Growler straight from the source. Pours a cloudy pale straw color with a half inch of head. Good amount of lacing. Aromas of citrus hops, yeast, orange peel, and spices. Tastes outstanding. Citrus hops dominates with the yeast, orange peel, spices and some floral notes. Hoppy and tangy. Kind of tastes like if 668 and Gold Stock had a kid. A delicious kid. Great amount of hoppy flavor to this one. Perfect beer for the warm weather. Nice amount of carbonation and medium bodied. Slight amount of bitterness. NebCo does it again. Overall, drink it if you are ever given the chance. Well done.

On tap at the Cask Republic about a month ago, served in a shaped pint glass.

Pours a light golden color with a touch of cloudiness. Decent sized white head leaves some lacing behind.

Hmm, nice profuse smell of hops in the aroma, a touch of cracker malt in the background.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this beer, to be honest. Hops? Hefeweizen? Pale Wheat Ale? Beer??? Just kidding, but I decided to prove for myself what it was and I was slightly surprised by the outcome. It actually starts pretty hoppy, bitter and resinous with a touch of spice. The middle has those cracker like wheat tones and it finishes sweet with a dash of lemon. Very nice!

Mouthfeel is pretty neutral, touch on the wet side, mild carbonation.

Yeah, I dig it. Probably the best APWA I've ever had, actually. While the "weizen" part is deceiving, review this beer as a Pale Wheat Ale and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Have never had a chnace to try this until now. I think Matt said this is about 5%

A) Pours a nice cloudy yellow with a very puffy head, nice lacing.

S) A bit lemony, certainly not very strong.

T) You can get a bit of the cloves, but this beer is very nicely slightly hoppy. Wasn't expecting that but the brewer said they were going for something different. It is different and that is a good thing!

M) Nicely carbonated

O) Glad I had a chance to try this. Very nice summer brew.

Picked up a few growlers of NEBC's newest creation, Alpha Weizen, this week....and I am already fiending for more.

This hopped up weizen gives off the most awesome aroma of citrusy hops. It is like a fresh bouquet of grapefruit and lemon peel in my face.

I like my wheats hazy, so the clear lemon blonde pour of this is only slightly disappointing. But hey, some people filter some don't.

Hooray!! The taste of Alpha Weizen indeed lives up to the promise of its nose while maintaining its origins of style. This is definitely a wheat, you get that nice light bread and spice twang but overall the hops really shine through. Grapefruit, pineapple, lemon rind, all the major players come out with the generous Cascade and Centennial hops.

Drinkability? You betcha. I would grab a pint of this anyday over Gumballhead or Oberon. I <3 hops.

Reviewed From Notes, Growler Consumed on 07/18/11

A: light yellow-orange body, some hazy, billowy head, and heaps of lacing

S: hoppy! floral, pine, pineapple, some notes of wheat and hints of banana, a glorious nose

T: plenty of hops, but crisp wheat finish, fruity (banana and citrus), but not sweet, a touch of bitterness, supremely palatable

M: adequate carbonation thats important for this rather complex wheat beer

O: really wish they'd bottle this one, its an all growlers on deck event for me...a perfect wheat beer for the hop-heads, but also a great intro beer...

One of my least favorite styles of beer. It's a shame that so many American brewers call their pale american wheat ales hefeweizens. A hefeweizen is something delicious and special, whereas American Pale Wheat Ales tend to be plain bad. I'm trying this one because I love New England Brewing Co., they brew good beer and the guys that run the place a really great people. I'm going to try to put aside my hatred for this style of beer and rate this to style (or at least with an open mind).

A: Pale yellow. Very straw like. The head is billowing and leaves some lacing on the glass as it goes down. The bubbles in the head look too big however.

S: Very hoppy. They told me at the brewery that they've made this beer hoppier each time they've brewed it. Although nowhere as good as Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse, it is the only other wheat beer I can think of with this much hop scent.

T: Like the smell the hops dominate. True to style it lacks the banana and clove of a true German hefeweizen. Nothing about the taste makes this a very special beer. The yeast tastes all wrong. It tastes like the other beers from NEBco, but not in a good way.

M: The carbonation is high, but feels too sharp in my mouth. I'd like the beer to be a little bit smoother. However this seems normal for pale american wheat ales, it just doesn't work for a beer called a hefeweizen (even if it isn't).

D: I drank almost the whole growler in one sitting. The abv is very low and the beer goes down quite easy.

Even though I didn't like this beer very much I think I will go buy a second growler. Perhaps this style will grow on me. To date this is hands down the best American Pale Wheat Ale I've ever had. I looks forward to this being available in cans next summer.
