The weirdest thing about this beer was that it was more brown than black, they should have called it a brown ipa was the first thing that crossed my mind. It just wasn't impressive looking from that standpoint.

Aroma was hoppy, the malt roast was fairly restrained, but no matter how much dehusked black malt you use, there is still gonna be some roast that comes across. Here, it still smells hoppy and better than your average black ale.

Taste gives bitterness up front, a floral hop presence, mild roastiness. Small citrus hop flavors come out of it, but they are minimal. Mouthfeel keeps alcohol and bitterness from becoming too apparent, roast kept in check to keep this from becoming a porter.

Better than average for style.

More like a brown ipa than a black one, if you judge by color alone. Can't say it looked sexy.

Delivered a hoppy aroma, we're gettin' better now. Seems like no matter how much of the black, dehusked malt you put into these beers, 90% or more of them are still carrying plenty of roast still.

Bitter, floral, mild roastiness in the taste. Keeps the citrus hop derived flavor to a minimum. Mouthfeel throws alcohol and bitterness all over you. I guess this is better than your average black ipa, but it really didn't offer much beyond a bitter hoppy porter description.

OK, I'm not the biggest fan of Black IPAs. My overall view of this beer is that it's a decent, average IPA with some darker malt. The hops weren't overpoweringly bright. The malt wasn't particularly roasty. This was a good little beer, but nothing worth going out of your way for.

On tap at BBC 7.11.2010. Menu noted this as 8.7 % ABV.

Dark brown/black opaque body, no visible carbonation. One finger light tan head, medium dissipation with above average lacing. Malt dominated nose, more caramel than roast despite the color, not picking up a lot of hop aroma. Taste mirrors the nose, a bit of roast malt, neither chocolate or coffee notes, once again not much hops, more floral than anything, and little bitterness on the back end. Pretty full mouthfeel, not a lot of effervescence. Not quite enough bitterness to be real drinkable. Not Tonya's favorite style, but heh, everything she brews rocks! 4/3/3/3.5/3.5

EDIT- On tap at BBC 6.14.11 over lunch, menu listed this Batch #2 as 8.0 ABV.

After some insights from her Baker City Homeboy, this batch is a significant improvement over the test batch last year. The aromatic hop profile was notched up, citrusy, roasted malt toned back down, more for color re carafa then porter-ish malt, and a nice lingering resiny finish. Viscous, coating mouthfeel. Actually quite good, I prefer this to the Full Sail and Deschutes Hop in the Dark. Above score reflects these adjustments.
