Dark brownish/black with a small head which disappeared fast.

Smelling roasted malts and caramel.
Tasting roasted malts and caramel.
Not much complexity at all to this beer.

My first Dunkel, not sure what to expect

Light, thin head that dissipates quickly. Medium-bodied with a color that appears almost like coca-cola. Nutty, sweet smell from its traditional Munich malt. Taste is clean and toasty with a lightly sugary finish. Very flavorful and an excellent foray into the world of dark lagers if you're only used to lagers with lighter malts.

L: Beautifully dark hues, almost looks a little red in the right light. Thin head that left a lacy trace.

S: Very malty and roasted aroma, which surprised me for lagers, but this is one of my first dunkels so I was a little unsure of what to expect. It was giving off some faint toffee odor as well.

T: Great taste and great body in my opinion. Thin and a little weak at the front but come in strong at the back. Toffee and roasted malt flavor was well done, there was even something that reminded me of coffee. I usually don't drink lagers, but the dark characteristics of this dunkel really impressed me. Very light hops, but enough to notice.

F: Went right along with the taste, weak at first but a full bodied feeling at the end. Its thick enough to be happy with a little, but light enough to drink a lot of.

O: Very impressed. I'll have to branch out more into dunkels after this. I would certainly buy this beer again, especially for the fall and winter months.

Pours a ruby/brown sort of colour, semi-translucent, with a two-finger film of loose, bubbly head. The head recedes quickly, but there's some runny lacing.

Initial smell is a lovely chocolate, roasted malt aroma. Beyond that you get some bready, cracker/biscuit malt and a bit of a spicy, peppery noble hop character. Slight bitter greens, slight herbal. Not bad. Taste is initially a chocolate/coffee character, somewhat creamy, with some noble hops arriving to generate a bit of balance. Again you've got the bitter greens/grassy/hay, slightly spicy touch of the hopping. A bit of mineral water. The body is surprisingly creamy, while maintaining that lager-y mineral, "crisp"-ness. Moderate carbonation. Slight metallic twang and a faint yeastiness on the finish.

I'm not sure that this is a great beer from a technical standpoint (it needs a bit more to balance out that initial chocolate creaminess), and yet it's still a nice, easy drinker. Nothing I'd actively seek out, but worth trying.

Pours a not quite opaque dark brown, ruby. Smells like coors light immediately. Almost a smoked lager aroma. Kind of a spicy/fruity hop presence. On the taste, a bit more of that smoky flavor dominates. Bitter hop presence in the after taste. Mouthfeel is on point, refreshing anytime of year. Overall, a pretty nice, drinkable, approachable beer. Lots of other choices you would rather enjoy that are similar yet tastier than this. Stick with those NYD.

Pours dark, almost-white head of 2 fingers. Very appealing appearance.
Aroma was a barely detectable malty smell. Malty taste.
Smooth, easy drinking taste, mouthfeel is slightly thin.
I enjoyed this beer and could easily drink all night.

it's on the lighter side for a dark beer but that was expected. it still has a good rich and full flavor despite it's lightness and very smooth as well.

In autumn, I mix some fall beers into my mix 6 packs. This has a fairly nice roasted malt, but is not spectacular. Is this brand the Budweiser of Berlin?

Served in a pint glass from a 11.2 oz bottle.

Appearance: Brown with a orange tint with heavy bubbles on the body. Body is thin but once poured the heavy bubbles create a thick (off-white) head rising to almost two finger's length.

Smell: Scent is weak, light light hops.

Taste: Sweet maple-ish type finish with heavy malts, comes off a bit bitter. But super smooth.

Mouth: Medium to heavy carbonation with bready and maple finishes.

Overall: Good brew, picked it up for a wedding I was attending and everyone loved it. I am a bit of a beer snob so I am trying to give you both sides of the fence. Don't hunt for this brew, but definitely do not pass it up. Delivers enough flavor and keeps the conversation going. Salud!

On tap, pours mahogany brown color with a creamy 2 finger tan head that faded slowly and left good lacing. Smells and tastes of caramel malts, toffee, caramel, toasted grains, cracker, wheat, brown sugar, earthy tones (like peat moss and dry leaves) and minor floral spices/hops. Good basic dark, sweet German beer to quaff at an Oktoberfest event (which I'm doing as I typed this).

Pours the color of soda pop with thick white head. Coffee and toffee notes. Thin body and not heavy to drink. Has a some type of taste as of the water came from melted snow. Not bad for the price but not the best I've had

A clear red-brown lager with a white foam head. Subtle aroma and a smooth roasted malt taste with hints of dark fruits. The reasonable price is what makes this average sessionable dark lager a good choice.

On tap at BC's Pizza & Beer

A: Pours dark brown with a big creamy light brown head that hangs around and leaves a little nice lacing.

S: Toasty, bready, a little coffee, toffee, faint floral notes, and a little dark fruit.

T: Toasty bready malt, light coffee, a little dark fruit, and some toffee burnt sugar sweetness.

M: Light body, moderate carbonation, very drinkable.

O: Very solid drinkable brew. I easily went through a litre of it.

11.2 fl oz bottle, best by date February 06, 2016. My first review of a Warsteiner beer. My label lists a 4.80% abv. Acquired a single bottle as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - Pours a garnet brown with hues of cola / red showing through when held to the light. One finger of frothy off-white tan head. No real lacing sticks. Looks nice nonetheless.

S - Light but roasty. Toasty malts, brown bread, chocolate, & nuttiness.

T - Flavor follows the nose: toasted malts, brown bread, chocolate, cream, and some nuttiness. Simple, but a refined taste. I am actually really enjoying this. Mild notes of minerals / well water in the finish.

M - The feel is smooth & creamy. A light body with good crisp carb.

Overall, a pleasant roasty Dunkel beer from Warsteiner. Surprisingly enjoyable.

Poured 12oz bottle into glass. Product of Germany. 4.8% ABV

Appearance- Pours a dark charcoal color. Two finger head that has a brown tint. Decent lacing. Opaque.

Smell- A blend of cereal grain malt with cocoa, some roasted coffee aromas too.

Taste- Fresh earthy grain, with a lighter chocolate flavor hiding behind all that barley. Finishes with a smokiness. Some herbal hop fisnish but very minimal.

Mouthfeel- Thin in body. Very smooth with lively carbonation.

Overall- I was impressed with this beer. Complex, and drinkable. Thin, yet flavorful. The chocolate notes blended nicely with the malt. Prome example of a not so common style. Excellent.

This is a light funnel but it exhibits all the characteristics that should be noted. Chocolate malts, light coffee, barley, grain and some smoky char mix well in an easy yet dry feel.

On tap.
Amazing I haven't rated this beer before given that it was a staple in my beer supply last century before the coming of the craft beer revolution.

With a clear mahogany body and a decent head this is not only good looking, but good tasting as well. That's a little reassuring given my history with this beer even though, to be honest, this was heavily influenced by price back in the day.
Plenty of toffee and medium malt with enough hops to give this a fairly neutral bitter-sweet balance.
Some darker malts too and just a hint of smoke.
Very nice.

Pours a deep brown with a ruby tint. Clear. Fat head of creamy foam that lasts. Smells like sweet toasted bread crusts. Malty and with a bit of depth. No hops scents no diacetyl. Good malty palate. Rich, dry crisp and a touch of sweetness. Finishes malty and with no discernable hops . Medium mouthfeel and a slight astringency when you first taste it.

My husband is a fan of Hefeweizen beers. His mind was recently blown after drinking a "Dunkel" Hefeweizen. Not being the most knowledgeable about the German language, he assumed all Dunkel beers were also Hefeweizen. He bought a 6 pack of this beer and was sadly disappointed, as he hates most porters and stouts. It's the coffee flavors that off put him. But at least it means I get a 6 pack of beer all to myself!

As for the beer itself, I'm rather enjoying this Dunkel Lager. I don't think I have had one before. It's all of the nuttiness or a Stout or Porter, without the heaviness.

Very pleasant malty beer with nice yeast overtones and enough hops to give balance. Very true to the style from BA's description:

"smooth, rich and complex, but without being heady or heavy. They boast brilliant ruby hues from the large amounts of Munich malts used, and these malts also lend a fuller-bodied beer. Bitterness is often moderate, with just enough to balance out any sweetness."

Exactly and at $12 for a 12 pack it is great value. More than just OK, drinkers who are into malt will find this a solidly "very good" beer.

500 ml can, poured into a mug at ~40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a clear hickory brown, and forms a thick, fluffy head of pale off-white foam with good retention. Lacing is decent.

Smell: Bread, mild toffee, and something vaguely floral waft out of the glass.

Taste: See "Smell". The taste opens with bread and mild toffee, with hints of faint light caramel. That is joined by some floral and spicy notes as the beer moves along, and the aftertaste is a lingering mix of all of the above.

Mouthfeel: Thin and light-bodied, without ever quite getting all the way to watery.

Overall: A decent Munich dunkel, especially for the price point I paid for this batch of $1 per half-liter!

Look: Deep dark brown. Not much light passes through. about 2 fingers creamy white head dissipates quickly. Light lacing and no carbonation visible.

Smell: Deep roasty, almost smokey, malts. Kinda reminds me of percolating coffee by camp fire at hunting camp.

Taste: Its a little roasty, a little chocolaty. Also a weird bitterness at the end.

Feel: Like the camp coffee. Thin but numbs my mouth.

Overall: Not bad not great. Slightly more complex than the Pils. Kinda meh.
