A great find here in Greensboro,I have wanted to try some Baird wares and this was just incredible.Poured into a standard pint glass a murky amber/bronze with a thick very clingy slight off white head,I mean it never totally fades!A great mix of piney/citric/grassy hop, caramel,and molasses,personally I think the hops prevail.The flavors of this amber to me are at near standard bearer for a new generation of amber,its got a huge dose of citric/piney hop but there is a real buttery caramel base that holds up great to the hop onslaught.The lower fermentation temp makes the beer so easy to drink and keeps the complexity super high.This was a treat do drink,people seek it out.

The hop complexity of this amber is why I love it,it has almost every trait of a hop,citrus,pine,tea,leaf,and spice.Its a great brew.

A- This beer pours a hazy brown thick body with a beige head that sticks to the glass in a big of a meniscus. There is a bit of trub suspended in the body with a gentle carbonation gliding to the surface.

S- The clean brown malt aroma has some green dry hop notes in the finish.

T- The brown malt has a slight tartness that fades into a bittern soft green hop finish that has a bit of a green bit that lingers. There is a dry caramel and toffee note to the malt and a green woody hop character comes through as the beer opens up.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel and a smooth texture.

O- The nice dry malt has some good depth to it when it opens up and a nice balance with the mellow hops. This is a good session beer with a nice full flavor.

360ml bottle. I'm getting used to seeing these Americanized ales from Japan, with no discernible info on the label beyond the brewery and beer name. Ahhhh...first wave.

This beer pours a cloudy dark orange-amber hue, with three fingers of densely foamy, and chunky pale beige head, which eventually settles, leaving some sudsy layered lace around the glass.

It smells mildly at first of mandarin (I know) orange citrus, followed more strongly by a biscuity, bready caramel malt, with a touch of toasted character slowly rising, along with a hint of earthy yeast, and further grassy, leafy hops. The taste is more lightly singed bready, biscuity malt, kind of metallic, muddled citrus notes - more yeast-borne in origin than hop, strangely - and some further piney, floral hops.

The carbonation is moderate, just a prickly frothiness persisting throughout, the body just on the light side of medium weight, and generally smooth. It finishes off-dry, the floral, citrusy hops subtly overshadowing the latent bready caramel malt.

A pretty enjoyable, moderately hoppy (and mirror world at that) amber ale. However, as the hops fade, the remainder just doesn't scream out 'can I have s'more please' to me. And speaking of 'ahhhh', with bit of apophenia tossed in just for fun: Tomoyasu Hotei just popped up on my random mp3 list. Oh yeah.

Clear red copper with a thick, firm white head.

Lovely perfumed floral rose nose with Belgian sugar and very light sugared creamed coffee.

Mouthfeel is thin but good and the flavor profile makes up for the crisp mouthfeel.

Flavors of bright espresso and a finish of bitter coffee and grapefruit hops.

Actually quite drinkable; goes down well and has concise flavors with a very nice balance. This could be a "regular" for many.

Pours amber with a quickly fading head.
Nose shows caramel, bready malt and some resinous hops. Nice malt character.
Malty flavours too. Bready malt and sweet syrupy notes. A fair bit of resinous earthy hops too, along with an assertive, well-balanced bitterness.
Carbonation could be a bit higher.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a brown/amber color with about an inch and a half frothy off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both pretty good. The aroma is malty and fruity, it smells like caramel malt, strawberries, and a little bit of hops and ginger. The hops come out a lot more in the taste, it tastes like citrusy and grassy hops, caramel malt, and some spice (ginger and maybe something else I can't identify) and strawberries. Mouthfeel/body is medium, carbonation is average and it has a dry finish. Drinkability is good, it's easy to drink and very enjoyable. I believe this is the third brew I've tried from this brewery, and I haven't had a bad beer from them yet, they're all pretty decent from what I've had so far. If you get a chance to try this or any other brew from Baird, you should. Recommended.

Poured from the bottle into a tumbler glass.

A very light cream caramel head and creamy texture looking, sits on a dark honey brown and cloudy with pinhead clear bubbles rising somewhat slowly. Some good sticky clumping lacing in places.

Nose is an interesting brown sugar, and some malt sense. Floral fruit sense as well.

Taste is a nice light amber and candied floral sugars. Good texture with a sense of mild crispness. Yeasty aftertaste on the finish.

Overall a different take on a red ale but I rather enjoy it.

I found this single 12oz brown bottle at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale, IL for the rather steep price of $4.99 a bottle. No freshness date but the label is cool.

Expecting a rose colored brew considering the name and style, but instead got a murky dark honey colored beer with a nice 2-finger white head that lasted several minutes and left some good lacing.

Not a lot of aroma here. Some swirling and a big whiff gave me some brown sugar and a little fruitiness, but not much else.

If your looking for a red amber on the sweeter side, this isn't it. Hoppier than most reds, this one gives off some pine, earthy, and flowery hop flavors with some bitter kick to it as well. Malts are mild but there is a fruit aspect to it as well (mainly apricot and peach), but the fruit isn't juicy ripe.

Feel wise this is a very dry beer with medium body and medium to high carbonation.

Well made, but not my favorite tasting amber/red ale. Those who don't mind their reds on the drier side may like it more than I did.

The second of two Baird offerings I picked up in North Carolina. They made a good first impression, and hopefully this follows up nicely!

A: Quite hazy, like an unfiltered honey colour in some ways. The head forms beautifully into a pillowy cloud of gently rolling, creamy head.

S: Slightly fruity with a pleasant floral bouquet, along with a nice and modest malt profile. Both the aroma and the flavour are very similar, with a hint more hop coming out on the palate, most notably toward the finish.

M: It's medium bodied, but it has a mildness to it. Carbonation is moderate, and it finishes with just a hint of dryness.

D + notes: This makes a couple of Baird offerings now that I've been pleased with. They offer a nice flavour and yet a sensible and easy going beer with this one, and it's nothing short of solid. Good beer, and it has me very interested in trying more with high hopes!

From a 360 ml brown bottle, the abv is listed on the label as 5.5%. The rep also mentioned to me that this is actually a California Common.

Pours out a hazy/cloudy amber, not necessarily opaque, but still turbid. Tall creamy and frothy off-white head that slowly settles.

Light sweet grains on the nose, some toastiness, a quick zip of citrus hops, and a longer ligering of floral/perfumey notes.

Well then, based on the hop content in the flavour this would certainly be a West Coast Amber if that was the intended style, and remains an assertively hopped Steam beer if one wants to approach it that way. Starts off with clean dry grains, then herbal, leafy, grassy hops rise up to take charge, finishing with spicy hops. A perfume character in the aftertaste.

Medium-light mouthfeel, texture is slick and a bit oily, low carbonation.

Here's a beer that will satisfy those who are into Old World hops, doesn't really remain memorable for me when all is said and done.

Pours an exceptional 1 1/2 finger head with great retention and lacing and a slightly hazy copper color. I was careful not to pour in any excess yeast.

Smell is of an english ale yeast strain that accentuates the malts underneath with fruity esters and a bit of hop aroma to balance.

Taste has a toffee sweetness with a balancing hop bitterness and hop flavor. This isn't over the top hopped red nor is it a malty boring red either.

Mouthfeel has a nice carbonation and fullness, however the mixture of the amount of carbonation and the body of the beer isn't quite perfect.

This is a nicely balanced red. Hop flavor comes through with a good malt balance. The flavors start becoming more and more interestind as the beer warms.

This was a very good beer. I didn't expect too much out of a Japanese brewery; not because I don't like Japan, just because I feel like Japan puts more effort into Sake, Shochu and Whiskey and because I have had some Kirin and Sapporo beers and thought them satisfactory. You can't compare Red Rose Amber Ale with those beers, like you can't compare bud and sierra nevada. One's mass produced, one's quality produced. It's not the best beer I've ever had, but well above average and definitely worth trying again. Very drinkable.

This one pours a golden amber with a rapidly receeding head becoming a foamy thin line with scant lacing. Smells sweet, hoppy and floral with hints of pine. Ititial flavor is hops followed by moderate malt and faint citrus notes. Nice light body with crispy carbonation. This could almost be called a B.I.P.A. (Baby IPA) Excellent.

Poured from the bottle an opaque amber brown with two fingers of creamy tan head.

Aroma of toasted caramel malts, ripe strawberries, and brown sugar.

The taste is toasted malts, bitter hops. The finish is chocolate and lightly metallic.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery with just a hint of carbonation.

While not one of my favorite amber ales, this one hit the spot.

Generous, tight-bubbled head that remains rocky throughout the tasting. Lots of chunky lace on the glass. The color red-orange amber with a solid haze.

Sweet, hoppy and attractive. Floral aroma of fresh hop cones. Enough malt to make it very balanced. Close to perfection.

Beautiful bitter. The malt is present but in the background. The hop, if I am hyper-critical, is leaning toward the harsh side. Extraordinarily drinkable. If I were to have a complaint, it would be that the liquor is on the thin side for such a flavorful beer. Still, this is an exceptional beer well worth seeking out.

Slightly brownish head, foamy, creamy and long lasting. The body shows an opaque dark amber color. Impressive appearance. The smell reveals the same aromas as in other Baird beers. The sweet red fruits/ strawberries are more pronounced in this one, and some notes of ginger also appear. Nice. The taste is pretty much swwet red fruits, with a chocolate like hoppiness in the back of the palate. Hops are quite grassy too. The mouthfeel is less enjoyable than in other Baird beers, a bit weak, and not exactly what I expected from a red ale. The dry hoppiness is too pronounced for my taste (and maybe for this style). What's the IPA gonna taste like???. Low carbonation. I wouldn't enjoy many of these, and I don't feel like drinking this every day. Kind of a deception among the other Baird beers.

Pours a slightly hazy, copper color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of hops, sweet malt, slight alcohol, and slight dark citrus. Fits the style of an American Amber / Red Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of hops, sweet malt, slight earthy malt, slight herb, citrus, and a hint of smoke. Overall, a nice blend, body, and appearance.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a rust color and a cloudy consistency. There was a huge, creamy, long-lasting head and excellent lacing.

S: Had a very malty presence in the aroma, along with some hops and a slight floral quality.

T: Tasted of roasted malt, bitter hops going down and a slight, almost citrusy quality. A tasty combination.

M: A decent amount of carbonation and a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

D: This is the third beer I've had from Baird and, I think, the best. It's easy to drink and well made.

Japan's own Barid Brewery devises a recipe that harks back, not only to Irish influences of their red ales, but back further to the English bitters. Though the American microbrewing trends dictate the simple balance of malt and hops, Barid's does a little more.

With it's deep golden, medium amber hue, it's obvious where Red Rose got its name. The slight presence of dark grain stains the beer with a mild redish glow. Medium haze both captures and diffuses the light, giving it a pleasant glow. Firm creamy foam character beings to take the shape of cask ales as the tepid carbonation casts long lasting, yet understated retention and lacing patters all the while.

Delicate aromas of malt, caramel, bread, and biscuit fill the nose with a firm, but not overly toasty scent. Complementing hop aromas give balance to the nose with a whiff of damp sod, fresh cut grass, and lightly floral character. Even the yeast get in on the action with supple fruity notes that are reminescent of marmalade and "Juicy Fruit" bubblegum.

And with the delicate balance of caramel malt and hops in taste, it's less toasty and more bready with underlying biscuit flavors that are overlaid with the broad and earthy bitterness of English hops. With the timid bread crust flavor, or citrus hop notes, the English ale influence is felt through and through. Where fruitiness isn't hop derived, the sweeter fruit flavors of oranges, apples, peaches, and pears come from yeast esters instead.

Medium bodied, the beer seems to take on a richer upstart, but with the creaminess of carbonation that's well embedded into the bready malt starches. But after the carbonation subsides and the malt character recedes, the beer finishes soft and dry. This carries the hop bitterness through to a short lived linger of woodish or minty taste.

If tasted blindly, I might have put this ale into a more English-oriented class. There's several small deviations from Irish red ales or American amber ales that puts this offering out of character; but Red Rose is a very pleasant and easy drinking ale that was a delight to have in the glass.

Baird Red Rose Amber Ale

Appearance: Poured from bottle into pint glass. Dark amber, guess at 25 SRM. Looks like a good deal of carbonation, head has almost vanished in the middle just keeping around the edges. Lotta tiny bubbles. Oh and I cut myself opening, thanks bottle opener thanks alot. Also has blond highlights at bottom.

Smell: Smells almost effervescent picking up some sourness, with a faint touch of hops. Little bit of malt sweetness back its in the back

Taste: First thing I get it the carbonation, then the hops, then a dry clean finish, I guess from the bottom fermentation. Hops are sour in character. malts flavor is not so much sweet as just, a little flavor trying to hold down the rest of the beer. After a sipping starting to get more of the sweet malts flavor. some interesting flavor in there but I cant quite get it. It really is reminding me of darker lagers like Brooklyn Lager or something like that. But at the same time the malt character is a little more pronounced.

Mouthfeel: Its a little to bubbly for me, I feel like the carbonation is still in my mouth. Other than that light with a little bit of quick stick to it

Drinkability: Yes, very drinkable, its light and just slightly above session-able ABV with some malt base and a crisp fairly clean finish

I had this Japanese Amber in a glass stein.

Appearance- This is a hazy auburn with bright pumpkin highlights. The carbonation travels swiftly to the impressive two-finger head. The puffy, clumpy foam has great retention and leaves random chunks of off-white, orange lace.

Smell- There is a cloying and phenolic scent to this one. It is not very appealing. There is a citrus quality to the nose as well, but I would not describe it as hoppy, lemon is the most noticeable.

Taste- The beer starts out slightly bitter with a wheat and grainy taste. There is a little grassy hop coming through. Also a slight estery quality to the drink, maybe a little floral. The malt also has a distinct honey quality to it.

Mouth feel- This is a watery medium body. It finished pretty clean and easy, but it just does not stick.

Overall- I would appreciate this more if the flavors were not so muddled or soft. It is far too difficult to distinguish what exactly what I am drinking.

It is a decent enough amber that is easy to drink, but in the end it is too boring and has a weird, off-putting nose.

Served on tap at Baird Nakameguro Taproom

A - A small finger of very thick yeasty fresh tap head. Lots of clarity in this beer. Color was red, similar to rose hip herbal tea. Strong lacing that blankets the sides of the glass like carpet bombing

S - Smells were thick and complex. Enticing me with the glory that was to come. Lots of yeast lots of hops. Plenty of crystal malts. Some grassy hop tones and some more bitter hop tones also prevailed.

T - The smells were pleasant and alluring, but the taste was a disappointment. Tons of hop but too little malt too little yeast. The balance was off. The bitterness overpowers everything to the point of making other flavors immaterial. If hop, malt, yeast are all instruments in this band...then the hop needs to turn down his amp. He's getting feedback. Aftetaste as you can guess was hoppy.

M - A bit loose and watery. Bitter aftertaste dominates the experience.

D - Poor balance. Would be fine in a situation where you needed a hoppy beer to chainsaw through other flavors. I was mostly disappointed because the smells of this beer are great. Tastes not so much.

I see that this is a hybrid of sorts (ale yeast at a lager-like temperature).

Pours a cloudy amber color with a frothy head into my glass. It's not a rose color but close.

Smells more like a California Common Ale than the style it's listed as. A mix of fruity malt and pine hop notes.

Taste is much the same. Sweet malt with very little if any hops. Caramel shows up as a component. Nothing too dramatic.

Lingering sweet malt and light hops. Not too bad. Some bitterness too.

A confusing beer that was more than likely mislabeled.

Pours a turbid and murky brown with a 2 inch foamy light tan head that settles to a thin film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Chunks of sediment can be seen floating around in the beer after the pour. Smell is very malty with some fruity and floral aromas. Taste is very much the same with some earthy, fruity, and slightly floral flavors. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a somewhat crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice aromas and flavors but definitely unlike most other beers of the same style I have had in the past.

A hazy brownish amber with some sediment, thumbs width of tan head has decent retention slowly falling to a thin film that leaves a few patches of lace

S some fruity and floral hops with a little caramel

T close to the smell with a little sweet malt to balance out all the hops

M a little flat with just a little bite and it leaves a slick feeling on your gum's

D very easy to drink, I could session this for quite some time. well rounded and worth trying for sure

another winner from Japan and I'm quite happy with how many of them are on the shelves here in Alberta.
