Inky black (SRM 40+) in a Dogfish Head snifter. A thin, dark chestnut, creamy head quickly becomes nothing more than a ring above a thick, viscous film. Tiny carbonation lazily develops from within.
The aroma is that of rich, luscious chocolate syrup, followed by heavily roasted, almost burnt malt. Ground coffee makes way for a lactose aroma. Warmth brings out some vanilla.
Roasted bitterness amplifies a chocolate/coffee balance as anticipated from the nose. Sweetness comes out in the middle, giving way to a milk stout finish. Warmth develops the coffee flavors and, very late, brings out a hint of brandy.
This one has a full body and syrupy smooth texture. It is almost flat, with fine carbonation. Well controlled alcohol ultimately dries out the beer.
This is a fine Stout to enjoy while reading on a wet autumn day. While it lacks the intensity I seek from this style, I imagine it would be enhanced by chocolate-covered coffee beans.
