750 ml bottle dated best before 1/4/12 poured into a goblet.

Pours a very hazy reddish brown with a thick soupy off white head.

Smell is a sweet, malty, piny, grapefruity, pineapple, and some ripe fruit. Not too flanders red ale. More like a wild ale.

Taste is not sour. Biscuity sweet with some dry yeasty, breadiness.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall this is more like a belgian ipa than a flanders red ale. I am glad it was only 7.49 at my local abc.

This is an interesting beer,its NOT anything like a Imperial Flanders Red in my mind,the bottle is a little confusing.Pourred into a chalice at Vintage 301 a deeply hazed amber/copper color with a real well defined one finger slight off white head that held well.Alot of caramel in the nose with a tinge of vanilla,a healthy dose of citrusy hops as well,the funk is light but is noticeable.While the flavor of the beer is pretty good it seemed to lack a little in complexity,there is a big shot of piney hop along with some caramel malt,but it seemed to kinda fizzle out after that,light phenols emerge after a bit but they dont add or subtract much to the beer.Its a pretty good beer if you take it for what it is,but it lacks a little complexity like mentioned before.

Moderately low carbonation and head of tight, light tan bubbles. Caramel color.

Deep caramel aroma with candied sweetness mingling well with a subtle but ever-present hop character. Butterscotch, with a very slight lactic, barnyard note around the edges. Orange rind and prune comes forth with warmth. Pleasant, mysterious.

Tastes like a malty imperial red with a heavy dose of caramel malts, American citrus hops but just to balance, and just a hint of funk on the finish, seemingly in a stage of infancy. Despite my intentions on aging this one, it didn't last more than a couple weeks in my fridge...Cherry and milk chocolate also come to mind.

Soft, smooth mouthfeel with a bit of prickly hop flavor.

A nice majestic brew, well-crafted but seems a little pedestrian for the price tag. A year or two of cellaring might make this special.

Poured into a tulip

Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1/2 inch head, reddish brown in color, cloudy

Smell: big apples and figs, little sour smell

Taste: hops, light oak, a touch of fig, and Belgian spices

Mouthfeel: Bitter start, sour middle, with a super bitter end, high carbonation, light body

Overall: This is exactly what I would expect from a collaboration between these two breweries--a nice Belgian beer with some big hops. This one is super unique and sure to please fans of both breweries. That said for the price, I will not be purchasing this one again. I do not think this works as a Flanders Red, but as a Strong Ale maybe a solid 3.5.

The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is vanilla, caramel malt and some very light tartness. The flavor is caramel malt and alcohol with some light tartness. Medium to thick mouthfeel and low to medium carbonation. For a beer that says Imperial Flanders Red Ale on the label, I really expected more tartness.

Dark cherry red and amber with a thin khaki colored head. Spots and lines of lacing left down the glass.

Muted and muddy aroma. A piney hop aroma and caramel malt are surprisingly dominant, even if faint. There's a slight hint of sweet fruits and a very mild tartness, but nothing as electrifying or exciting compared to others Flanders reds.

Very muddy flavor. The hops are earthy, the caramel malt is dominant, the fruit flavor is very mild, and its all encompassed with a very mild sour tartness. Disappointing.

Medium to thick mouthfeel--a little too thick and viscous for the style, though it doesn't particularly detract from the beer.

A very average, muddy Flanders red.

On-Tap at Trappeze Pub in Athens during the Monstre Rouge launch party. This is a collaboration between Terrapin and DeProef.

Pours a dark red/brown with a big fluffy head and lots of lacing. Quite nice to look at.

The nose screams IPA. Sweet malts and big hops. What in the wide world of sour ales is going on here?

Okay, so this beer is marketed as an "Imperial Flanders Ale," but I'm not getting anything near a Flanders from it. I even checked with the server to make sure I had the right beer. She confirmed my tastebuds and said it tasted like hopsecutioner to her. To me, it is more of a standard IIPA. A nice solid bitter hop blast up front, and lingering malt sweetness in the back. None of the nuances or complexity I expected from the style. I hate rating it so low, as it is a nice tasting beer - but it's not what I expected for the style.

Mouth is nice, well carbonated. It goes down smooth.

Overall, a tasty brew, just not a Flanders Red, IMHO. It is well worth drinking, just don't expect tart/funky flavors.

Very dry finish reminiscent of dry red wine.

Pours a hazy dark copper color with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of grainy caramel malts with hints of candied and lightly tart medium fruits - apricots and pears. Also present are mild amounts of leafy hop aromas.

Tastes OK. Mildly dry caramel malt flavors kick things off and are quickly joined by moderate amounts of leafy and somewhat earthy hop flavors. Midway through the sip very light hints of candied medium fruit flavors work their way into things, carrying through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is OK. I finished my glass without a problem however I'm not sure about another.

Overall the bottle version is cleaner and has more characteristics of the style than the tap version I had earlier but it still doesn't quite fit the bill. Hopefully this one will improve as it ages.

A- This beer has a dense reddish-brown hazy glow and a bubbly yellowish-tan head that last a bit. There is a strong carbonation of bubbles that race to the surface.
S- The pine hops give way to layers of caramel with a buttery quality and some malt sweetness that finishes with a tartness and oak blend. There is a slight bad breath quality to the finish which is a bit odd but interesting.
T- The oak barrel and spicy malt rye give way to the pine hops with a hoppy bite at the finish. There is a caramel malt flavor that grows as the beer opens up. The finish is a rye spice with some grapefruit brett qualities. There is also a cheese rind note in the finish that turns into a fish oil quality as the beer warms. The hop bite lingers after the finish.
M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with no alcohol heat.
D- The big caramel malt has lots of unique flavors supporting it. There are hops, brett, rye and oak all working together. It is like drinking the crowd at a Dave Mathews concert. Some flavors work together with the music and some are just embarrassing. The hops and bretty grapefruit are interesting but as the beer opens up the hops get a bit too brassy and I need a water chaser to finish this beer.

Dark brown ith some reddish highlights. Smoke and roast along with the malt in the aroma. A little sour, woody.Smooth mouthfeel. Aged somewhat since brewed which may have mellowed the hops.

De Proef Brouwerij, "Monstre Rouge - Imperial Flanders Red Ale"
750 ml bottle, corked & caged

Appearance: Cloudy, russet brown body with orange and gold highlights. Creamy light tan head with average retention but nice lacing.

Smell: Malty and hoppy with notes of grain, bread, caramel, brown sugar, pine, leaves/underbrush, and a bit of citrus rind.

Taste: I really like the malt flavor on this one. It's very rich, and it makes me think of Munich malt, but it's also got a bit of a spicy edge to it (of course, that might be the hops talking!). It's more malty and hoppy than I expected for an "Imperial" Flanders red, but you do get a bit of the Brettanomcyes with its tang, leather, and mustiness in the finish so I guess the tag still works. Perhaps it will dry a bit with age, thinning the malt out a bit, and I would hope, also softening the hops because I personally feel they're a little strong for the "Flanders red" designation (even if it is "Imperial"). Additionally, I think it needs a bit of time for the yeast to sediment out. Other than that, it's a well-made, rich and hoppy but still balanced ale. It's solidly bitter and it's got a nice bit of oaky dryness to it that leaves you ready to take another sip.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Creamy smooth with just enough tickle from the carbonation to keep it alive.

Overall: Interesting, and certainly worth trying to be sure.

About .75 fingers of pale orangey head and the cloudy orange brown color that I associate with great beer. Nice lacing.

A bit of tartness on the nose, but not nearly as much as you'd expect form a Flemish sour. Plenty of coconut... kind of a fruit punch? Possibly some pineapple.

Taste is pungent. Powerful coconut; this is dominant. A trace of pineapple and plenty of hop bitterness to balance out what would otherwise be syrupy piña colada flavour. Slightly raisiny. Not at all what I would've thought of for a Flemish sour, but unique and complex. The hops kind of takes over the aftertaste, cleaning up the finish at the expense of extra bitterness.

Mouthfeel is pleasant and creamy, but with some texture-- works well with the flavor.

Overall, this is a sipper. Not super-drinkable, but decently complex. Not something to pair with most foods, but I could see this for desert with yellow cake.

Monstre Rouge pours a dark copper color. It's flooded with haze. Backlighting reveals garnet highlights. A tan head stands about a finger and a half tall. Retention is quite good. This one hangs around for a while. Lacing was rather thick and sticky. Good lookin' stuff if you ask me.

The nose is very intriguing. It starts out with a very strong oak and vanilla presence. The base seems to be sweet caramel/toffee malts. The oak and vanilla scents mesh pretty well, but I wouldn't say they're a great complement to the malt base. There's no question that Brett is in the house. The funky, barnyard smell seems to be a little at odds with the other elements. There's a hint of some hops, but they're mostly lost in the mix. This stuff is complex and interesting, but doesn't really work that well. Pretty average.

The flavor performs a little better. It's still complex and a little convoluted, but it tastes better than it smells. Sweet caramel malts kick off the festivities. Brett funkiness jumps into the mix quick. I honestly don't think the malt/Brett combo works very well. It's alright, but is far from great. Oak and vanilla are secondary and add some character. Hops add a bit of a piney flavor, and dry it out quite a bit. I was expecting a tart or sour presence, but it's not really here. Odd for a Flanders Red. It's a little musky and earthy on the tail. Alcohol is blended well overall. Finishes dry, funky, and malty.

Monstre Rouge doesn't exactly have a monster body. It's on the lighter side of medium and feels too thin. Carbonation is active, but doesn't really hurt things. Drinkability is rather average. The flavor's okay, but it grows tiresome. A 750 is too much. I would've preferred a 500 ml bottle.

I had somewhat high expectations from this Terrapin/De Proef collaboration. It's just okay. I wouldn't characterize it as a Flanders Red. This is more of a funky Imperial Red Ale. It's an interesting idea in theory, but is just okay in practice. The funky Brett flavor is a little at odds with the malts and creates a weird flavor. Eh. If you're really interested, go for a single bottle.

Poured from a 750 into a snifter.

Very little head but a white lace remains the entire time. Nice dark red/brown color with a decent amount of carbonation but not completely opaque. Smells like roses, lemon, cake. Tastes like a slightly sour rotted lemon cake with some chocolate and this weird hoppy character. The little carbonation feels good until the taste comes back around. Hardly drinkable, but I did get it down. Would not recommend this to anyone.

A- Deep maroon color with some brown highlights. Small head that fades fast. The clarity is in the "murky" range.

S- Sweat, Pine, Prunes, Citrusy hops, perfume.

T- It tastes like Duchesse (sp?) mixed with a very astringent IPA or DIPA, then topped off with hairspray and nail polish remover. Absoulutely disgusting stuff and I want my $12 back.

M- Very highly carbonated, thin in the mouth, and astringent.

D- A drain pour. I've NEVER poured out a whole bottle of anything in all my years of brewing and tasting beers. This was my first.

I'm serious, this beer is a total mess with too many ingredients that dont work well together. Disgusting beer. I wish I would have never tried it.

Graciously split by an old college friend on New Years Eve. Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured a murky deep brown with a TON of sediment floating around and on the bottom with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, caramel, funk, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, citrus, slight hops, and funk. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall I was not really that impressed with this one. Just way too much skunky funk going on here. The other flavors were a little bit too sharp and harsh on the palate as well. Will it get more sour/tart with more age? I can only hope so... If not, my bottle that is in my cellar might end up going down the drain. Glad I was spliting this one...

Drove to a release party to try this beer. Was very excited, because Flanders Reds are some of my favorite beers. This beer, however, is not a Flanders Red. We actually had to check to make sure we had the right beer. Right color, right glass, wrong beer. Super hoppy, a ton of American Oak, tiny bit of Brett dryness, and NO sourness. Very disappointing. Nice beer, definitely would have enjoyed it under different circumstances, but name/style needs to be changed.

A: A deep burnt tomato red pour (think bloody mary) appears thick and turbid with a strong show of effervesce. The head is khaki with a rigid marshmellow texture that was incredibly well lasting. Large chunks of sticky foam adheres well to the glass. The head is fully lasting through the drink never lapsing more then a finger in height.

S: Malty upfront, dry with some celery and sun dried tomatos. Earhty with scents of dried stems and some vinous wine/grape notes. The strength was medium.

T: Malty almost with a fine silty powdery feel of dme fills the body with substance while some alcohol and citrus delivering a nice addition of hoppiness. Warming citrus, toasty oak chips, dried stemmy notes, and vinous grapes/wine notes appear with a touch of acidity on the finish. A total package of malts, hops and yeast.

M: Foamy and creaming up nicely on the hold. Good deal of carbonation brings some tingle to the palate. Full, malty and lush.

D: Drinks like a malty wine. Vinous notes with a residual malty body, citrus, and a warming bite of alcohol makes this a hearty big example and must try by style.

After trying this on tap and getting nothing but butterscotch, I was hesitant to open the bottle I had picked up previously. I'm happy to report it's far better than the tap sample I had.

Synthetic cork dated "01/04/12" and unusually long. Into a tulip this pours with a thick blanket of creamy, sticky foam. It laces all over the glass. A transparent skim is left after several minutes.

Resiny green hop aroma at first, segueing into sweet overripe fruit, oak traces, and unique Belgian yeast.

Very malt forward, spicy and bready rye and crystal malt, notes of citrus, toasted oak, and dried orange peel and bitter cranberry tannins. Lightly bitter aftertaste. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Fairly robust and malt driven. No hint of Brett mentioned on the label. Not hard to sip at all, just throw out any preconceived ideas or expectations of a Flanders ale.

This is obviously a "hybrid style" beer and no Flanders Red Ale at all. More an "Imperial American Red Ale" if splitting hairs. Slamming decent beers in reviews may be the trend du jour, but this one doesn't deserve it.

I had this at ChurchKey from their bottle list. Monster rouge is a tasty but slightly unusual Flanders red. Was the butterscotch flavour deliberate?

A: Dark orange with a head that fades quick. 4

S: Alcohol. Fruit. Spice. 4

T: Spicy cloves and alcohol with a slightly butterscotch finish and some sourness. 4

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Plastic composite cork (long one) in bottle with a weak pop upon removing. Pours a solid 2 fingers with uniform creamy looking bubbles. Off cream head manages to stay around pretty well. Body is a cloudy dark red/orange, with small yeast chunks floating around. Very good lacing sticking to the glass.

Bouquet is cream. Real nice cream with a small mellow cherry fruit nose. Good but very small, not much else I can get.

Taste is a thick hop feel missing the chew fruit components I associate with Flanders. Decent hop but faint bitter and not as prominent only in the swallow, very dry feeling finish as well. Not very complimenting, I don't think this works very well, it's kind of a mess. The beer really needs aeration to get some of the cherry fruit out of it, it's so hard to detect even when doing so.

I can drink this but I am not really that impressed by it. I'll probably never have it again.

Bottle from the COOP.. shared a while back with the Boise peeps.

Pours hazy amber with a yellowish head.. okay retention and splotchy lacing...

Nose is dry and fruity and metallic.. cheap balsamic soaked cherries and lesser apple cider vinegar notes... odd gastric acid elements.

flavor is a bit better... dry and dusty.. not as sweet as the aroma would make you believe.. "wood" with artificial cherry essence.. copper... bags of nickels.. fruity vinegar really only shows with warmth and when the above missteps dissolve away.

Pretty thick for a Flanders.. the carbonation seems about right... but clingy on the palate and not at all refreshing.

Not a good beer right now and overwhelmingly expensive... The bad thing is, I may buy another just so I forget about it for a few years.

On tap at The Bruery Provisions. Monstre Rouge is a murky, hazy amber-red; it pours with a finger of head that settles to a film. The aroma is a perplexing blend of sweaty funk, brash oak, dark fruit, metal and muddled hops. The palate is surprisingly bitter, astringent and metallic. Sweetness peaks through a bit, as do notes of dark fruit. It isn't sour so much as it's funky, and there's little of the acetic sourness that's characteristic of a Flemish red. It finishes with harsh American oak astringency. This is absolutely awful, I choked down about an ounce of my pour before I could finish no more.

Saw a bottle of this at The Foodery... oddly, I was a little more intrigued by seeing the Terrapin name on the bottle than anything else. That, and the idea of an "Imperial Flanders Red" had me interested.

A: Certainly pours a red or deep amber... sandy coloured head forms magnificently on top, with modest retention but a full on coat of lace left as a souvenir.

S: Hops stand out in the nose, which has me a little baffled. Woody, earthy, and pine scents along with a slightly tart fruit smell pretty much make up the nose of the beer. Some malts are present, along with just a hint of mustiness that is a little unusual.

T: A massive hop presence that masks pretty much all of the other aspects of being a Flanders Red. The 'sour cherry' flavour is on a back burner, and the general dryness and tart flavours are all but missing completely. Pine and other evergreen hoppy flavours pair with a rather full body to create an unusual combo. Some fruity sweetness adds in a additional element of confusion.

D: Unfortunately, this beer seems to be a bit all over the place, with some rather poor flavour pairings. It's an intriguing idea, and perhaps one that could be revisited with a different recipe. Both breweries put out some amazing beers, and such an experiment is respectable, but it's one I'd put in the "live and learn" pile.
