It is effervescent with a SweeTART tanginess. Brewed with pomegranate and hibiscus this yum-yum is a perfect thirst quencher that just might push the boundaries of what you consider beer.

Bottle (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, libbey!

Pretty pink/light orange color. Thin off-white head.

Lactic character with good amounts of fruit and a bit of grain. Lemon and grapefruit would be my guess if given this blind with a bit of berry juiciness. Nice.

Moderate sour character, grapefruit and lemon flavors, a bit of lactic. Incredibly drinkable. Nice combination of juicy fruits, lactic sour character, mild grain, and low bitterness.

Thin-medium bodied with low-moderate carbonation. I suppose it could have used a bit more carbonation.

Incredibly tasty fruited berliner.

16 oz can. Pours slightly hazy rose pink with a fizzy light pink head that goes to a thin film that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is sweet fruit with some acidic sour notes and a little woodiness.

The flavor is sweet sugary fruit with an acidic sour twang in the finish. The mouthfeel is fairly light bodied and watery.

Overall, an OK but simplistic and watery fruit sour.

Pour is pale faded pink... like super dilute cranberry juice. Not especially crisp or clear, it starts with a lazy rose-tinged-eggshell pile of wet bubbles that dissipate to not much.

Nose is bright and tart. Lovely floral and berry juicy with a touch of lemon juice underneath.

Initial build is more sour than tart, but with the waves of floral hibiscus and berry-sweet pomegranate, it leans a little more over to the tart/crisp side, almost in a bramble kind of sense. Finish kind of falls off and feels like there's a dimension missing.

Overall this is pleasant enough, and a good accompaniment to a lovely sunny spring afternoon, but after having been looking forward to trying for years, my internal hype outpaces the actual beer itself. That's not entirely fair, but I also can't change that.

16 fl oz pull-tab can:

Currently ranked the #29 Berliner Weisse on the top Berliner Weisse list. "Sour ale" "Pomegranate and Hibiscus." 5 IBU. The designation "Berliner Weiss" does NOT appear on the label/can and their website currently has no information on any of their beers...

4.5% ABV.

Tart, mildly sour, and certainly hibiscus-emphatic (inasmuch as a subtle flavour like hibiscus can actually be emphasized). Finishes a bit smacky. Acidic throughout, which complements the subtle pomegranate seed nicely. I can't say I honestly taste any overt wheat...just neutral pale malts/2-row.

Balanced and enjoyable if a biteen on the thin side. Well-carbonated. Smooth. Wet. Approachable. Hardly a truly puckering or notably sour beer, but enjoyably mellow.

High B- (3.50) / WORTHY

05/09/20:

Tart, acidic, refreshing. The hibiscus and pomegranate play well but are pretty subtle in comparison to the fruity notes featured in most fruited Berliner Weisse beers.

A good Summer sipper. Well worth picking up.

Appearance: Pours with a lot of foam that settles in to produce quite the head atop the peach-hued honey colored liquid; spotty lacing

Smell: Wheat and pomegranate tones with a hibiscus floral element

Taste: Tart pomegranate, up front, with the hibiscus adding a floral aspect; clean, somewhat sour finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: I have had this bottle in my cellar for way too long as it was received as an extra in a trade some time ago; impressive, even with some age

What a pretty beer... Orange with a pink hue, a thin white ring of bubbles, clear and inviting.

The aroma is acidic and full of tart fruit subtleties. Raspberry, hibiscus, pomegranate... Check, check check.

Flavor follows with tons of fresh fruit goodness. A mild wheat grain backdrop plays the perfect platform

Light, less tart than expected, with superb drinkability. Refreshing even on a cold fall night.

Not as tart as your classic Berliner, but so well rounded. This is a remarkable fruited sour with great balance. Cheers.

Color is a pinkish orange hue with initial high airy head. Flowery fruity nose, taste is tart cherries, floral with a bone dry finish. Get better after initial pucker . Re-rate in 2017. More appreciation for this. Up a tick.

Had this a few years ago up in Bend, was able to score a bottle as well. That bottle drank very nicely alongside the pool. Nice gold and yellow appearance, decent clarity, not a lot of wheat running around in the beer. Aroma smacks of lactic lemon sour and mild grain.

Taste, very nice, on the upper end of the sour scale for style, but not at all a problem, very nice. Super clean, not a lot of barrel or funk if any to this one. Neat little addition of hibiscus and pomegranate? Super light body, the tartness has just enough malt/wheat/barley to not come off as overdoing the sour and fruity aspect. Its refreshing and crushable. Very solid choice for summertime. Or outdoor activities.
