The Mothman Black IPA is a hop forward, medium bodied black ale. The strong hop flavor is from the use of the choicest Pacific Northwest hops; lending to a balanced bitterness of citrus and hints of floral. The German 2-row and English Crystal malts offer a touch of roasted toffee and chocolate. At 6.7% abv and 71 IBU’s, this Black IPA promises to satisfy any hophead.

12oz can, tulip, best by 10/20/21.
Quite dark brown with very little highlighting. The head is a good sized medium to dark brown.
Pine, dusted cocoa. Simple but very nice.
Hershey’s syrup with hops, but not that sweet. A bushel of pine and earthy hop flavor, some of the best pine hopping I’ve had in awhile.
Medium-light body, medium carbonation, yet creamy feel.
This style seems to have been a bit of a fad, but I’m still a fan. I especially like piney versions like this.

12 ounce can poured into a can glass.
Pours brown and clear, two fingers of tan, rocky foam leaving sticky lace. Nose is moderate in strength, bright and hop forward, citrus, floral and slightly resinous aromas with small fruity esters. Taste starts sweet and hoppy with an assertive bitterness that builds to a more dry roasty and bitter finish. Medium-light, frothy body with a crisp finish. Quick drinking and enjoyable.

I kind of instinctively grab anything from West Virginia because I don't see it too often. I also like the can artwork. Roasted tones and hops kind of cancel each other out in the nose. The flavor is decent, and satisfying enough, but nothing is really exemplary. The roasted flavors turn a little burned after a while and the finish is a bit subpar. Not at all bad, just not a go to for me.

Appearance: Pours a clear cola color with a two finger beige head; excellent persistence and a few shards linger with webs developing
Smell: Ashy campfire elements; very woodsy with chocolate, coffee and earthy hop aromatics
Taste: Chocolate and coffee in the base with a burnt toast character developing; earthy hops, in the middle, with a moderate level of bitterness into the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: A bit to charred on the palate but fun to taste a beer in this style - it was a flash in the pan for a while and the style disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived
Thanks, Treyliff, for the opportunity

Look: It pours very dark brown. There are some reddish hues in the color when held to the light. It has a full brown head. Head retention is excellent.
Smell: It has aromas of toffee, roast, and some earthly elements. There is a bit of an herbal hop note as well.
Taste: There are toffee and caramel malts with a bit of chocolate. There is a bit of earthly elements with some herbal hops.
Feel: It has a medium body.
Overall, a very different black IPA that is more malt balanced, but still firm in hop bitterness and herbal flavors.
