Like the guy chasing Ichabod Crane, his dark brown brew bears no head at all. None. Nada. Zilch. I've never actually seen a beer with an absolute lack of head. This is actually very surprising considering the amount of carbonated fizz on the tongue.
The aroma is malty and sweet with a somewhat musty or fungusy smell hiding behind the malt.
My first impression is of a very clean malt flavor, with some earth, bitter cooking chocolate, and coffee. The finish is IMO overly bitter and doesn't fit the malt forward profile at initial sip. It's like being lured into a trap with sweet malts and then being slapped with a sour bitterness. Don't get me wrong, bitter is good. I love DIPA's and I religiously bow at the altar of the big green hop, but the bitterness here is more unpleasant, unwarranted, and really just doesn't seem right for this beer.
The mouthfeel is thin, fizzy, and a bit weak. These are not bad things for a lager, I just prefer something thick and heavy to chew on for a while.
The light and fizzy feel would make this headless horseman extremely drinkable, but that odd sour pucker just doesn't seem to fit in with all of it's other qualities. I'm not really impressed with this one. It's not at all bad, it's just ....not quite right.
edit: I had another one later and it proved to be more enjoyable the second time around. I'm bumping the taste and mouthfeel up just a little.
