I paid $4.00 for this can wich is alot, but I wanted to try something from a brewery I had not had before.Poured a burnt orange infused medium golden with a 1/2 finger white head that was gone pretty quickly.Alot of citrusy hops in the nose, not bitter just very juicy and fruity,a light biscuit malt note lingers.A decent shot of those citrusy hops hit at the onset on the palate but they come to an ubrupt end,the biscuit malt is more pronounced than in the aromas. It's ok but the flavors don't meld together good enough,oh well glad I tried it.

Fresh can of Ao Oni, (the blue ogre). I enjoyed it the last time I had it, but I was out walking on a hot summer's night and was very thirsty, so I'll give it a fair review now that I can sit down and think about it.

Appearance: Low-moderate head retention, some scattered lacing, deep amber colour, nothing too impressive but it looks the part. Carbonation is minimal.

Smell: Doesn't give too much away, although it's fairly cold. No aggressive hoppiness or any individual characters noticeable.

Taste: Bitter on the palate, but not excessively so. Refreshing, astringent and forward, but not agressive. Hops are not fruity or anything - although this is supposed to be an IPA, there's not a lot of complexity. It has the thirst-quenching qualities of a good pilsener in summer, but when you contemplate the brew there's actually not a lot there. However, it's pleasant to drink even though the only flavour there is bitter hop acids on the palate. This is a hop-strong beer without much maltiness and with emphasis on drinkability and quenching thirst.

Mouthfeel: Dull on the tongue but astringent and slightly puckering on the palate.

Drinkability: This beer's strong point. Thirst-quenching and easily poured down the throat, with the palate numbness being virtually the only memorable vestige of the brew!

Overall: It's a humid September evening and I'm enjoying this beverage but it's not the hop onslaught I remember it to be - maybe because the first time I had it I took its appellation of "India Pale Ale" with a grain of salt. It's definitely an American-style IPA - not a lot of maltiness or sweet flavours of any kind. Still, it's better than virtually all other Japanese beers, at least the ones I've been able to get a hold of. Fair play to this brewery that's trying to diversify its creations in the harshly anti-microbrew market of Japan.

350 mL aluminum can poured into pint glass, creating a tall thick foam which clings to the class. Beer is a very pale orange and just slightly hazy. Faint sweet/skunky aroma that doesn't particularly suggest IPA.

Flavor however brings bitterness up front and fills my mouth with a particular hop flavor. The body is just big enough to support the hop load with no detectable sweetness, although the carbonation is a little bit sharp. There's some other flaw here...it's maybe a little bit soapy?

Overall I'm enjoying this more than the Yona Yona Ale but not as much as the Tokyo Black. That said, there are a million better American IPAs out there which are easier to find at a fraction the price.

Clear medium orange amber with a thick, full and rich white head that fades quickly but retaines a nice short layer of white.

Nose is fresh pineapple you want and expect in an IPA and this doesn't disappoint in this regard.

Mouthfeel is difficult to judge because the flavors are so off. Mouthfeel is medium bodied but out of balance.

Flavors are just a bit of a mess. Tastes like watery burnt toast; sour/bitter pine that lacks brightness or character. All in all not something you really want to drink. Flavors are just a dull, bitter almost skunky in character. Not appealing.

Green herbal bitter unpleasant finish.

Pours amber with a small, fading head.
Nose shows sweet caramel and soft pine. Somewhat faint.
Restrained flavours, with a bit of grapefruit hops and some sweet bready malt followed by an assertive bitterness.
Could use more carbonation.
Not overly complex but enjoyable nonetheless.

Poured from the can at the bar myself at Sushi Taro DC into a Pokal glass. WAIT INTERCEPTION this glass is FROSTED! Quick grab and we sit and wait, to let this warm up a bit before pouring. Not sure on dating, bottom of can says 12-16-16 11-07 not sure what that's all about.

A nice opaque and cloudy amber orange with lemon hues, looks unfiltered, presenting an off white head and lots of retention. Head clumps a bit too and there's some good lacing also.

Nose is mostly malt, but a faint light hop, feels tea herbal more like an English IPA.

Taste is interesting. Kind of neutral bitter, but also a bit unbalanced. Do able for drinking with a quenching mouthfeel. There's a hint of alcohol heat on this, and a finish of light hop and just a faint touch of honey.

Overall it was kind of odd, but drinkable. It was certainly better with the maguro and wasabi than just drinking it alone.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours medium golden amber with a fine half finger white head with great retention and lacing; nice active carbonation. Great aroma of melon and tropical fruit, caramel and bready malt and light citrus hops. Flavor is very malty with caramel and bready malt, citrus, lightly piney hops and a nice amount of stone and tropical fruit. Medium bodied with a pleasant creaminess. A nice take on the malty style of IPA with good hop support and juicy flavors in the background. It could be a bit attenuated in hops because it may be an older can, but the hops still hold their own. A nice malty IPA.

A. Tons of sediment floating in there. A big foamy tan head and lots of lacing. Thick caramel color. Opaque.

S. No scent.

T. It has a metallic flavor. Perhaps from the can. There's a slight hoppy bite. A bit of a dark fruit undertone. Some citrus.

M. A bit of a sour taste.

O. A very plain taste. There's not much there for an IPA. Not offensive, but lacks any pop.

Appearance: It pours a cloudy, golden body with a one finger head. There is a good amount of retention; it certainly looks promising.

Smell: The hops smell sour and sweat malts can be detected. There are no aggressive aromas and nothing new stands out even as the beer warms.

Taste: Hop bitterness and a pinch of pine are noticed right away. There is no fruity flavor at all. The aftertaste taste like bread. It is not nearly as complex as many top level IPAs but there is just enough hop bitterness to qualify it for the genre.

Mouth feel: It is medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Like everything else about this beer, it is average.

Overall: Aooni (blue demon) certainly is not a bad beer. Unfortunately, there is nothing that really stands out about it either. I will give the brewer credit, as the IPA seems to be a tough genre in Japan. With a little more complexity, this could be a good representative for the style.

A: The beer is hazy yellowish orange in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation with lots of particles floating in suspension. It poured with a finger high dense off white head that died down, leaving a thin film of bubbles covering the surface and lacing running down the sides of the glass.
S: There are citrusy aromas in the nose along with notes of floral hops and hints of caramel and cracker malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is quite citrusy from the hops but only has a slight amount of bitterness due to the underlying malts, which contribute notes of caramel and hints of sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly chewy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very well balanced because it contains lots of hoppy flavors but isn’t that bitter. It is an easy drinking IPA.

Hazed, honey blonde with a fluffy cream colored head. Yo-Ho brewing didn't make the prettiest beer and the aroma is nothing to write home about either, faint toasted grain and floral hops and not much else. The flavor is not great but not bad either it's well balanced between sweet caramel malt and resinous citrusy hop bitterness. Medium bodied and refreshing. Aooni IPA is certainly one of the better Japanese beers available in the U.S. but with so many better domestic options available I wouldn't go out of my way to find it again.
