According to the brewer's blurb, this uses exactly the same recipe as their (wonderful!) "Rising Sun Pale Ale", but substitutes Belgian yeast.
It looks great, a medium copper color, a bit cloudy, with a spectacular fluffy thick offwhite head rising well above the top of the glass; after drinking for a while, it leaves a firm lacing. The visual impression is of extreme freshness.
The smell hits you next: it's realllly citrusy. This is not subtle, and there's nothing Belgian about the smell, it's an American-style pale ale up front and center.
Finally, the taste.
The "source beer" for this, "Rising Sun Pale Ale", is definitely an American style pale-ale, but it's somewhat subtle, with a light and refreshing sweetish citrusy hoppy taste, like oranges; the flavor's great, and it's a little "watery" in a good way. It's a wonderful summer beer that manages to be light while still satisfying a hophead.
"Baird Belgian Pale Ale" clearly shares a lot with Rising Sun -- it definitely has the citrus, and an American hop bitterness -- but it's also a very different beer. Unlike the light and effervescent nature of Rising Sun, this is hmmm, _spicy_ is the word that comes to mind; and maybe a little "thick" and "murky" (flavors, mind you). It's hard to describe, and not obviously like any Belgian beer I've had, but it's really nice, meshes well with the citrusy flavors, and is a great change of pace.
If you were getting just a little tired of the simple hoppy citrusyness of many American beers, but don't want to entirely give up those flavors, and don't want to resort to drinking malt-bombs.... well this is highly recommended and interesting twist.
The mouthfeel, by the way, is great, a snappy medium, with a light fluffyness from the huge head.
[Baird seasonal beers usually seem to be crazy fresh as well...]
