one of my fav IPAs, this is sold across all the country, mostly in lawson and familymart(but not in every store, in fact, in some areas it's quite hard to find), about 250~280JPY per 0.33 can. very huge bit of taste resembles orange/grapefruit, with a long-lasting aftertaste. IMO, this should have more score, but whatever, if you're coming to japan, try getting this one instead of other pop-stuff.

I am surprised this is a fairly decent IPA from Japan, where Happoshu dominated that market.

Poured into tulip. Pale amber. One finger head. Nice lacing.
Smells was hints of citrus and caramel.
Taste is much followed the smell, somewhat too bitter, still pretty drinkable IMO.
Light to medium bodied.
Overall I think this is a classic IPA that does not have any off characters, it is not so outstanding, either.

Poured from a can into a glass near Haiki.
Half finger of head tops an auburn clear beer.
It smells amazing. Loads of piney hops. Lemon accents.
What are these lukewarm reviews? This is a good beer and, for Japan, a godsend. Akin to Brew Free or Die-- malty-fruity with a seriously bitter-herbal bite on the latter half of the taste. Lingeringly hoppy.
Crisp and sweet-citrus-dry and really enjoyable.
Recommended! One of my favorite Japanese beers.

A: single finger head on a cloudy golden with crimson hues body. excellent lacing

S: citrus from pineapple and grapefruit, very clean, mild on the malts.

T: flavor understates the citrus compared to the aroma but it is still there. breads, light malts and a nice juniper presence. Mild pine and earthy hops throughout.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation. creamy body.

Overall: very drinkable. very palatable. the aroma is full. The flavor drops off a bit but is still better than expected.

A - Pours with half a finger of white foam on top of a hazy, dark golden body. The head settles quickly and leaves light lace.

S - A distinctive and pungent hop aroma with notes of pine, grapefruit, and juniper.

T - Malty notes of bread and light toffee up front with sweaty, pungent juniper notes in the middle. More sweaty hop flavor comes out in the finish with sharp, chalky bitterness and grapefruit that linger on the palate.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - This is an interesting and somewhat atypical IPA. The malt is significant enough in the flavor to counter the hops, though it is not so noticable in the aroma. The hop profile is the most interesting part of the beer with a juniper note that I don't think I have ever encountered in another IPA. Overall it is quite nice and while the bitterness is a bit on the harsh side, it is still relatively well balanced.

Bought at an Aeon in Okinawa, Japan.

Only the slightest amount of hazing, golden, decent but thin head. Smell is good, not a lot going on but a decent amount of piney hops with some sweetness and maybe a hint of citrus. Taste is very good for a Japanese IPA. Good amount of hops without too much malt coming through. A bit fizzy for mouthfeel but a good lingering hop piney-ness.

Overall this is a really good Japanese IPA. If I had this in the states I might pass it by with so many good US offerings but as I struggle to find good IPAs in Japan that don't cost 10 dollars a pint at a local craft beer bar, this is a very welcome addition to Aeon's normal stock. I probably rated this a little higher than it deserves just because I'm so happy to find this. Doesn't touch Torpedo or others in terms of price/taste/availability but at about 260 yen a can this has become one of my staples.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours medium golden amber with a fine half finger white head with great retention and lacing; nice active carbonation. Great aroma of melon and tropical fruit, caramel and bready malt and light citrus hops. Flavor is very malty with caramel and bready malt, citrus, lightly piney hops and a nice amount of stone and tropical fruit. Medium bodied with a pleasant creaminess. A nice take on the malty style of IPA with good hop support and juicy flavors in the background. It could be a bit attenuated in hops because it may be an older can, but the hops still hold their own. A nice malty IPA.

I get yhis a the convenience store around the corner so drink this quite often.Hops aren't over the top but has a nice malt flavour. Slides down nice and easy:)
Yo-ho brewing's website doesn't mention this being an American IPA.
In fact it won a silver medal in English IPA class.

From the can.
L: a pale copper with a nice finger of head, decent lacing.
S: a good whiff of pine, resin, some underlying grapefruit.
T: a bitter pine start that lingers throughout, or even gains momentum, a bready malt and touch of citrus.
F: nice carbonation on the tongue, maybe a bit cloying with the bitter hops, slightly oily.
O: a little unbalanced but flavourful IPA. A killer choice for this price range in Japan, and solidly consistent these days.

First time I've seen this brewery at the local beer store. Not only that but an IPA from Japan....cool.

Easily managed frothy white head with a murky orange body. This brew made its way from Japan and tastes as fresh as if I was sipping it at the brewery. Plenty of Hops to match the typical american IPA albeit on the mild side of the style. Lively mouthfeel with a good amount of carbonation. Sizzles towards the end of each pull and finishes with lasting resin. Nice.

This is an excellent effort. The price tag combined with the amount of better competition will negate any revisits. A novelty merely because of price. The brew itself is fundamentally sound.

This is a pretty solid IPA. It has all the characteristics I would hope to see in a lot of IPAs, but all too often do not. Nice spicy tones; citrus is clearly around. There is a thick malt base on it too. This was too easy to drink. I always like to take notes on most beers as I drink this one, but I had to really push myself to focus and get some notes down as it was such an easy drinker. As others have said, I don't think the low scores on this one are justified. Perhaps earlier batches were inferior. Regardless, this is a nice IPA. I'd drink this anytime. Too bad I didn't crack it open on the train ride back after I bought it. Would have made the trip much nicer.

P.S. Awesome can design.

Had this in cask condition on tap at Popeye's in Ryogoku, Tokyo. Poured into a pint glass. Very loose juicy bubbles, semi-cloudy orange-bronze brew. Strong hops in the smell with a fruity trace of apples. Thin mouthfeel for cask condition. Spicy aftertaste like pepper with the 65IBUs making their presence felt. Goes very well with tomato caprice. Overall, a decent IPA but not amazing.

Date on the bottom of the can indicates 12/31/13

A: Light yellow or peach in color. Fairly cloudy. Forms a smaller bubbly head. Decent retention and lots of lacing.

S: Not a whole lot going on here. Bready with a mix of mild floral and mild spicy notes.

T: Taste is a bit better and represents an interesting take on the style. Light, but not at all unflavorful. Mild to moderate sweetness. Flavor is sort of lemon-lime, almost Sprite-like, but with a fairly aggressive bitterness (which is not at all Sprite-like). Maybe a little herbal green tea in the mix.

M: On the lighter side of medium. Fairly aggressive bitterness considering the lightness of the flavors of the beer. Medium carbonation.

O: A pretty good beer. It's a different take on the style, less malty than an East Coast American IPA, but with more bitterness and a much more subtle hop-flavor than a West Coast American IPA. Can't justify the price ($5 for a single 12oz can), but I am glad I was able to give it a try.

Nice amber color, a little bit cloudy, with about 1 finger of foam and a little bit of lacing on the glass.

I don't typically have high expectations for the smell of a beer that comes from a can, but this one was surprisingly good. Nice bready malt with citris and just enough hops smell to let you know that first sip is going to be good.

Malty and somewhat sweet carmel taste with a clean, but not overwhelming hops finish. If you want to be knocked over by the hops taste in your IPA this might not be your favorite. If you want a bit milder, but still good flavor give this beer a try.

Mouthfeel is smooth and well carbonated.

A little bit different from most American IPA's due to the sweeter carmel flavor and milder hops, but still very enjoyable.

A: Topped with 4 fingers of yellow head that fades before your eyes in a couple minutes. Yellow orange body with very little carbonation.

S: Grapefruit, pine, turpentine, orange zest, smelly foot, tropical fruit punch.

T: Sweet with tropical fruit notes, papaya, ripe mango, jackfruit, alcohol mostly covered but appears in the nose as fumes. Bitter grapefruit aftertaste.

M: Sappy with a light syrupy quality, virtually no carbonation, lightly sticky finish.

O: Got and drank in CNX Feb 17th, 2015. I see low ratings on this one, but I think it’s a great attempt from Japan. Borders on a double IPA, and is quite interesting. Cool artistry on the can.

A slightly odd fish. The up-front taste is slightly sweet, slightly fruity, with a distinct, well, strong, lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue. In a fresh batch, there's some fresh hop taste after the beer warms up, which melds nicely with the bitterness (in a less fresh batch, it's mainly just the bitterness, but that's fairly pleasant even by itself).

The mouthfeel is the best part -- thick, creamy, with a good "snap."

Not a bad beer, and although it's not the most distinctive IPA out there, it's pretty tasty, and very drinkable, and I think vastly more interesting than Yo-Ho's "flagship" Yona Yona ale (the latter is just plain boring, quite undeserving of the kudos people heap on it...yes, even on cask).

[Viewed amongst its Japanese competitors, however, this beer actually stands out. There's a distinct lack of decent IPAs from Japanese breweries (Yokohama Brewing does great American IPAs as limited-editions, but never seems to put any of them in their regular line-up; Baird's OK, but though their goals are laudable, the taste often falls short; Preston IPA is decent; Swanlake IPA is often good, but the taste changes yearly; most of the rest are crap), and most of those are rather hard to find. Given that Aooni IPA is actually fairly _easy_ to find, and available in cans, it's a great fallback beer that satisfies one's IPA cravings without excessive effort...]

I will be bold and say that some of the reviews below don't read as reliable to me. In particular, the ones in the C-range. This is not so much for the rating as the incompetency in the thoroughness of the review, but I will say this beer deserves MUCH more than a C.

This beer pours a golden orange color with a no more than a finger's worth of head.

The aroma gives away of it being a west coast style American IPA. It has the syrupy citrus that is more grapefruit than other fruits. Maybe some orange peel.

The mouthfeel is fairly thick like in a lot of their beers (I don't know why this is) yet it is still drinkable. The taste was somewhat of a surprise to me as it had this sweet citrus going on Just as the aroma was, very much an American West Coast-style IPA. Not pungent, yet not weak. The end is well-balanced as it isn't overly-lingering.

Overall, I think it is an average IPA. But considering the current state of craft beer in Japan, they still nailed the west coast IPA style. Also, considering the taxes on barley that causes beer in Japan to be stupid-expensive, this is most likely the best price on a good IPA in Japan that is easily accessible.

Overall a decent but maybe lacklustre IPA. Light copper body. Some fruity, slightly bland aromas. No real character I guess. Pleasantly malty, drinks with some fine piney hop bitterness at the front. Well balanced too. It's not a bad beer by any stretch, well made and all. Can't ask for much more, but I do.

Appearance: Hazy, copper-gold colored brew with a dense golden-white head.

Smell: Butter, mild floral hops, malt.

Taste: Very subdued IPA. The flavors are not as up front as I am used to. Not very hoppy, but has a nice hint of pine. Slight malt aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium body. Slightly oily finish.

Drinkablity: Decent yet understated IPA. With a few tweaks and a more hops this could be a good Japanese IPA.

12 oz beer can was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: The beer poured a one finger head that has reduced to a thin layer and left some lacing on the glass. It is a hazy orange amber hue with some floaties floating around in the glass. There are also signs of carbonation coming up through the center of the glass too.

Smell: There are some bready and sweet malts along with some hints of citrus too.

Taste: Pretty malty and bready. Citrus and bitterness is there also.

Mouthfeel: silky smooth, medium carbonation, medium bodied, and a little chewy.

Overall: A pretty mediocre IPA in my opinion. Spent a lot of money at Bierkraft in Brooklyn just because I never have seen or heard of the brewery. Good to see Japan making IPA's in a can, but this one needs a little more love. The floaties also did not add to the taste either like other beers with floaties.

A: Pours a dark amber to copper in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation and lots of sediment floating in suspension. The beer has a two finger tall dense off-white head that reduces to a thin film with a thin patch and slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate lacing is observed.

S: Aromas of cereal malts and some slight amounts of caramel malt sweetness. The beer has both floral and citrus hops present.

T: The taste is similar to the smell with a very nice balance. There is an upfront caramel malt sweetness. That is followed by lots of citrus hop flavor with only a light amount of bitterness that lingers slightly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly chewy.

O: The beer is very well balanced and one of the easiest drinking IPAs I have had. Definitely enjoyable and a good beer.

A pretty average IPA. Goes down easy.

Pours an orange/light coppery color with a medium size off white head. Head retention is good and there are patches of long-lasting lacing.

Smell is mild hops bitterness, certainly not top tier IPA experience.

Taste is fairly good. Balanced...not a hop bomb. Primarily bready malt with finishing hops bitterness

Mouthfeel starts off crisp but a little thin with a metallic aftertaste. The more you drink, the richness increases and the aftertaste recedes.

Overall this is a pretty tasty beer but nothing exceptional. The fact that it is in a can, makes it more portable for the IPA fan.

Pours golden with good head/lacing.

Nose: Agreed with lacqueredmouse on the slight "extract" qualities. Malt is kind of reminiscent of a creme brulee or custard tart. Definitely a malt-dominated nose, caramelised fruits and sticky rice. Quite clean and fresh though.

Taste: More general sort of fruit custard/peaches and custard type smells. Does have a finishing bitterness which is easily commensurate with the style.

Mouthfeel is smooth and highly carbed with some (pleasant) cooked rice notes and a lingering bitterness.

Not what you would necessarily expect from an American IPA but actually quite enjoyable. Very drinkable with no off-notes. And definitely enough bitterness to justify the style.

Crystal-clear, golden hued body; thick, foamy and fizzy, white head. Nice pine aroma with lots of caramel sweetness. Caramel malt flavors with a terse, almost biting hop bitterness. Medium bodied; slightly coarse; finish begins with a sugary sweetness and ends with a mostly dry character.

A decent IPA that drinks easily enough. It seems decently balanced and has a fair amount of depth as far as flavor and aroma go yet does not set itself readily apart from other IPAs.

Brought back for me by my sister in law, thanks for the opportunity Terry. Pours a deep golden amber color with a creamy snow white head that slowly recedes to rocky lace. Smells like a macro lager with a bit more caramel and a touch more hops. Bready, grainy, pilsner malt like aroma with hints of rice and spicy earthy hops. Taste is sweet with honey like bready grain malt. Again hops are quite restrained for something that claims to be an IPA, barely showing off a spicy earthy flavor. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet watery mouthfeel. Flavorful beer, nice drinker with no major issues, but its certainly a stretch to call this an IPA. Cryptic code on the bottom of the can reveals no clues as to this beers age.
