Got round to reviewing a cask one at last: I have this so often when out it seemed a shame not to review it, in fact I've started to review more cask ales while out now (when the wife isn't with me).

This is a great brew and although the bottle version is fine a well looked after cask one is superb and a joy to drink. For a better review see my bottled one, just add superlatives where you wish.

On cask at the Bridge House, Belfast

Pours with a light amber body, few orange hints. Thick creamy dense slightly off white head with good retention. Some patchy lacing

Smell, slight grassiness and fresh whack of dry english hops. Some very slight sulphur aroma, faint crisp malt.

Taste, crisp english bittering hops, lots of quinine like bitterness and a touch of sourness on the finish. Biting crunchy malt on the finish along with some tart citric hop character

A solid and refreshing ale, well hopped

500ml brown bottle, BB 06/2008, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: pale golden; a fluffy/puffy layer of white foam settles gradually to a rimmed head, on top of lively carbonation
S: lightly floral and limey, on top of a cane-sugary and honey-ish smell of pale malts. Very ordinary, albeit not of low quality.
T: the quite neutral and boring foretaste of boiled vegies and cane-sugary malts is followed by a (better) soothingly tannic bitterness as of green tea, while a lightly tangy tinge of tart citrusness and a dryish but aromatic palate of hops (reminiscent of Styrian Goldings) help to provide some positive elements (in terms of palate) in the short aftertaste.
M&D: the texture is way too fizzy and sharp for my palate; this light-bodied (though not thin) golden ale perhaps fares better on cask, but this bottle version only tells an uninteresting story, I'm afraid.
