Vanilla on the nose, butterscotch on the way down. Ridiculously lush. Still has a hop presence. I enjoyed this more than others in the style . Does it need to age? Probably, but it's pretty damned delicious right now. The bottle design wins bonus points for Danny's finger and the carpet pattern, hilarious and tasty all at the same time. Love the creative spirit.

This is the best beer I've ever had.

Bottle 350/850. Had side-by-side with Premeditated Murder. 12oz. bottle into Torst stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Very much like the base beer but without the head. Beer is a cloudy, dark mahogany. Very very heavy. Lacing is thick and layered with good stick. The lack of head really hurts though.

Nose is completely different. Dominated by the rum barrels. Sweet candied brown sugar notes. Some woodiness. Fresh purple and green fruit sweetness. Very aromatic. Real enticing.

Opens sweet rum booziness. Fresh green raisin, pineapple, brown sugar, honey, and molasses. A slight hint of woodiness lingers in the back. Hot. End is rum and molasses sweetness. Finishes brown sugar and more molasses and syrup. Much sweeter than the base with a much bigger malt body and almost no hop presence. I love it!

Feel is almost identical to the base beer. Full bodied with low carbonation. Thick and oily in the mouth and goes down smooth and viscous. Messy finish that is even heavier on the booze with a sticky, filmy aftertaste. Big alcohol bite right at the end. Real solid for the style.

Not all beers benefit from barrel aging but this one certainly has. The rum barrels give the beer more presence and really serve to fade out the (to me) unpleasant hop presence. A very solid beer and I can only seeing this one getting even better with age as it smooths out and reveals even more complexities.

Bottle 49/150 poured into a snifter. There is ano head to this beer and pretty much zero in the way of lacing. Colour is a light brown. The nose belies rum, caramel and vanilla..following if up with the taste you get the same thing with maybe a bit of raisin. The rum presence is very high and it is not overly sweet, and actually there is a slight bitterness at the finish. Mouthfeel is slick with pretty much zero carbonation. I hope they do this again!

2014 Edition (1264/1400)... A standard pour yields a fingers worth of lush khaki colored froth that displays minimal retention... Once receded there is an uneven splotchy veil of lacing with a thin collar... A few carbonation bubbles can be seen bursting through the surface... The color is a medium to dark flat brown that allows some light to leak in around the edges... A light to moderate bit of carbonation streaks can be seen towards the top of the glass... The aroma is huge and be detected without bring one's nose anywhere near the glass... Brown sugar... Dark fruits... Warm dark breads... Toffee... Butterscotch... A touch of tobacco... A light spiced rum character adds some nice complexity... Good depth and complexity... Full bodied... Ultra sleek... Ultra smooth... Sticky... Chewy... A wee bit of carbonation... All the expected characters are present on the palate... The ebb and flow creating layer upon layer of complexity... The warmth of the rum barrels rises on the finish... Quite sophisticated... A definite sipper of a barrel aged barley wine... A bit less than the sum of its parts... Certainly worth a try if you're able to procure a bottle... Very very good, but a bit shy of world class... The rum isn't overpowering, but the barrel aging doesn't quite work in perfect tandem with the beer itself... Still a rather satisfying brew with lots of redeeming qualities... A few small tweaks or some more time in the bottle could co a long way...

A: The beer pours a dark burnt caramel red, with a thin white head that quickly fades to nothing but a ring around the glass.

S:Really sweet, with a nice amount of booze. I am getting a fruitiness to this beer too.

T: This is where the beer truly shines to me. First thing I notice is the Sailor Jerry rum flavor with a banana type flavor that lingers after it sits for a bit.

M: The mouth feel is absolutely perfect to me. There is a perfect amount of carbonation with a very slight tingle on the back of the throat. It just goes down so easy.

O: This, to me, is up there on the same level as King Henry. just every aspect of this beer shines in its own way and I can't find one thing about it that I would change. Thanks again Dave for sending me a bottle of this!

HUGE thanks to davey101 for this allusive motherfucker! Bottle 98 of 850:

Swampy tobacco brown with a creamy khaki cap that laces perfectly, with slow soft beading beneath.

The nose on this is surprisingly tame. Caramel and toffee with earthy oak notes... hardly any indication of rum, but it smells nice for what it is.

I was a bit hesitant to take my first sip, after reading such mixed reviews. I'm happy to report that if there are indeed bad bottles out there, this surely isn't one of them. Chewy chocolate and molasses, sweet heat from the rum contribution... loads of vanilla... red licorice... plum... leafy tobacco... wave after wave of flavors. You would never guess this is as dynamic as it is judging by the nose alone. Complex. Delicious.

Fuckin... wow. Thanks so much Dave!
