A 330ml bottle with a BB of Jan 2014, so it's a little out of date. Picked up from a beer shop in Bruges while visiting in May 2012. The label states that the beer was created for the Bruges Beer Institute and named after the Church of St. Basil on the Burg (the Church of the Holy Blood).
Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A dark coppery-amber hue with some floating sediment and good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of caramel/toffee, brown sugar, raisins, yeast esters, subtle spice, faint banana and a twinge of stewed leaves. A warming whiff of booze in the background. Rather nice.
Tastes of sweet, fruity malt with a yeasty finish. Notes of caramel/toffee, raisins, dried fruit, brown sugar, yeast esters, mild pepper, subtle spice, a hint of banana and stewed leaves. Quite sweet, with a touch of warming alcohol in the background. A mild yeastiness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and good body. Aftertaste of sugar, fruity malt and lingering yeast.
Not bad - sweet but certainly Belgian. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour have a sweet caramel and fruit character underpinned by hints of yeast esters and spice. Little in the way of hops to be discerned. Good body. Perhaps a tad too sweet, but otherwise goes down quite nicely. Not sure if this beer is supposed to represent Bruges in some way, however it's a decent tipple. Worth sampling if you stumble across it.

18th Oct 2012 on-tap in Daisey's ’t Brugs Beertje: good deep amber/brown body, tan coloured head that stayed a while.
Burnt sugar and honey in both the nose and taste: so a bit sweet then! Belgian style yeast esters and flavours calmed it down a bit but other sweet notes also came and went during my tasting: namely candid fruits, brown sugar and caramel.
The alcohol was well hidden by the sweet brew; it did have a mild hop bitterness under the surface and towards the end of each sip it was easy to find. A nice easy drinking beer for 7.0% ABV.
