A: Pours black and looks pretty thick. Very small head that quickly disapears into a thin skin on the top of the beer. A harder pour for the second glass produced a much better looking head. Thick, light brown and disapated very slowly.

S: Strong smell of alcohol and licorice with maybe a hint of chocolate. . Can't say I liked it all that much.

T: This is supposed to be a stout? There is a faint hint of roastiness first taste that quickly leaves before you can really enjoy it. Midtaste dosn't taste like a stout at all, doen't even taste like beer! Tastes more like a really cheap white wine. Best part of this is the aftertaste which has a slight coffee-like bitterness and some hints of chocolate. After awhile the vinous flavors start to die down and the stout flavors start to show a little more, though they are still very weak.

M: It looked like it would be thick but it's actually really, thin and watery and pretty carbonated.

D: It took awhile to get used to. I hated it at first but after it warmed a bit and I got used to it I didn't mind it. I didn't finish the bottle however and I definatly wouldn't get this again.

Best before date imprinted on bottle of 8Mar08.

Dispensed from a huge ass 1pt 11oz bottle into an imperial pint glass. A purely black beer emerges and is topped with a light a nd fizzy tan head. Nice retention given its thin nature.

Aroma is rubbing alcohol and slight chocolate notes. Smells like a deep red wine like a shiraz. The alcohol aroma almost burn the nose hair and pollute the nasal cavities and brain.

Flavor is alcoholic and again, vinous and red wine like. Nice chocolate flavor as well in the very end but it takes a while to get there and by then, I really am weary of the overall flavor. Tastes too much like a rubbing alcohol or paint thinner.

Very thin mouthfeel. This was not a good beer and I think I may pour the rest. I just cant take it. Really a poor example and certainly not a sweet or milk stout. The only way this could possibly be drinkable is at very cold temps.

A - Black. Yep, its a stout. 1.5 finger head a few hints of lacing.

S - Mmm Mmm good, Chocolate! Chocolate, and a little creamy sweetness smell similar to frosting.

T/m - Mehhh. Alarmingly meh. meh. I can taste a hint of the original "soul" of the beer, a slight hint of chocolate, but alas I am overwhelmed by a metallic taste, but its in a bottle, hissed when opened, cap looks intact and no hint of rust or spoilage. I am disappoint son.

0 - 0verall nothing to write home about, kinda average, but on flavor profile I would rate it a "run for the hills" seek to avoid! Maybe because its from a continent away and a sketch store?

PP (Price Point) - $4 for a 25.4 oz bottle is again, Meh, nothing great here, just because there is extra beer compared to a bomber, doesn't mean its good!! No go in my book.

Review from notes (3/18/11). Pours black with a smallish tan head. There’s some decent lacing. The aroma is coffee, chocolate and old pennies. The stout flavors are actually pretty ok in the aroma, but the metallic note hurts things significantly. I may as well be drinking out of the jar that I use for loose change. Cardboard, dehydrated milk, rusty iron, burnt bread and mineral hops all make a strong showing in the taste department. It starts with some weak sweetness and finishes with a rough combination of roast and bitterness. It’s just all wrong. There’s also a bizarre flavor that I associate with hospitals, like a medicinal disinfectant. Mouthfeel is thin and weak. I don't mean to be too harsh, but the metallic flavor is strong and bad. It really ruined the otherwise ok aroma. On the other hand, the taste had all sorts of problems. Unfortunate. I struggled my way through the bottle.

I was disappointed I didn't like this imported stout more than I did. It had a lot of promise - but from the very first wiff, I was kinda turned off. It just smelled so...alcoholic to me. Tasted so, too - normally with a nice stout it's hidden by all the other flavours, but in this case, not so much. I really enjoyed the aftertaste that lingered on my tongue, that was a great positive. Besides that, unfortunately, I didn't see much I enjoyed for me to return to for another go.

Definately a less assertive stout. Rather dull....and uninteresting.

Poured black with a less than adequate head and no lacing.

Aroma is faint. Some hop spicyness and some chocolate notes.

Dark roastiness, chocolate with a nice hop bite. Smooth going down but just a little too simple.

1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a conical Guinness pint glass in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Bottle acquired at BevMo in Palo Alto, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are average. I love stouts, but I've never had anything from this brewery. Best before date: February 1st, 2013.

Served refrigerator cold but allowed to warm as drinking continued. Not paired with food.

A: Pours a two finger head of nice tan colour, great cream, good thickness, and good retention for the style. Colour is a solid black. Appears direly overcarbonated; bubbles are rampant.

Sm: Milk, chocolate, toffee, cream, nuts, and maybe some roast. A mild strength aroma.

T: Milky and off-cream notes alongside light chocolate, some caramelized malt, and light nuts on the finish. The chocolate grows slightly richer in the third act, but it's largely insignificant. No alcohol comes through. It's balanced decently, but in need of work. Built blandly, without layering or subtlety. It's not one-note, but it's certainly a simple beer. I don't dislike it.

Mf: Smooth and wet, with a bit too much thickness but not enough cream. Should be far more dry and a bit more coarse. The cream is limited to the open and finish; I'd like to have it through the body as well.

Dr/Ov: Drinkable, but less so than other beers in its style on account of the problematic thickness. Wouldn't session well. Overall, it's a bland simple stout that won't tickle anyone's fancy, but that doesn't mean it's a bad beer. It's merely a bit below average.

Pours brown/black, lots and lots of foam (way too much) and takes forever to die down. Kind of irritating really.

Aroma is wheat-like, a bit earthy, roasted, but interestingly enough...skunked.

Flavor was similar to the aroma, imagine a light stout with wheat and skunk mixed in. Not real pleasant but surprisingly not horrible either.

Body was medium but the over carbonation was distracting and brought out the worst aspects of the beer. Wouldn't drink this again.

It was like sucking on a dirty penny!
That was my experience with Sheaf Stout.

It looked good, smelled good, poured well and felt great...reminiscent of a thick Guinness. However, the taste straight out of the bottle was like a rusty copper penny had a bastard love child with the bottle cap. Awful all around.

I let it sit for a bit. After about 20 minutes of contemplating whether I should finish the bottle or not, I gave it another try. Sure enough, like a young wine it tasted better after it had a moment to breath. Still had a metallic twinge to it though.

Perhaps for someone with a bent for the curious this may be pleasant. However, for a former Coug and everyday normal guy: not so tasty.

I won't be trying this very inexpensive import again.

Pours an opaque black petroloid appearance, in fact a delicious ochre head is the only reason I know I don't have a glass of petrol in my hand. Leaves thick but pocky lacing on the glass. Very decent-looking stout.

Gritty coffee nose with a slight cocoa-powder character on it. Slightly sour aspect on the back, this has an over-roasted coffee smell, a bit sweeter than that, but not great. Pretty simple dark beer smell.

It's a bit too cold at the moment, but yeah, slightly sour toasty notes, a lot of dark malt on that. Gritty and sour with a very slight cocoa touch but not much and not impressive. Beer, I can get this shit at my local Starbucks. Oh wait, I don't have a local Starbucks any more. But yeah, just because you're alcoholic doesn't give you the right to be gritty and unpleasant. This beer stands for everything I actually dislike about darks and doesn't have enough character to save it. Mouthfeel is very thin.

I can see what they're trying to do, but this beer just reminds me why I typically say in my reviews that I don't like dark beers. Frankly I'd happily pay for an airfare to Oregon to grab some Rogue Imperial Stout rather than drink this.

Big ass bottle with a twist off cap for $3.99.

A-Pours charcoal black with with 1/2 inch of creamy milk chocolate colored head.Leaves scattered foamy lacing.

S-Light roasty malts, bitter chocolate. Can't smell much else.

T/M-Medium bodied and smooth, with a light roastiness. Coffee bitterness, condensed milk sweetness. There's a prominent off flavor reminiscent of wet cardboard, and the fizzy carbonation distracts from the range of flavors, rather than supporting them.

D-Doesn't do much for me. The body is too thin and fizzy, and the flavor profile is all over the place.

I have never seen this beer in SoCal, and no, this wasn't found in SoCal, but rather Santa Cruz. 750 ml twist-off bottle, on to the beer:

Poured into a weizen glass, the beer is a lighter black, not total darkness. Ruby brown hues at the edges. There still remains a little bit of tanned white head on top. (On the second pour, the head is gone and only dots of tan bubbles spot the top. The aroma....well first, you get a big whiff of molasses. But underneath that, there's a squirt of chocolate syrup, which is pleasant. Almost like a chocolate stout.

Decent taste. If the taste was like the smell, I would be happier. A little molasses first, burnt flavors are obvoius. Banana emerges here and there. There's a little vague sweetness, but it's nowhere to the sweetness you'd get in a Young's Double Chocolate Stout or Mackeson XXX. It feels light, and seems a little overcarbonated. Not luscious or creamy the way other sweet stouts have pampered me. The aftertaste is roasted, but with less than pleasant astrignency.

When I bought this beer, I was physched to try a beer I've never seen or had. When I discovered it was made by Carlton & United, the same folks who do such masterpieces (*sarcasm) as Carlton Draught and Victoria Bitter, I shivered. Sheaf Stout is decent, and it probably is what I could have expected from these guys, and it's not a life changer in your beer pursuit. But hey, it only cost $2.99.

Brown pour. Looks lighter in color than most stouts, even milk stouts. Thin beige head on it. Average lacing.

Aroma was mild. Reach for it and you can smell caramel, chocolate roasted malt.

Substantial roasted malt in the flavor. A milk stout? Didn't taste like it. Isn't it supposed to have a small lactose character and not a harsh bitterness? Too much bittering hops and burnt malt not in proportion to the rest of the malt bill. Cocao like flavor, dry, mild chocolate implications, but it seems like they really burned the hell out of the chocolate malt here. Bitter, metallic, thin. Needs some heft. No aspect is terrible tasting, but it is average at best. Too much carbonation. Too much of everything that should not be in a milk stout.

This one seems to be getting harder and harder to find, had my first one back in the 90s I believe. College.

Pours dark black with a off white caramel colored head that doesn't last long on top.
Has a syrupy, alcoholic nose.
marshmallows, cream and oak chips are present on my palate after the first sip. I has a dry finish that leaves me wanting another beer.

Came in a 27oz bottle. The beer was shared between three of us, so I guess I had a little over half a pint.

Poured with a good looking head that dissipated more rapidly than I would have expected. The beer itself was dark and bizarrely enough smelled of raspberries, wheat and pickled onions!

This didn't taste like any beer I am familiar with. It tasted more like piquant white wine infused with too much fake smoke flavouring, which is actually a better combination than it sounds. The taste suggested more hops and alcohol and less malt than I would expect from a stout. The Sheaf did not have the silky smooth feel that I associate with stouts either.

I have yet to discover a good Australian beer, and I certainly wouldn't call this one good, but it is the most interesting Aussie brew I have sampled thus far.

First thing is first, this beer is what it is, for 2 bucks for a 27oz. bottle you don't expect much. However there was some suprises here, the beer pours a nice black with tan head that is impressive at the first pour but settles to bubbles a sip into the session. The smell is very metallic with slight hints of cocoa powder, the taste has a nice smooth malt and roasted barley forefront then an odd metallic rustiness. Lighter than most stouts but not bad, I would drink again if this was the only stout around.

We've all had Bailey's Irish Creme at some Christmas get together when we were 12 years old and thought it was just some sousy milk with magic currents. The best part is the minty silky creamy eggnog flavor, the worst: the high octane fuel vapor which encompasses half the taste. Such is the predicament of our Aussie comrade. It smells of stout and looks the part but tastes like a spirited kerosene. Not undrinkable but hardly a guzzler m'ate, even though it warms better than it drinks chilled. I recommend letting it sit opened overnight at room tempertaure. I also recommend an American stout over this rather reasonably priced $3.49 pint and 11 ounce mini 40OZ.

Got the bottle in front of me and am looking at it in the glass.

Poured dark brown with a medium head. Appearance is pretty ordinary, but then what can you do to improve brown. Good head, I guess which this one does not have.

Nose is roasted malts wth asome chocolate. Again nothing to catch your attention.

It is a little light in mouthfeel, and bit too carbonated to be a great stout.

So overall; this is simply nothing remarkable, and as stouts go seems no better than average in all respects.

Bottle from 99 Bottles in Santa Cruz. Dark but not opaque brown with a tan head. Aromas of cocoa powder and roasty malt. Flavor is of bittersweet chocolate coffee with a rather harsh roasted finish. Carbonation is very high and makes the mouthfeel subpar. Very average.

First beer review, yay!

Poured from the classic Australian 375ml stubbie bottle (a real man's bottle - none of this 330ml guff!), into a 500ml "mini" Stein glass.

A: Jet black, much like a black hole - light cannot escape it's grasp. Tan head which dissipates leaving a ring of beige around the inside of the glass. Not appealing but nonetheless acceptable for a Stout.

S: Burnt coffee (lot's of it!), dark chocolate and used Castrol GTX engine oil. Hint of metal thrown in because of the limited fermentation in "stainless" steel vats - but this is quite expected from CUB (Carlton United - the largest brewery in Victoria).

T: Smell delivers almost exactly in the taste - burnt coffee, dark chocolate, engine oil and a hint of metal. Also a very present alcohol note - which given the ABV is only 5.7% this should not be as pronounced.

M: Hey I happen to like beers that aren't overly carbonated - call it a personal preference due to a hiccup reflex I suffer from when drinking anything carbonated (soft drinks, etc...), but this stout is definitely in the zone of carbonation I like (which is surprising from CUB - who like to over carbonate all their beers). It's a bit on the watery side nonetheless.

D: It reminds me of an ale I had on tap at a bar I worked in Scotland many years ago: this ale was appropriately named "Old Engine Oil" and we could only sell half-pints of this stuff because of the 9% ABV - but Sheaf doesn't have nearly as much ABV so as far as drink-ability goes it's a bit easier to keep on top of (375ml = 1.7 standard drinks).

Food match: Venison, game meats and other rich steaks (or fried mushrooms for my fellow vegetarian brethren).

Dark coffee color, nice brown head at about an inch. A little spicy aroma, along with malt smells. Flavor is mild, a little smoky with touches of chocolate tones. Candy flavors, gravelly with an estery bubblegum impression. Sweetness is lacking but roastiness is lacking too. There's something missing mid-mouth, most of the action is at the finish. Almost like a spicy Porter with a dark color. Mouthfeel is somewhat lacking as well. Not really a fovorite of mine.

Pours a very dark chocolate brown. The very active carbonation lends itself to rocky dark brown head. Aroma? Burnt cocoa, slight hops aroma. First sip was sweet, with hint of chocolate candy. Finish however is bitter and astringent. Mouthfeel is thin and the carbonation stays through to the end. Drinkability is good-nothing to go out of your way for.

Poured from a 1-pint, 9.4oz standard pressure-cap bottle into a pint glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Best by - July 13, 2014. Reviewed live.

A- Half-finger mocha head with decent retention. Pitch-black colored body. No light even peeks around the edges. Little bit of a clinging lacing around the edge.

S- Fruity, chocolate malts and sweet creaminess. More dark fruits than I was expecting. Modest, but appealing aroma.

T- Bittersweet. Has dark fruits, little roast flavor and chocolate but also some of that cream, milkiness. Not bad, surprisingly dark, very roasty.

M- Thick, heavy carbonation and a syrupy feel at the end. Semi-dry.

O- This beer is hovering around average. Not bad, but surprising it made Australia's top-50 beers.

Clear dark brown colored beer with a skimpy tan head.

Smell is sweetish and deeply roasted. Chocolate and coffee aromas are about in equilibrium in this beer. There are no hop aromas in the scent as far as I can sniff.

Taste is just a bit sweet and quite smoky at the beginning. This tastes like it has a large amount of salt in it. Deeper flavor complexities are present but mostly this is Starbucks over roasted coffee in flavor. Vanilla and a bit of caramel are the main part of the complexity. There is unfortunately a trace of oxidation present in this beer; wonder how long BevMo has had it? At best I can only give this an average rating on taste.

Mouthfeel is OK.

I can only rate this as average in drinkability. The main problem with this beer is that it gives me the impression that there is a large dose of seawater added to it and not the little bit in some Scottish beers either. A beer that all beer geeks must try once but not that great IMHO.

a: pours a dark black color with dark ruby hues with an inch of head that dissapears very slowly leaving a good amount of sticky lace
s: roasted malts with chocolate alcohol aroma is present very surprising considering low alcohol level
t: roasted malts chocolate, very coffee like with good amount of bitterness finishes watery with some metallic flavor
m: medium to full bodied with average amount of carbonation

overall this is not a brew that i am going to buy again
