Costa Mesa's chapter of the trendy Umami Burger takes the place of the former Valhalla Table, so finding it was not difficult. It a small space, but with a modest sized bar. Japanese inspired artwork displayed at a few points stick to the theme of the Japanese word used in name of this burger joint. I didn't see an unoccupied table during my visit, so I was lucky a locate a seat at the bar.
Eight different beers pouring from tap, and a more than modest variety at that. Beers from Stone, Saint Archer, Ommegang, Great Divide, Allagash, and Oskar Blues had their names on tap handles. Roughly 10 bottled beers available as well, with Ballast Point, Victory and another Ommegang among the highlights. I knew from the Anaheim chapter that Umami Burger uses cheater pints for their pours. I learned that for certain beers (like my Yeti Imperial Stout), you get a sizable tulip (perhaps 12 ounces worth), which for aesthetics earns quality points.
Quick service and a pour of water which I hadn't asked for boosts the score for service. At the food end, the Manly Burger and side of onion rings took my palate into bliss. If you're looking for great burgers and a good beer to compliment, Umami Burger is an easy choice to make. That said, have a few extra bucks in your pocket when the moment calls.
