As Australia's biggest mass produced macro beer company, Carlton and United seem to produce a lot of average lagers. Carlton Black and Sheaf Stout however, appear to be the better of their brews.

Look: Poured out of a 750ml longneck into a Guinness Pint glass, It's very dark, almost Cola looking. Thick almost tan coloured head, of which there's about 2 fingers of. Looks pretty carbonated, Looks like a decent stout.

Smell: Roasted dark malts, bitter coffee, slight vegemite hue to it, toffee and caramel sweetness

Taste: Smooth, roasted malt, coffee. There's Pride of Ringwood hoppiness and bitterness, but you expect that from CUB. Slight coca taste but not overly prominent. Is a earthy metallic note at the back end of the sip, mingling with the roasted coffee and malt flavour.

Feel: Medium body, not as carbonated as initially expected, but enough for the burps to pop through almost immediately. Smooth, easy drinking

Overall: It's enjoyable. It's not the worlds greatest stout, but it's a good Aussie entry level stout with more flavour and body than your standard Carlton and United fare. It's good alternative.

24.4oz bottle (best by xx/Jun/21, couldn't quite make out the day date, but I think the 6th.) poured into 14oz teku.

TL;DR version? Nearly perfectly average.

Wordier? solid black, with 1/2 inch dark tan head.
Solid malt aromas, with notes of chocolate and vanilla.
Same flavors, but an added sharp bite on the finish that was not enjoyable.
Typical medium body with semi-sweet finish.
OK drinkability, always meant to tick this sooner.
Overall, not terrible, and if looking for an inexpensive mini-mart stout, here's your beer.

Dark brown and opaque. Half a finger of beige head.

Smells of coffee, liquorice, and cocoa.

The taste follows the nose, and is slightly sweet.

Medium body with little carbonation.

I got this in Blaine, Washington and am drinking it in Redding, August 27, 2019.

Poured from 25.4oz brown bottle into glass. On neck of bottle is stamped 'BEST BEFORE 120419 11568'.
Deep brown colored body, with medium brown back lit highlights. Quarter finger of creamy tan head upon pouring, fades away to partial cap and ring. Leaves behind webs of lacing.
Aroma of dark roasted malts, with a little dark fruit and chocolate.
Taste is dark roasted malts, with a medicinal peaty flavor coming through the last half. Higher up there are some hints of dark fruit with undetermined sweetness/tartness. There are hints of chocolate that bob in and out. The after taste is short and dry.
Mouth feel is medium plus, with some creaminess. Okay carbonation.
A dark beer that is pretty in the glass, with its expanse of web lacing. Remindful in a way to Guinness Stout but overall less flavorful. This is a good choice at the pub, and to pair with savory meats and cheeses.

Aroma is almost whiskey-like, then smoky, roasted, but still alcohol. Black - opaque, with bubbles visible just at the glass. Tall tan head, thick and creamy. The head recedes moderately, leaving bubbly lacing. Feel is thin to moderate. Initial taste is dark fruit and roasted malts, transitioning to a slightly astringent bitterness in the middle and finish. Aftertaste is dry and somewhat bitter. The middle and finish also has an odd earthiness that is hard to describe; not unpleasant, just unusual. Overall, seems to be a bit of a cross between an English Stout and a Dry Irish Stout. Good enough to buy again (but, I probably won't).

1 pt. , 9.4 oz. bottle:

Pours dark brown to light black. A creamy tan head lasts, leaving lacing.

The smell is of cocoa/coffee. Alcohol shows a bit more than expected for 5.7 abv.

The taste is of cocoa/coffee, some dark fruit and an earthy bitterness. Dry, bitter-ish finish.

Slight initial fizz soon settles. Hits medium bodied. Smooth.

A nice stout, though it is not "sweet" (or "milky"). Much closer to an English Stout (without the charcoal smokiness of some classics of the style). Dry version, but not quite an Irish Dry Stout either. Whatever the case may be, it is a bitter/dry interpretation of a stout. Unique.

Very reasonably priced at about $3.25 for the bottle.

Dark, almost black with a little lace. Taste is ok: burnt malt, balanced, kinda thin for appearance, a bit more dry than i would like, you can feel some alcohol taste- not too bad. Overall good beer for the price. Will buy it again for sure.
