Brewer's Notes: Baird Morning Coffee Stout 2006 is formulated to specs similar to a Foreign Export Stout but with one major twist – the addition of fresh coffee beans to the ingredient list. This year, we ground at the brewery and steeped in the whirlpool a Mocha Blend Coffee with beans coming from Brazil, Ethiopia and Indonesia. The rich sweetness of the mocha coffee is aided beautifully by a blend of highly roasted Chocolate and Black malts, while the stimulating acridity of the java beans is underscored by an ensemble of Nugget, Horizon and Mount Hood hops. Somehow, this mysterious brew is at once both enervating and energizing!

Pours black with a light tan head.
Nose shows old coffee and soft roasted malt. Little else.
Very similar flavours; old coffee grounds and dry roasted malt. A little sweetness underneath shows up later.
Body could be a bit thicker, feels a little weak at the moment.

Pitch black with a smooth, creamy tan head. Decent head retention but not amazing. After a couple of minutes no head remains.

Fruity, mildly roasty and chocolatey. There are some nice coffee notes and the earthiness adds a little depth. Not bad.

Rounded with an earthy coffee flavour. Nice light sweetness. Some caramel but not much. Hints of fruit and some acid. Pretty good.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Good for the style.

A solid beer with a nice coffee hit. It is a little thin and odd but I still like the individual components.

Update on the 2012 edition, it's 7.5%.
If you love coffee , hand grind your coffee like I do then use a Vietnamese drip, this is for you. It's more coffee taste then anything else. If I was given this, told it wasn't beer but coffee, I may be tricked into believing so.
This is truly a hand grind, black coffee lovers dream! Rated lower with others in mind, for me it's great, yet most people I know who like coffee don't actually like the taste of bitter coffee, if you love bitter coffee run, fight, dance, or do whatever you have to do for this!

On tap at the Nakameguro Taproom in Tokyo, Japan.

Like the Baird Saison, this is identified as '2009', but what tweaks have been performed I do not know. What I can tell you is that it uses a mix of three dark roasted malts, roasted barley and Guatemalan coffee from Tully's. At 7%, perhaps ordering a whole pint of this as a nightcap is ill-advised, but the flavours are so rewarding who cares about the next morning? Pitch black with a good two fingers of tan head that exhibit great retention and lacing. Strong, strong coffee aroma is mitigated by milk chocolate, cream and caramel.

On first sip you realise how well balanced this is. Of course the coffee is at the forefront (and a good brew it would make), but its more than amply supported by brown sugar, cocoa and vanilla notes. There's a slight warming alcohol sensation, and the wonderfully full body is slick on the tongue. This is why coffee beer makes a better end of meal drink than regular coffee.

This is one of the best coffee beers I've had yet - the flavour is intense and extremely well-integrated. On this evening, its also probably the pick of Baird's lineup. Good work!

22oz bottle. 2008 vintage. sampled sept 28/08.

pours opaque and nearly black with a big fluffy light brown head. the head drops very slowly and leaves tons of lace behind.

aroma is good. coffee. milk chocolate. bit of dark chocolate. white bread. cracker. hint of biscuit. bit of roast. light toasty component.

taste is good. medium bitterness level. dark chocolate. bit of bittersweet chocolate. coffee. roasty. toasted multi-grain bread. biscuit. caramel. bit of vanilla and anise. light alcohol. touch of fruit.

mouthfeel is good. medium-large body. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is good. well balanced. more chocolate than coffee, but still a nice stout. good stuff.

500 ml bottle brought back from Japan and generously shared by Chris and Kyoko.

Pours a thick and opaque black, very dark, thick tan head forms, drops a ton of lace on its way down to a thick layer, this certainly looks like a stout. Smell is nice, lots of oats, chocolate, lightly fruit, vanilla, coffee beans, strawberries, caramel, bit of yeast, I would have liked a bit more coffee roast in this. Taste is similar, big chocolate and coffee roast, more oats, caramel, light fruits, alcohol, vanilla, very smooth, very balanced, nice to drink. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, goes down without a hitch. This is a nice beer, and both I've had from Bairds have been more than solid. Thanks Chris and Kyoko!

Ingredients: Malt, hops, yeast, coffee beans.

Frothy topped black stout is dark enough to be opaque -- but is certainly not mud either. The nose was the highlight of this coffee brew for me, awesomely complex with elements of carbon bitterness and coffee roastiness paralleled with an estery malt sweetness recalling vanilla and fresh red fruits.

Full flavored in the mouth developing many of the flavors detected in the aroma. Balanced roastiness and sweetness with substantial bittering in the aftertaste. Very light mouthfeel however from the bottle-conditioned beer (I believe), very low level of carbonation. Taste is reminiscent of the Guinness export stout, which really says it all..

The coffee addition comes across most in the nose and to a lesser degree in the mouth, in the form of a delicious sour coffee taste. Great stout and great coffee beer.
