Hand-pull from an Angram beer engine into multiple 10oz nonics. Brief notes:

Clear dark auburn body with a smattering of foam up top - average retention, fine lacing.

Subtle complexity from specialty malt in the nose - a gradient of roast levels and sugars.

Toasty palate entry with hints of grassy/almost vegetal fresh cane juice (hints of white rhum) and a touch of char, leading into a drying finish. No hop flavors and very low bitterness.

Light creamy mouthfeel - low but lasting carbonation.

A very "clean" rendition of a traditional style - they avoid kettle caramelization by using specialty malt instead of a lengthy boil, which keeps the invert sugar flavors subdued/pure as well. It may end up losing some potential depth, compared to the best examples of the style, but remains a lovely session thanks to the brewer's choices.

Look - Pours a dark brown, with a deep garnet hue when held to light. Head is off-white with decent distribution ranging from small to medium. Head dissipates somewhat quickly, but a half centimeter cap is left behind. A bit of lacing.

Smell - Deep caramel notes with hints of coffee, toffee, raisins, cereal, a bit of peaty smoke and just a hint of dulce de leche.

Taste - Lots of the sweet caramel notes up front, a roasty smoke is present. Cereal, a bit of celery, dates, walnut, coffee earth and oak. Only the slightest touch of bitterness on the finish, with a nutty flavor lingering. Somewhat watery but that is to be expected for a 60 shilling at 4.3%

Feel - Thin but creamy, not bubbly at all. Very little tingle, mostly on tip of tongue.

Overall - A very nice and flavorful sessionable ale. Picked it up because my middle name is Macleod, and I'm glad that I did.

On cask at MacLeod Ale Brewing Company in Van Nuys, CA.

Pours a clear dark reddish-orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and metallic aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, earth, and caramel flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a slightly better taste over smell, but is quite solid all around.
