on tap at Lucky Labrador Barleywine and Big Beer Festival 3/ 8/2009.

Creamy white fairly rocky head over clear orange body. A bit of honeysuckle in the nose, with mandarin orange with minimal spice on the tastebuds and a fairly clean, though a bit pheolic finish. Nice balance between hops and malt, not too assertive in either direction. Very drinkable for the ABV, and a nice advent to Duvel, etc. Definitely worth seeking out as is anything that it's namesake is affiliated with.

Served in a tulip yesterday at the Brick Store Pub. Really gorgeous cloudy light orange, with a pretty white foamy head. Aromas of funky brett, green apple and spice. Taste was very light and refreshing. Really balanced with all that was going on in there: funk, hops, spice, touch of fruit. Semi-dry in the mouth and finished very smooth. Could not get over how balanced and enjoyable this beer was.

8.5%? Would have never have guessed it.

Served in a tulip glass at Hopleaf 12/27/07.

A: Hazy golden-amber color sporting a small, creamy, off-white head.

S: I was struck, right off the bat, by the damp, funky, Chicago basement aroma going on here. Also noticed was some light citrus, and fruity esters.

T: Same as above with some spicy hops and tangy fruit.

M: Medium bodied. Spicy and peppery.

D: Slightly on the mild side, but very good, nonetheless. Nice.

A- Murky golden straw hue, thin layer of white head, slight lacing
S- Wonderful bouquet of fruit aromas including berries, honey, pineapple, apples, lemon, some subtle bread malts and belgian yeast
T- Consistent with smell, initial taste is sweet fruits, citrus, and sugary malts, opens up to biscuit malts and finishes dry
M- Light-bodied, watery texture, light carbonation
D- Delicious and easy to drink, very well balanced between the sweet fruits and subtle malts

Live reviewed from Collins Pub in Seattle that finally got this on tap after weeks of waiting.

Served up in a small tulip, body is foggy amber, on the dark side for a 'pale belgian'. Head is feisty on the pull and falls fast. Lace, however, is a solid wall of white.

Smell is maddeningly forest-like. Tons of piney hops and an earthy, dank yeast. Some mineral water and starfruit if you really huff it.

Taste is significantly spicier and maltier. Chives and corriander. Medium roast malt in moderation. Hops gain a citric note and the bite of acid. Yeast opens up to more farmhouse and less funk.

Very drinkable for the hophead as there is sufficient body to balance. Very full and tart,, nothing light or mellow. Booze adds literal fire to the heat. Mouthfeel is a touch coating, as you'd expect. Can't imagine the carbonation being any higher, but it's just sufficient.

Glad I finally got to try out this cross-Atlantic collaboration. It's an American microbrew twist on your basic Belgian ale, and it works - the hops we yanks have come to crave on a crazy, candied Bel.

11.2 oz bottle was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: It is a murky reddish brown color that poured a two finger off white head. It has some clarity when held up to a light and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Nice spotty lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Tart, apples, pears, grapes, funk, spices, caramel, toffee, bready, and vanilla.

Taste: The sweetness of the malts comes out first followed by slight tart and funky flavors with spices and other above mentioned flavors in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, a little dry, tingly bitterness, full bodied, sweet, tart, chewy, and medium carbonation.

Overall: This beer rocks. I think it is in a category of it's own. Solid stuff and will have to find more bottles of this collaboration beer.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip
A: Muddy brown with bits of yeast floating around and a very thin head that disappears in a flash
S: Very malty, somewhat sweet (like simple syrup), a cheese note, a hint of strawberry/spice. Fairly complex, but not sure how well it all works together
T: As much as the A/S are perhaps a bit off, here it all comes together and quite nicely. Big malt flavors up front, and tastes like freshly dried grain. That's followed by some fruit esters which are immediately followed by a nice yeasty/cheesy note, then some additional grain/herbs and a nice finish
M: Light to medium-bodied, a pleasant carbonation & crispness
O: Don't judge a book by its cover. I was wondering where the overall BA score came from when I first poured/smelled this... one taste and it makes sense. Well made & a very pleasant beer to drink

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/13/2010. No pop of the cork upon opening. Pours very hazy red-orange color with a small fairly dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of pear, apple, grape, peach, orange, floral, caramel, honey, bread, light pepper, clove, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity brett notes with balanced hop and malt notes. Taste of pear, apple, grape, peach, orange, pineapple, floral, caramel, honey, bread, toffee, light pepper, clove, and yeast earthiness. Very slight fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, floral, caramel, honey, bread, toffee, clove, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity hop/yeast notes with well balance malt sweetness; with no cloying flavors present after the finish. Light carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is actually quite good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian strong pale ale, despite lack of carbonation. Very nice complexity and balance of fruity and malty flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

a beer i thought i had had before... or at least remember it having a distinctly different more spicy qualities when fresh. an older bottle the yeast really take on an effect. pour is nice and lacy orange cloudiness. nose of orange blossom hopping, breadiness and yeastiness... camembert notes. plate is floral and orange sweet. clove hints and mineral dry. noble bittering. wonderful beer with a dynamic spicy, yeast and hop combination. one of a kind.

A: Pours a hazy to cloudy dark golden yellow to orange in color - similar to the color of apple cider. The beer has a quarter finger tall off-white head that reduces to an extremely thin film in a medium sized patch and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of malty sweetness - primary notes are those of toffee.

T: This beer has quite a bit of malty sweetness with both toffee and caramel notes present. Light spice notes contributed from the yeast and slight notes of brett.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Hints of dryness in the finish.

O: Very malty for this style of beer but this is a very good and interesting beer to try... Very much a sipping beer.

A: The beer is cloudy brownish yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down but never completely faded away.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of toffee in the nose.
T: The taste has a bit of sweetness with flavors of caramel and toffee from the malts along with notes of spices from the hops and slight hints of sourness form the brettanomyces.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a hint of dryness in the finish.
O: This beer is a lot maltier compared to other beers but this makes it very flavorful.

Poured into a stemmed Gulden Draak tulip: Murky burnt orange body under a finger of fluffy, dough-colored head with some floating sediment & lots of tight nucleation strands.

Smells of baked apple, a little baking spice, some pineapple, kind of a cakey bread. Actually, the closest comparison I can come to is the smell of Apple Newtons. Pretty nice.

Taste follows suit, leading with fruit (apple, white grape juice, pineapple), moving into an herbal & candy-ish flavor, like Ricola, rounding off with more baked, cakey character, & ushering in a moderate dry booze heat. The aftertaste is pretty dry but with the baking spice going on again, with just a touch of stoney, mineral, & funky that I get from brett a lot. Gains some citrus notes further in.

Medium-full-bodied, kind of chewy, you can roll it around on your tongue. The heat & growing attack from alcohol becomes a little formidable, but doesn't spoil the experience.

Some challenges, definitely a lot of recognizable qualities that ground it while pulling it a little in the direction of more experimental beers. Reminds me of a slightly mutated Unibroue Raftman, which I love.

Amber with an opaque center. Fair retention and a few polka dots of foam.

Smells unmistakably like banana bread. Banana bread with a mango twang. Tastes like it smells. Not overwhelmingly hoppy but a good amount of resin the body.

If I had to take a blind guess at the style I would have guessed a citrusy wit rather than a Brett infused Belgian pale.

De Proef Reserve Signature Ale (w/ Tomme Arthur)

Pours a cloudy peach color, decent bubbly head and retention. Aromas of bread, fruit, Belgian yeast, alcohol and brett traces.
In the taste, unripe apple, apricot, yeasty funk, mild wild, light citrus hops. Fairly sweet and shows some alcohol strength. Moderate earthy bitterness, and finishes bitter sweet. Medium body with a drying finish. Overall, a well made beer not lacking in character. I would consider this a Belgian Imperial IPA.

One of my wife's friends' husband gave this to me as a Christmas present. Wow!

This is presently #9 in the Belgian Strong Pale Ale category here on BA.

Corked and caged. The cork itself looked like it was made of a styrophome material. Weird...

Minor thud on the pop...

A: Not copper, note bronze, but a rather attractive gold color, majorly cloudy.... by the way, with a massive off-white head that clung to the glass and then some.

S: Lots of hops, fruit, and PEZ candy notes for sure. STRONG candy with a little bit of Belgian funk, but not too much.

T: OMG, what a cocophany of flavor here! I got sort of a gourmet BBQ sauce sort of aftertaste here, with lots of Belgian yeast bright candy sugar, and tons of colorful hops as well. Belgian + American brewing technique medley was definitely prevelant.

M: My glass looks like it just went through a used car wash, and my palate has been wrecked...jeez. Sugar/hop/belgian funk profile for sure, but the carbonation level was great in spite of all of this weirdness.

O: I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was. Definitely more American than Belgian, but since I live in (and work for) the US of A, I can't complain...

Look awesome. Nice thick and dense head. Clear amber body. Head laces the glass. Aesthetically pleasing beer.Has a barnyard darker musky funk. Really unique but kind of strange. The taste I find to be much more approachable than the aroma. Solid maltiness, w/ what I believe is a tart wild yeast finish. Smooth , especially considering ABV. Bitterness is suiting. Body isn't bone dry as expected, still a touch of body left. I'm always down for some real sour; so I find this to be a bit mild. Highly drinkable beer. Quality, unique, and enjoyable.

Didn't live up to the hefty price, still good though.

A: 2 fingered, cream colored, frothy head with good retention and loads of lacing. Body was murky orange, completely opaque, and full of tiny bubbles.

S: Citrus notes, grapefruit, banana, herbs, and spices.

T: Very similar to the scent, mixes well with the relatively high ABV.

M: Medium bodied, well carbonated.

O: Enjoyed the brew, would happily drink again if someone offered me a glass.

Appearance: A nice offwhite head with good retention. The beer is an opaque light amber color. Good looking Belgium ale.

Smell: very subtle notes all around, the nose on this is not strong in the least bit. First on the nose is light malt, then some banana esters and finishing with some very light earthy hops.

Taste: Malty sweet breadness with some definite banana and heat and finishing with some hoppy acidity.

Mouthfeel: Nice and smooth with a mellow carbonation.

Overall: This is a decent Belgium style ale. The american hop side of the beer doesn't really compliment it well though in my opinion.

AGED REVIEW

This one was also in the basement since 2008. I pulled it up for opening today because my other De Proef collaboration bottle from 2008 (the Allagash one) turned out to be either infected or over-aged when I tried it two days ago... so I got really concerned about this one.

(Short version : This one is still pretty damn good but showing initial signs of decline that lead me to estimate it as a couple months past its cellaring apex for my particular tastes)

A: Cloudy, murky, yet sediment chunk-free dark burnt orange color with one finger of cream-colored soapy foam in my tulip glass. Foam is short-lived, mediocre lacing left behind.

S: Initial bottle-opening odor of sour pineapple hops fades away quickly, only leaving behind its residual tartness in the flavor. Smells mostly like pine resin bitterness, but partially like those individually-wrapped strawberry candies and sour cherries with some more yeast esters on top.

T: Loads of doughy and belgian yeasty flavors, sticky toffee that has been rolled around in pine needles, I am still getting a hint of semi-sour strawberries and cherries rather than the usual suspects of dark fruits, which is rather surprising. There are also some minor leathery oxidation tones (nice!)... Oh yeah, and a mild beginning of the plastic-y creeping band-aid doom flavor that had completely saturated and ruined the other De-Proef collaboration bottle for me... I estimate I should have cracked this bottle open a couple of months ago by the progression of this off-flavor. That interesting subtle semi-spoiled pineapple aspect from the aged citric hops sticks around evenly throughout all aspects of the sip, despite having faded from the smell...it makes a really nice decorative frame for the picture that is the overall flavor.

M: Sort of sticky in texture, medium-full bodied, lightly carbonated but I can excuse that since this bottle is from 2008. Nothing annoying to speak of in this category.

Worth my cellaring efforts, it seems to have gently magnified the tart/wild ale aspects of this brew which were originally only of garnishment strength into minor sub-category strength. If I were to do it again I would aim for about 2-2.5 years of time rather than 3.

I have had this bottle for about a year now in the cellar. It was time to savor the aging of the belgian characteristics.

I poured aggresively from the bottle into a snifter glass. I wanted to get a lot of aroma from this beer to smell both styles in the collaboration.

I picked up a lot of belgian on the pour. There was sour, raisin, and yeastiness. Also present was some hop smell.

The beer was good, but it smelled so much better. There was some heavy alcohol in the flavor.

This was a good experience to be a part of. Thank you.

A- Color is a fairly clear amber. Poured gently into a glass reveals a full finger of creamy foam that leaves spotty lacing around the glass. Not much though.

S- Ripe tropical fruit, caramel malts, brown sugar and a bit of belgian yeast spice.

T- Soft malty tropical fruit with a mellow peppery finish. Very sweet. Not much hop presence to speak of.

M- Creamy, sweet, with medium carbonation. kind of a muddled sweet mess, I really like belgian pales that are drier.

O- Being a huge fan of the style, this was good to experience, it wasnt my favorite, but i was happy to try it nonetheless.

Pours a dirty medium brown orange tint with a merengue like head leaving thick sticky lacing. The nose has bright citrus, sour berry, slight earthy funk, sour cherry and almost a champagne like minerality. The taste brings bready malts, light belgian spices (clove, white pepper), lemon zest, and raspberry tart. The beer has nice acidity along with a nice carbonated zip. Well done and interesting for the style.

Poured from a bomber into an oversized wine glass.

A - A dark golden azure color with a creamy large white head with a good amount of lace.

S - An earthen floral aroma with some spice that is mixed with some candi sweet sugar notes that bring some slight fruits in.

T & M & D - A pretty good balance the mimics the nose. The Earthen airy floral notes blend with some sweet fruits and it is cut by a barnyard funk middle. The full bodied nature of the beer makes the flavors bold and the high carbination cleans the palate on the finish making the abv subtle and the drinkability high.

O - A good funky belgium dark with wild qualities. The sweetness could be a little overwhelming at times but the earthen spicy notes along with the tart cut help balance the beer.

750ml bottle purchased a Binny's a while back. Served in a Surly Darkness snifter. Batch #2.

A - A careful pour yields a finger of late-rising creamy light tan foam that settles to a near-complete cap and thick collar, but leaves behind a few spots of lace. Body is an opaque amber/cider copper color with streams of tiny bubbles throughout.

S - Large apple and toffee malt backbone, some light tropical and slightly rotten fruit funk, candi sugar, honey, grass and hay, estery yeast, and light alcohol is present. I think this bottle is pretty old, but it didn't get overly funky - just lost the hops.

T - Taste is somewhat similar, with plenty of caramel apple and brown sugar malts and a peppery yeast character, light tropical fruits, as well as a lightly sour/tart finish and bitter herb/medicinal aftertaste. Alcohol is better hidden than in the aroma.

M - Medium-full, chewy and viscous body, with light carbonation tingle. Finish is surprisingly dry for such a sweet beer, and there are plenty of residual resinous hop oils. There is some warming alcohol, but no harsh or solvent notes.

D - I suspect this was more interesting when it was hoppy and fresh, as it's now it's overly sweet with only light funk and sourness. I wish there were actual bottle dates rather than batch codes, but this is nearly three years old as far as I can tell. That being said the beer matches the description on the bottle pretty closely - I guess I just don't dig this combination of flavors. I labored through about 375ml before using the rest for cooking.

Poured into a Saint Arnold’s sniffer, thanks texasclimber for sharing this one

Appearance: Brownish-copper with a white head about a finger thick. The head recedes to a ring around the side of the glass.

Aroma: Spicy with a touch of funk and apples, nothing out of control.

Taste: zesty and tart, but not overwhelmingly tart or sour, balanced nicely with a malty sweetness and dark fruit subtly.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation that finishes sweet and slightly sour.

Overall: This beer was the surprise of the night. The others were expected to be good, but no one knew anything about this beer. We were all pleasantly surprised and I would buy it again if I could find it.
