From a 500mL can. As an aside, it's listed here as 4.9%, but my can says it's 4.8% - regional differences? Who knows. Anyways, at the risk of sounding like a beer newbie, this is the first dunkel I've ever had, so let's see if I've made a new friend:

Looks great. Deep copper brown colour with a fluffy beige head. The smell's fairly rich, sweet maltiness, with molasses and bread.

There's an initial malty bite to the taste. Distinct carbonation kick in the mouthfeel, but goes down with a nice creamy smoothness. Nice aftertaste, too - butterscotch, a subtle bit of hops spiciness. Not something I'd drink in huge amounts, but it offers a refreshing change.

Overall a fine addition to my beer repertoire. If this is only an average dunkel according to your reviews, I'll gladly seek out a "good" one

Poured from 11.5oz bottle into standard pint glass . Vigorours pour rewarded with 3 fingers of pure white head that dissapates rapidly. Receeding head leaves slight traces of its climb up the side of my glass. Smell as expected, is total malt . . Caremelly malt immediately showers your taste buds . The fine carbonation contributes greatly to the taste, it almost refreshes your tastebuds. Thin mouth-feel and lack of depth are the only short commings. Finishs with a slight malty sweetness . This is a nice session beer as it has a nice malty character with out being too heavy.

Far superior on tap!

one of my fav. dunkels ; pours a clear, deep copper-brown w/ a thin light tan head which dissipates quickly leaving a moderate lacing in my pils glass ; a subtle smell, cereal grain, toasted nuts, and hints of dark fruits and noble hops ; a crisp, malty flavor, nutty w/ a caramel-like undertone, faint fig/date-like notes as well, an excellent finish ; very dry and light bodied with plenty of co2, this beer feels like it evaporates off your tongue ; a very drinkable beer, i'm def. gonna stock this up for summer...

500mL can, 4.80% abv. Fridge temp. Into a wine glass.

Ruby-chestnut body, a nice substantial tan/off-white sudsy head. Cloud and collar quickly.

Dunkel and schwarz noses throw me off so much. Noble hop spice abounds here. Mineral waterish notes too, with some weaker caramel maltiness.

Super aggressive carbonation. Palate is very malty-sweet, with the spice much more subdued here. Nutmeg. Brown sugar. Cocoa. Quite good, really, with some leafiness in the finish. A bit chalky.

A mediocre dunkel.

Not a huge Warsteiner fan, but saw this on tap and decided to give it a go. Poured a dark brown color with a small head that died quickly. A light, malty smell that is somewhat earthy and hopdriven. A good malt taste (cocoa?), but mostly hop driven with a touch of caramel to give the light-to-medium body smoothness and also hints of citric fruit. Not my first choice for a dunkel, but this wasn't too bad. Liked it more than regular Warsteiner.

I was looking for a starting off point in German beers and the guy in the beer store pointed at Warsteiner....I hope there isn't their best. This beer pours brown and somewhat thin with a bit of head that goes away quickly. The malty flavor hangs a bit in the throat but otherwise is nice. No real hint of hops or other flavors.

Not terrible but I'll look for another before trying this guy again.

I always like the dunkel variety of beers and I have been going on a tasting spree with German darks. Had this cold in a pub glass. Poured a clear Coke color with a decent head. Smelled mineral like with a little grassy note and some faint chocolate malt. Taste was sweet and slightly metallic but smooth and drinkable with some upfront chocolate malt and hops in the background.

12 oz bottle poured into a pils glass. Thin head that quickly recedes to nothing. Color is a dark caramel with moderate clarity.

Smell has an initial sulfur funk, but then mellows to a grassy hops and a hint of chocolate. Taste is dominated by the grassy hops that also hint at lemons. The malt has a dryness to it with hints of chocolate and banana.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with a mild carbonation. Clean finish. Not too shabby.

Draught @ Fox & Hound: This one pours with a decent sized white head on it. It doesn't linger long. There was no real lacing to it. The color is a ruby-tinged brown. The aroma was OK, although not too strong. notes of molasses, caramel, maybe a hint of roastiness. Slightly less than a medium body. The taste was slightly sweet with notes of the caramel and molasses. A hint of hops for balance. Not very exciting, but very drinkable.

A-Dark brown but not opaque with little head and minimal lace
S-very subtle coffee smell
T-light coffee taste goes down very easy with little to no aftertaste.
M-light feeling with a good finish the subtle coffe hints tend to stay in your mouth as you finish the beer
D-A very easy beer to drink as its very crisp and refreshing, even for a darker beer.

Appearance: Dark amber-brown brew with a shallow off-white head.

Smell: Slight hop presence with malt undertones.

Taste: Slightly smoky malt flavor with mild hop to provide balance. Came across slightly watery.

Mouthfeel: Light body. Good flavor retention though.

Drinkablity: Decent and drinkable brew.

A - Small, off white head with little retention and no lace. Dark copper-brown body with good clarity.

S - Some earthy hop aroma with a little bit of caramel.

T - Mild dark malt character with some caramel and mild bread flavors. Little to no hop flavor and mild malt in the finish.

M - Medium body and somewhat mild carbonation. Slightly sweet finish.

D - Easy to drink but pretty weak for the style. Some decent brown malt flavors, but kind of bland and watery overall.

Man, I liked this one a lot more than most people it seems. I thought it was wonderful.

Beautiful clear dark amber/brown coloring really makes this brew great to look at... one of the best looking brews ever..

Aroma of sweet dark roasted malts and maybe a little coffee here... after all the recent hop bombs, this is great...

Ridiculously smooth and delicious, I could drink this regularly. Sweet malts blend with that merest hint of coffee to make this one tasty brew..

Loved it, loved it, loved it... What else can I say?

My go-to beer for a few reasons. Satisfying, crisp, inexpensive.

The perfect everyday, after-work beer. Pours a nice dark brown color, with a thin, lingering head. Smells very malty. Light carbonation. It leaves a slightly burnt molasses aftertaste.

I love Warsteiner so I went out and tried the Dunkel as well.

Pours a clean brownish read, alot of head but dissapated fairly fast over only a few minutes, not really an issue here.

Smell is interesting here, smells alot like coffee, in fact, the coffee scent is very dominating, maybe a hint of sweetness.

Again with the coffee for taste. Sweet up front with some flavor and a smooth coffe finish, malty aftertaste, nice all around.

Mouthfeel is about average, weight is fine but nothing special, carbonation is right on.

Drinkability is good, I'd do it again, great with snacks.

I tried this last night for the first time and was Pleased. Pours dark brown with small white head that goes quickly to a ring. It smells of malt, Chocolate and Coffee. Taste is very nice not as strong as I thought it would be very pleasing in taste. Mouthfeel is refreshing and nice.Drinkability is good you can drink a few and not get to full. Overall I was pleased and thank my Friend for telling me to give it a try. The one thing that I did not like is the bottle is 11.2 instead of 12.oz. I can state this is a very nice beer for a change from lighter beers and a pleasnt one to drink!

Poured a clear reddish brown with a thin off white head that wisped away to a slight ring with some slight lacing. Smelled of roasted malts. The taste was a little thin for my taste but I think I am just used to stronger beers. It was smooth roasted malts with a hint of sweet chocolate and some coffee notes. The aftertaste is quite pleasant and there is hardly any bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin but the carbonation makes this one well rounded and very drinkable.

Pours a nice muddy brown with an off-white head.

Every time I crack open a Warsteiner Dunkel I sit there and inhale almost as much as I drink; tonight being no exception. Smells of roasted malts and a vague underlying hint of chocolate.

Though the taste isn't quite as magnificent as the smell, it is still a very pleasant dunkel. Tastes of dark roasted malts and has a bit of a light bit of a coffee taste.

Goes down smooth, not thick in the mouth by any means but has a well halanced carbonation level and leaves a pleasant after-taste. I won't deny that I savor my burps when I find myself drinking this, I don't care how assanine that sounds.

This is very drinkable, I usually have to talk myself out of opening another as my nights turn into mornings.

(though this review does not cover tap drinking, I have had this on tap and it is absolutely magnificent)

As a footnote, I'd like to add that if you are put off by this by the brand name alone, try it out. This is so much better than Warsteiner's lager.

Poured into a pilsner glass from a 11.2oz. bottle. The beer pours a dark copper, forming a 1/2 inch thin white head, which leaves light spots of lace along the glass. The aroma is very malty, along with a slight grassy aroma and a hint of skunkiness. Nothing too complex. The taste is also very malty, a bit of caramel, and finishes with a little bitterness. Smooth light mouthfeel. Very drinkable. Light alcohol and decent flavor. Overall, not too bad. A good afternoon beer.

Smells nice and malty, but weak and a bit metallic. Taste is headed in the right direction, but never really gets there. Tastes of roasted malts and even a very slight chocolate flavor as the beer warms. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth. Unfortunately the flavor doesn't develop as much as it could, and leaves me wanting some complexity to this. Drinkable though.

Beer on-tap (50cl), tasted 2001 (Pub Roma).
Appearance : amber brown color,
Smell : The aroma is malty (roasted malt)
Taste and Mouthfeel : Very light bodied. Most of the flavor is on the back end with malt sweetness, caramelized honey, little bit of chocolate.
Drinkability : a good beer in the style dunkel lager

Pours with a small pale white head that quickly subsides to a ring around the glass. Very dark almost black with a few tints of deep brown around the edges, very bubbly, looks alot like coke.
Smells of roasted oats, very deep smell.
Even with the apparently heavy carbonation you cant really taste it. The flavor is very deep and tastes of roasted oats and coffee. A fairly smooth flavor that never really spikes but pleasantly trails off.
Rolls around on the tongue alright but the bubbliness of the carbonation is a little irritating and very noticeable.
For as dark and heavy as this beer is, its surprisingly drinkable although more than a couple would fill you up pretty good.

A: Pours a dark ruby brown with not much head.

S: Not much smell. A little bit of German malt (munich?) with a little spicy hop note.

T: Balanced. Not very exciting, but I do not think this beer is made for adventure.

MF: Thin. It is a lager, but thin nonetheless. Lacks needed carbonation.

D: Very drinkable. I wish they made this in cans.

Ruby hued with a very thin head. Almost no retention. Sweet aroma with hints of brown sugar and plums. Given the very sweet smell, I was surprised by the lack of flavor. Overly sweet maltyness up front with a slightly astringent aftertaste. The sweetness was poorly balanced, with very little hop character.

The latest in a run through some German beers my wife got me...

It pours out and looks an awful lot like Coke or Pepsi, with less fizz. Some head formed at first but it dissipated pretty quickly and stayed gone. Halfway through it looked like stale pop. No haze to it.

It smells quite sweet and syrupy, like molasses, with some hints of dark chocolate too. Kind of intriguing.

The flavor is a little bready, but that's it - I can't find the flavors for the aromas I detected - it's mostly quite bland. A little aftertaste.

Very watery and pop-like in the mouth. Nothing to cheer about.

I drank it sort of fast, because there wasn't much to it. Overall, quite a disappointment.
