Can. A little pricey at about $5 a pop but figured I would give it a try. Popped the top and poured into a NB tulip glass a dark non transparent brown/black color with a 1 finger mocha tan head that slowly settles. The arom is sublte but has notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Medium mouthfeel. Medium roast coffee flavors that slowly transition to a smooth dark chocolate note endign with a slight bitterness. Some sweetness but still dry. Minimal lacing. Overall, a nice drinking porter but a little too pricey for me to go for again.

This has the steepest cost to ratings that I have found outside of sours. The mouthfeel is quite metallic pricky texture, more in line with a textbook porter.

Ive never had a japanese beer that I like but this one isn't bad. Smells like coffee with a little chocolate. The taste is coffee, straight up with a slight aftertaste of mocha-like chocolate. Its kind of a watery beer though, goes down like a light beer so that's a little disappointing. Overall maybe a B- beer but as far as japanese beers go its an A.

Black with a medium dark khaki head that fades but is nice on the pour.

Nose is full of plumed coffee/plumed chocolate. Hints of vanilla and a hint of coconut and carmel.

Mouthfeel is medium thin but nice carbonation and decent balance.

Flavor profile is simple but nice roasted coffee and hints of chocolate malt and cocoa. Tastes a bit like a chocolate/mocha malt flavor.

Finish is cocoa/bitter chocolate and bitter roasted coffee. Finish is long lasting.

American porter
5% ABV

APPEARANCE: Poured out a deep motor oil black. Even up to the light you can not see through this. Small tan head that settle into a small halo.

AROMA: Very intense and in your face coffee aroma. Chocolate and molasses in the mix with a almost metallic cooked blood smell of iron hiding in the shadows.

TASTE: Chocolate right up front with the coffee. It literally reminds me of a mocha latte. Some bitterness in the middle, sweet malts some faint hops. Finishes smokey and toasty.

MOUTHFEEL: Very light body for a porter. I'm assuming that mixed with the low ABV was the intention of an everyday drinking porter. Minimal carbonation. Slight creaminess in the beginning but thins out on the swallow.

OVERALL: Very interesting and complex beer. Easy to drink, I will say this is the best Japanese porter I have had.

RATING: 3.5/5 Zombie Heads!

Thanks to MrVonzipper for the can share

Look: Almost black and totally opaque with 1/4 head and no retention

Smell: Dark fruits coffee and some chocolate

Taste: Little bit of chocolate and coffee upfront with a bit of ash on the backend

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with low to medium carbonation

Overall: It is a decent little beer

Pours a very dark kola hue which leaves a creamy mocha laced two finger head that stays and leaves heaps of clingy lacing, the smell is dark roasted malts, cooking chocolate, dark chocolate, tobacco and dark coffee, the mouthfeel is just over light bodied and well carbonated with tastes of dark roasted chocolate malts, bitter black coffee, earthy hops, dark chocolate and finished with a cappicino bittersweetness and overall its alright and easy enough to drink but nothing outstanding cheers.

look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

A smoky sweet, molasses-like malt aroma is readily apparent. Pours a moderate, dense, tan-colored head which soon diminishes and forms a lasting ring; lots of lacing. Body is black—no discernible highlights. The roasted malt flavor comes through clearly in the first few sips, along with an unwelcome metallic quality; light coffee; both hop bitterness and flavor are subdued. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of the flavor is the lingering, nutty roastiness. Medium-light body with moderately low carbonation and a satisfying bite.

While not bad overall, the metallic quality is a little distracting and the flavor begins to taste of carbonated water over time. Very drinkable otherwise, though it could benefit from a more complex and expressive flavor profile.

A porter from Japan, in a can? Yeah, I had to try this.

A: Pours a murky dark brown, nearly black with a short khaki head that fades quickly, not much lace on the sides of a standard pint glass.

S: Coffee up front with roasted malts, some chocolate and maybe a touch of smoke. Nothing mind blowing in the nose.

T: Similar to the nose but the flavors are a touch more pronounced than they were in the aroma. I get nice doses of chocolate, and some coffee, but it is subtle. Very light hop bitterness comes through as well.

M: Light to medium bodied with low carbonation. Not a traditional American porter in that the feel is pretty light, but it goes down smooth and is enjoyable.

O: Not the best porter I've had but definitely well done and something I'd drink again.

Poured into a stone nonic.

A: Black with a 1 finger creamy, khaki colored head and carbonation bubbling throughout the body.

S: Big vanilla overhang with coffee, an irony dried blood tinge, wood, caramel, non-lactose centric milk note, and honey roasted nuts. Odd and complex, but makes me very interested to drink it.

T: As though they mixed the nose with club soda, all of the nose but coming through much lighter with a generic roasted wood taste dominating. There's more vanilla in the finish, but not quite enough flavor overall. Kind of a big let down.

M: Smooth and creamy at first but goes into a club soda mouthfeel quickly with a little old graham cracker residue feel in the mouth after swallowing.

O: I'm always interested to give things from Japan a shot as I think there's a lot of potential there, but this one fell short in the taste in mouthfeel. I can't account for quality considering the distance this beer must have traveled, but as it is in my glass it still has distance to go.

Found this randomly at the grocery store the other day. Poured into 10oz glass. Poured black, just a touch of translucence at the edges. An inadvertent over-aggressive pour gave me over 3 inches of rocky, medium brown head that had very good retention and zero lacing.

The aroma was richly malty with some roast tones. The flavors were almost all roasted malt, just a hint of hop spice, with a coffeeish finish.

The body was surprisingly thin, way too thin for the style. Drinkability was good, the beer went down smoothly and easily. Overall, a decent beer. Worth trying if you see it.

Can

Thanks for sharing, MrVonzipper!

Nearly black with a thin brown head. Spots of lacing left down the glass.

Somewhat simple aroma--mild roasted malts and some mild coffee.

Simple, flavors: roasted malt, mild coffee, a hint of bitter chocolate, and some unfortunate ash/char flavor, though it isn't particularly distracting.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation.

A decent enough Asian/American porter, but there are too good of beers to try to revisit this one anytime soon.

Poured from the can into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours an opaque dark brown color with a thick layer of creamy tan head that fades to a ring around the glass.

Smell: Sweet with a lot of roasted grain. There is a mild caramel malt smell along with some dark chocolate and a touch of dark fruit.

Taste: This one was a pleasant surprise. Tons of roasted malt makes this beer stay more on the bitter side of the spectrum. There is some sweetness, but the roasty flavors win the fight. The finish is bitter from the roast.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I was pretty happy with this beer, but a little more sweetness in the flavor would have put it over the top.

Pours coffee black, maybe a shade lighter. Head is soapy, beige and pretty big but fades quickly. The aroma is mostly cocoa with touches of mocha, roast and a mild twang of acidity. Taste is sweet with more simple chocolate flavor and finishes with a fairly assertive coffee/roast bitterness. The coffee flavor is a bit stale. The acidity comes through a bit in the taste, as well. Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy, but it could use more body. It’s a decent porter but nothing special and certainly not worth the price, at least here in the US.

Thanks for the tick, Bobby.

A: The pour is not quite black with a big, soapy, mocha head.

S: Big time roasted malt aroma with coffee and coffee grounds being quite noticeable, too. Slightly acidic on the nose with some bitter dark chocolate coming through.

T: More chocolate than I was anticipating with quite a bit of bitterness. Definitely a solid roasted malt character along with coffee. Again, there's a definite acidity to the beer.

M: Medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: Not sure why this is getting such high marks on here. I thought this beer was pretty mediocre (at best).

Thanks to Eric for this can. Served in a tulip.

Pours black with a huge tan head and quite a bit of nice, streaky lacing as it falls down the glass. Eventually this settles into a thin cap that looks nice around the edges of the beer. The nose is pretty plain and is disappointing after viewing this thing. There is some mild roast there and maybe an undercurrent of chocolate, though that might be stretching it a bit. The flavor involves some mild roast and a touch of dark chocolate. The body is medium and it has an off-putting dry, roasty finish. An okay beer, but not something I would seek out again. Thanks again for the gift, Eric.

Tokyo Black pours thin and is jet black. The head is mocha brown and remains for about 30 seconds. Moderate lacing lines the glass.

The smell is mostly of bitter coffee and dark chocolate. The smell, like the beer itself, is a bit thin.

The taste is only a little bitter with coffee and chocolate notes. A slightly metallic aftertaste lingers.

The mouthfeel is thin but smooth and soft. Perhaps a little more prickly carbonation than a porter should have.

Overall, this beer is ok but not great. Yona Yona Pale is a better offering fro Yo Ho.

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Classic dark walnut brown body, with a hint of red. Quite dark and opaque. Head makes three fingers but settles slowly to a simple 3mm collar and tan like puck. Kind of a cocoa brown colored head. Pretty solid.

Nose is odd. Quite sweet and sugary smelling. Lots of sugars, and not sensing brown sugar either more of a powdered sugar. Malt and roast character is slight but quite overpowered by this sugar sensation. Forgive the irony but it smells like sweetened iced tea.

Palate comes with a borderline very thin and wet body. Light roast character in the mid palate but quite subdued until the swallow which allows it to permeate a bit more. A bit of a cola like mouthfeel and faint hint of fizz to match going with it. Leafy green hop action without the bitterness that seems to come with some of the sweetness and produce a strange herbality for a porter.

It's drinkable and passable, but it's a very odd tasting porter. Very unlike any porter I've had before.

I've had this one several times and I occasionally get one or two when I'm stocking up on its brother Indo no Aooni.

The color is black. The head is a light brown and stays around with minimal lacing in a lazy sort of way.

Roasted malts giving some nutty, chocolate aromas.

Hops and that strong toast action. I like the tangy feel to this one and it goes down easy at 5% ABV. I could have another. It's definitely a good enough brew, well carbonated and definitely good to session. I'll buy it again and recommend it too.

A - Black, two finger head that quickly dissipates. Black, oh yeah, its black too! Almond colored head that is a pleasant color to see.

S - NADA. ZIP. NOTHING. Small hint of dark roast and that is a far stretch.

T/M - SMOKE! Mild carbonation, a very minor finish of chocolate.

O - 5% ABV - kind of a tame porter in my opinion, Meh... middle of the spectrum, don't seek it out, but if its there give it a shot over something else you may have had.

PP (Price Point) - $4.99 for a 12oz can, again, Meh. Would be more appropriate at $3.50 or so for a can.

I poured this average beer into my tumbler at 45 degrees. The beer was black nd poured a decent head with good lacing. The beer had a milk chocolate taste and a hint of smokiness . The beer was just not that great and did not jump out with yummyness so I am going to have to say no to it specially for its crazy high price of over five dollars a can.

Pours black with a lasting, light tan head.
Sweet-smelling, some soy sauce shows along with roasted malt. Little else. Very faint.
Better flavours, with some spicy hops, roasted malt and liquorice. Again, quite sweet.
Carbonation is too high.
Not great.

A - dark as night with a tall creamy off-white head.

S - mild malts, chocolate and dried fruit. If it was stronger it would be nice, as is it is a bit boring.

T - malt, touch of smoke, meaty. However, very mild.

M - thin but a lot of tingle all over the tongue.

O - quite drinkable but mild enough to opt for something else.

I think it is awesome this is listed as an American Porter.

A: Well, it's dark with about 3/4 thumb of tan head. There is no lacing.

S: It smells of roasted coffee and I pick up a little alcohol. In fact, it smells a lot like coffee.

T: It has a coffee taste. The flavor is pretty underwhelming...I guess I expected it to have more flavor. It's very mellow on any flavors and has no bitterness at all. It just tastes like watered down coffee. It's not infected or anything so I wouldn't say it's awful, but I'm definitely not impressed.

M: The mouthfeel is bland. It's a wet beer, without much malty character. Not much carbonation...feels like cold water. Blah.

O: I wouldn't drink this again. I guess I thought this would be better for some reason. Is it possible for a beer to leave you depressed?
