Draft at brewery. Dark amber, not black, do I concur with the choice of dunkel over schwarzbier. Roasty, smoky aroma. Taste adds some nutty character and done sweetness with a mild bitter bite to close it out. Well done!

Consumed at BBC 7.13.2010, served with a lime wedge, $2.50 a pint during Tuesday locals night.
Dark brown/black nearly opaque but clear body, some visible carbonation. One finger light tan head, medium dissipation, with some lacing retained. Nose is fruity, I'd swear there was lime in the beer, thought it was the wedge, but the aroma was prevalent, some mild roasted malt and floral hops. Taste mirrors the nose, the roasting is fairly light despite color. Fairly light mouthfeel for the color of the beer, not really heavy, decent effervescence. I think this is a really drinkable 'dark' beer. I can see what the fuss is about and why Tonya won a gold medal in 2008 with this very good lager. Recommended.

This was one of 3 lagers that BBC had last night. I was very impressed with all 3.
This one interesting enough was served with a lime, reminiding me of Negra Modello. It's not a red/amber ale, not an ale at all, as BA has it classified.
Pours a deep chestnut brown, not dark enough to block light.
Crisp malty aroma, and i'm obviously getting lime from the lime wedge. It's an accompanying flavor, though i'm generally adverse toany beers that require fruit. This one doesnt require the lime to be there, but the contrasting flavors are interesting. I think the lime is in there as cinqo de mayo was last week...
A great drinker! Very tasty.

This black lager is not a schwarzbier but is categorized as a dark American lager and is based on a lineage that includes Michelob Dark by way of the Munich dunkel. It is more of a deep radiant red than the black beer its name suggests, though it passes for shadowed brown in the intermittent light of the bar. It tastes of brown malts, but with a clean, lagered finish and restrained bittering emphasizing caramel-coffee character.
The version I drank of this at The Bend Brewing Brewpub was not identical to the one that brought home a gold medal at the GABF just days earlier in Denver. It's not unlike Modelo Negro and drinks reasonably well though in my view there are numerous beers in the Bend Brewing portfolio more interesting than this.
