a wet dog smell/taste. Ok, alright, it's a Belgian strong ale with wildness. I dig. I'm spanking my a** with a huge wooden spoon. It's not as good as the PIG-NUN; it doesn't tease me in the same way. I think it's kinda bland for all the spanking my palate has taken. It gets better the more I drink -- duh. I almost poured it, then I got drunk and I think I appreciated it. It leaves me feeling like I smoked some skunk. I did bake all night, and I poured this at 10 am.

750ml bottle purchased as a single somewhere in NoVA. Corked and caged.

Poured into a Rapscallion glass, formed a dense 1 1/2" white head above the slightly cloudy, bubbly dark golden brew. Head lasts and lasts, snow-coning above the rim of the glass, with heavy, if somewhat sporadic, foamy lacing. Aroma is spicy malts, with a carnival petting zoo funk going on. Taste is lightly of spicy malts, a citrus zing in the middle, and closes with a light alcohol note. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth, with great drinkability for the style. Well balanced, nice brew here.

Ok. After the third different bottle (I've had the Pig Nun and the Surly Bird) I definately am leaning towards thinking that these beers are all the same, just with different labels. With in the style, given the wild yeast, it'd be next to impossible to brew three different beers that taste this simillar yet are actually different brews. I wonder why each one is recognized on this site as an individual beer. Anyway, it's world class, baby. I'm not going to get into it here because that would be rediculous, I've already reviewed it, twice really. But when I was trying to put the pieces together there were no reviews that said blatantly "these are the same!" which was what I was looking for. So there you have it. Check out the other labels (Surly Bird, Pig Nun) if you really for some reason want to see what I thought about the beer specifically beyond the fact that it's awesome, and mysteriously haunting, which should really be all the incentive you need to go out and buy this thing. Go!! It's good! I promise!

hazed gold with a little suspended yeast, and a white head that doesn't hold up for too long.
tart pineapple, lemon and slightly turned (in good way) strawberry fruity nose. it's also got some nice floral aromas that mingle with the funky hay-horse blanket aromas, and a faint sweet smelling plastic. there is some bubblegum that comes out with a little warmth. the lemon also becomes a little creamy like a lemon square or something.
pineapple bubblegum flavor, mixing with strawberry, and a little bit of a cut grass flavor. a slightly peppery dry funkiness comes up to finish with a sort chalky quality. no booze detectable.
where the dryness doesn't work as well with the flavors as it does the mouthfeel, creating a fairly clean medium bodied actively, but also delicately carbonated beer.
nice drinkability. like i said, it finishes cleanly, which works well here. not a problem in the least finishing the bottle.

Pours a two finger, thick white head that barely fades leaving gobs of lace. Cloudy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Lemony nose. Starts sweet and sour with a brandy flavor, 35IBU is just right, finish is spicey and prickly, good beer. $10.05 for a 750ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

It's not very wild, but there's certainly a little more funk than you'd find in a typical strong pale ale.

A: Very hazy, dirty straw colour, off-white head, some retention and lace.

S: Cidery, earthy, mild barnyard funk, slightly catty.

T: Cidery, grassy straw, slightly earthy, vanilla, light tartness.

M: Moderate body & carbonation, well-attenuated, slightly dry finish.

D: Quite drinkable for a Flemish style (though certainly not as drinkable as some strong pale ales).

bottle shared with a few folks, and if i could rate the entertainment value of saying "spoon whacker" out loud and looking at the comical label, the score on this beer would rise infinitely.

hazy piss yellow with floaters and some surface bubbly. babe-like barnyard aroma.. closest thing ive ever smelt to an actual barnyard without evoking a sense-memory near-match. not "barnyard," but BARNYARD. lots of lactose in the aroma contributes. lambicy. additional aromas can only be described as cow, pig and horse. oh, and maybe a sweaty nun's ass getting beaten with a spoon.

tastes extremely bitter with that sourness we all love.. bacterial and strangely refreshing. this version of the flemish wild by de proef comes dangerously close to some other, more famous lambics whose name i wont mentillion. heavy botanical.. light hint of strawberries. citrus hint. much mellower than the surly bird, which is like a fresher, fizzier version of this fine beer.

Strong tart aroma of fresh lemons over spring flowers. Huge resinous white colored head looks like pocked meringue leaves some full . Dark hazy straw colored beerr with a few streams of tiny bubbles rising gently through the middle. I let this sit for about 15 minutes before I opened it, and yet I can barely taste anything. The finish is the most dominant as a light bitterness fades in along with a mild alcohol taste. The mouthfeel is soft and light, but the lack of flavor makes it almost watery. There are some faint creamy/yeast flavors up front and some fruity notes (plum?). It smells like some Saisons and Witbiers I've had, and the taste finished like some of the biggest Quads. The taste is a bit out-of-whack, and not as enjoyable as it could be, plus I think it's eating my stomach (ouch).

20 minutes after opening:
Aroma is more sour then zesty lemon. The finish has mellowed and the flavors are picking up. There is a bit of sour cherry up front (not the nasty cough syrup type). I'm halfway through the bottle, just ate dinner an hour ago, but I feel like I just drank two pints on an empty stomach. I get different flavors on different sips, which is quite interesting. I'd recommend drinking this between cellar and room temperature, and no where near cold (freakish mix of bitterness and alcohol makes it taste like I just downed a shot of Absolut).

Final beer of a huge tasting. Thanks everyone for bringing such fantastic stuff!

If I had known this one was called "Spoon Whacker" I might have paid more attention. As it is, I enjoyed it, but didn't get a lot out of it (at least, according to my notes). Tart, if mild aroma, and only mildly sour flavour. One thing that stood out to me was that the flavour had pineapple juice elements in it, which is something I have never tasted before in a beer.

Other than that, we'll let the numbers speak for themselves.
