This is my second from San Mig brought back from the Philippines.

A Clean Gold that fizzes with high carbo forming to a bubbly white head, the head dissipates too fast leaving a thin film at the top of the beer. The usual scents of a cheap macro fill the glass only with a slight hint of hops. Even though there is a hint of hops in the aroma there were none present in the taste. Flat, dull, bitter and sharp best describe the flavor, there is a weird aftertaste. The flow of this brew is mediocre at best it goes in smooth but watery to a thin frizz with all the carbos frying your tongue, after washing down your throat for a few seconds it leaves a filmy feel in you mouth then back to the awkward aftertaste.

Overall this is not a good beer, now I haven't had many ice beers before (the only two i can remember are Natty Ice and Molson Ice) but this seems like a cheap translation.

Presentation: 330ml ‘All-Aluminum’ Can. Metallic Blue Can which has a silver band and white text, reminds me of a snazzy freshmint toothpaste packet. Listed at “High Alcohol (6.3% alc./vol.)” and as “San Mig Strong Ice”. Described as an “Ice Filtered Pale Pilsen” on the front, with further explanation on the side that expands “It’s time you experience San Mig Strong Ice! A high-alcohol, ice-filtered brew that hits your senses in a way that no other beer will. Be ready for a different kind of chill!”. The letters “HKDNP” are stamped into the lid either side of the ring-pull whilst the base has a freshness date of 04JUL07.

Appearance: Yellow golden body with a thin broken covered head. Cheap Lager looks with a healthy dollop of streamers to keep the thin scattered head barely alive.

Nose: False smelling floral hops and a sweet malt mélange, an artificial forced affair that is sickly.

Taste: The tastes follow the artificial aromas, sweet malts with a clean middle but a fuzzy perfumed finish. Horrid palate fouling metallic trait rises after the first swallow and remains polluting the tongue until the next mouthful washes it away, until the swallow again, whence it returns.

Mouthfeel: Pale feel. Slender body with a skinny profile that has a flavored water texture. Hints of metallic sweetness fill the torso to add some semblance of “feel”, but it’s more that of a desperate Macro Lager wannabe.

Drinkability: I don’t see how this is 6.3%, even if it is, it suffers too much from a thin feel and too many artificial flavors. Palatable for scientific reasons only.

Overall: I am really not that sure what to make of this, except for the fact that “Artificial Flavor” appears on the label under the other ingredients alongside Malt, Cereals/Sugar and Hops - the other San Miguel offerings omitted this adjunct. Yet another of the handful of “oddball” San Miguel brews that were dragged back from the Philippines by a colleague that knows that I like to try new brews. I note that unlike the other brews I have, this one is not listed on BA, yet, maybe it is a new offering. It tries far too hard to be something much more that it actually is.
