portion of a 750ml bottle served in a Belgian snifter.

Pours the color of honey; hazy.

Aroma: spot on given the "Tropical Tripel": there's a substantial note of coconut, pineapple, citrus and other tropical fruits plus a Belgian tripel in the background. A subtle trace of oak.

Flavor: the base ale makes a stronger appearance in tasting where it is nicely balanced by the fruits and a hint of coconut. Appropriately sweet but eventually leaves a mildly bitter aftertaste.

On tap at Lucky Baldwins Trappiste in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, spice, yeast, grape juice, and fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with brown sugar, caramel, spice, and grape juice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice fruit presence, but I am not really getting any tropical qualities in the smell or taste.

Pour: Nice fluffy head atop a goldenrod body. Looks really nice.

Aroma: Not as much as expected in the aroma. Sweet fruit and Belgian yeast funk. There is a touch of coconut if I really search for it, but I really have to search for it.

Taste: Some typical tripel notes like sweet candy, and a bit of tartness, along with some funk. There is also a much more present coconut flavor than in the aroma, which comes out more as the beer warms. The peach is hiding in there somewhere, I’m sure, but I can’t really identify it. Some of the oak from aging comes through in the aftertaste.

Overall: Coconut really isn’t my thing, so that threw me off as I drank and the coconut came through more and more. However, the beer is well constructed, and seems very intentional, so if you like coconut, I suppose you should try to find this somewhere.

$15.99 for a 750ml corked and caged bottle @ BevCo. Belgian tripel aged on medium toasted oak chips with toasted coconut and peaches, collaboration brew between Cigar City and De Proef. Fermented with "a classic trappist yeast" and Brett Brux III, magnum and simcoe during the boil, along with lactose and Belgian candi sugar.
9.5% ABV.

Pours out to a hazy burnt orange, forming a tall peaking whipped light yellow head with superior retention and lacing due in part to it's brisk carbonation, ~3.0 carbs or so. The note has a strong Brett character, which gives way to rotting peaches and candied peaches. Mouthfeel is prickly with a light body. Finish is dry. The taste opens with lots of brett character, horse blanket, candied and rotting fruits, moderate firm bitterness, fruity citrusy hops, a touch of buttery oak in the finish, lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. I would have no idea that this was brewed with coconut. Tart and metallic mouthfeel in the aftertaste. Peppery alcohol is definitely felt. It's definitely rough. Tannic harshness.

The bitterness, overt hoppiness, tart acidity, metallic note, harsh alcohols and the brett don't really sit well together. More of a Belgian IPA. As a tripel, it fails. A curious experiment, but I definitely wouldn't buy this again.
