Bottle with no freshness date poured into a tumbler glass. Poured a thick 1/2" head which died down to 1/8" over 20 minutes. Lots of lacing on the glass as I drank it down. The color was a translucent brown with some hints of orange. I did a lot of sediment in the bottle that didn't pour out.

The smell when cold right out of the bottle smells like grapes, and as it warms up I get some malt, molasses, and ethanol smells. Very complex and it changes the more you let it warm up. Towards the end of the glass I only got the malt smell.

Taste is equally complex. After the smell change upon pouring I let it warm up a bit before drinking it. At first I get roasted malts (hints of coffee and molasses again) and then something bitter at the end. I can taste just a hint of grape (raisin) again in there with the other flavors the more it warms up.

Mouthfeel - some carbonation/spiciness on the tongue but otherwise slick and thick.

Drinkability. Well - I want to try it again but the alcohol went to my head quick even with a meal so this is a beer for savoring and I stop at one. It's very complex and I wonder what it would be like if all the sediment went along with the pour. Or I'm wondering if the beer was old and the ABV is actually higher than the 6.2% on the bottle. If it is old (no way of knowing) it does cellar well but I'm wondering what it's like fresh. I do like the beers from this Japanese brewer, so maybe if I'm ever in Japan I'll visit this brewery and try a few on tap.

Had a pint of this at the Baird Beer Harajuku Taproom. A beautiful clear brown ale with a nice thin white head on it. Amazing aroma full of nuts, hops, caramel, and wheat. The taste blew me away... so smooth and powerful yet not overwhelming even for dinner. Couldn't put this one down! The mouthfeel was perfect too, not overly carbonated, and left a smooth feel in the throat unlike some other brown ales. If you have a chance, grab this and enjoy it! It is one of the more ubiquitous bottled Bairds out there!

Had this on tap again at the Nakameguro taproom. Still amazing, but lowered the score for smell and overall. Not the greatest brown ale on the planet, but close!

Bottle bought in Tokyo, poured into a pint glass.

A: Light brown, almost a really dark orange.

S: Dark fruits, light chocolate and coffee, sweet grape.

T: Rich. Starts out with the fruits. Dark fruits are present with a hint of citrus. Bitter middle with blend of citrus and bitter chocolate/coffee. Ends with nice roasted malts but there are some lingering hops/citrus as well.

M: An interesting mix of tangy citrus and creamy darkness...

O: Great beer. I haven't had many browns that have this much fruit/citrus.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a handglass.

A: Medium brown. Pours a 2 finger, frothy, brown-white head. Settles very slowly and unevenly, leaving some dry sticky residue behind as it does. Persistent lacing.

S: Roasted malt, plenty of raisin and molasses and some tea leaf.

T: Very woody roasted malt. Slight peaty bitterness.

M: Bitter notes linger on the palate briefly before disappearing into the nether.

D: Not much resistance but worth savoring.

Atmosphere is excellent. Very nice frothy head, and plenty of persistent lacing. Nose is roasted malt accentuated with sweet and herbal components. Hearty wood-roasted malt with a little bitter finish. Overall, this is a really good quaff.
