A somber beer weighted with fruit leather, congealed honey, and static charged bittering. The aroma is modestly sweet with a pliable caramel effect. But the bittering is firm, especially in the finish. You can't turn your back on it.

Old Wooly is brewed in June and released annually on December 1st. Big Time serves it in 8-oz. snifters. It is ember-glow red and is seductive as barleywines can be. I'd say the 2009 could stand some further cellaring. But it's a must-try when available.

2008 vintage courtesy of BrewerB, thanks Brian!

This beer pours a cloudy, muddy, creek water clay amber in color with slight carbonation. The nose features brown sugar, molasses, raisin, with a touch of vanilla. The flavors are sweet and rich. You get raisin bread, cinnamon roll, brown sugar, and soda bread. Its a little light in body, as expected. This is drinking pretty well for a vintage barleywine. I wouldn't age it further but five years of ageability is certainly possible for this beer.

bomber split with dirtman, little nightcap, you know how we do...

a: one of those not-so-necessary nightcaps dished out after an already full night of craft beer, served in a short snifter, deep caramel amber in color, hazy, nice off-white head with good retention

s: a rich, aromatic barleywine with heady notes of grain and caramel, heavily malty with a range of sweet, dark fruit aromas, estery, deeply citric and pine hop nose, very nice

m: heavy bodied, nearly syrupy on the tongue, with a cleansing light to moderate carbonation

t: always a big fan of a hugely malted barleywine with a good balance of hops, big caramel/toffee and dark fruit flavors - date and fig, brown sugar, pine and citrus, heavily sweet, coating the tongue with rich malt flavors

o: a densely flavored, satisfying sipping barleywine, particularly great as an early-morning finisher

Dec 2011

On tap at Big Time on release date, 2011. Place was packed.

Poured into snifter. Dark amber, with a nice lacing.

Smells malty with a decent hop aroma. Little bit of pine and a little bit of booze.

There was a really nice sweet tang going for it, minimal alcohol burn.

There was still some carbonation for it as it wasn’t aged too long.

I could see this getting more complex with age. As it stands it was pretty good.

Had on tap at Big Time at the release. Review from notes.

A: Poured into a snifter, Old Wooly is a hazy burgundy with a small off-white head on top with minimal retention but some nice lacing all around the glass.

S: Rather fruity with lots of raisin and fig aromas, some caramel, toffee, and faint chocolate.

T: Very fruit forward - more raisins and figs, slightly sweet up front. There is some faint roast, chocolate, caramel, and I got just a hint of mint.

M: Medium bodied, alcohol hidden very nicely. Extremely smooth.

O: Very impressed. Had a few glasses of this and grabbed a few bottles to sit on. Interested to see how it ages.

Pours a somewhat murky dark orange brown. Slight head and no lacing. Delicious dark fruit, caramel and sweet malt aroma. Taste follows with dark fruits, malts and caramel. A bit of hops in the finish; somewhat astringent bitter finish, but otherwise delicious and excellent barleywine. Nice job. Will cellar and review aged.

Thanks Jim(youradhere)

S: Rich toffee and sticky buns, very malty, some dark fruits, prune juice as well.

L: Hazy reddish brown, not much head, some dusting.

T: Prune juice and sweet caramel. Low herbal bitterness leading to loads of sweet toffee, sticky buns and rum raisin. Finishes slightly dry and astringent.

M: Medium full body, medium carbonation, slick on the palate.

Very good barleywine, more English than American. Lots of layers, needs some more time i think.

I had this beer on-tap served in a snifter at the Big Time.

Appearance: rich drk amber with a goodly haze and a thick finger of creamy amber-ivory foam. Great!

Smell: rich sweet malt with a light fruitiness and a great hoppiness. Citrus notes prevail. My only complaint is that it might be *too* sweet.

Taste: rich malt with a biting strength. Nicely fruity, with raisins and tobacco. Dusty in a good way. Bracing bitterness at the end. Awesome.

Mouthfeel: edium rich body with good carbonation and creaminess. I like it.

Overall: based on word count alone, it appears I consider this beer to be quite "rich". It is indeed a very tasty and satisfying barleywine.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this one yet! 2011 edition.

Pours an eerie orange copper, minimal delayed head; smell is toffee, coffee, and chocolate in that order, Gala apple, and american hops. Taste is bitter chocolate and toffee, big C hops; body is medium and carbonation is low-medium. Some slight astringency from the hops, mild alcohol burn- cant wait to see how this one does after a year on it.

A bottle left over after GABF judging and given to me as a reward for my volunteer efforts. Pours a finger of oranged head over a cloudy brown-copper liquid. Smells weedy pine, soured caramel, baby aspirin, waxy orange, pink grapefruit pith, and clean alcohol.

Tastes sweet malt with decent hop flavor and hop bitter that appears but then succumbs to the malt. Malt flavor is light-colored caramel and light brown sugar. Hop flavor is piney, orange pith, baby aspirin. Esters are apricot, pear, dark leathery fruits, and iron. Malt flavor fades in the finish leaving hop flavor standing strong. Hop flavor tapers in the end to a clean alcohol sting. Thick in the mouth, with a lightening alcohol in the finish. Moderate carbonation. Would be much more drinkable with some age to allow the alcohol to mellow, but still quite enjoyable now. A sugary sweet mixes with the alcohol to give a pleasing dessert quality.

2002 vintage poured into a sniffer, big thanks again to Dajtai007 for sharing this one.

Appearance: Riddish-brown, mahogany, with a thin off white head that quickly fades.

Aroma: Very fruity and sweet smelling. Figs, plums, cherries, sweet malt and a touch of oxidation resembling nail polish.

Taste: Sweet and malty with a fruity edge, raisins and figs with a caramel backing.

Mouthfeel: Very low carbonation, but a surprising amount considering its age with a syrupy body.

Overall: Very interesting experience, slightly oxidized but that didn't take away from the beer. It has held up remarkably well a testament to the storage of this beer.

Thanks for sharing this, Jake.

A: The beer pours a hazed dark amber color with a small off-white head.

S: Toffee and brown sugar aromas with a definite oxidation to it. Mild citrus notes as well some additional sweetness of caramel malts. There's a light floral note to it and maybe a touch of booze.

T: The flavor is primarily sweet, sugar notes with a flavors of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. There's a light toast note as well as some citrus peel and some floral and spicy hop notes. Not as oxidized as the aroma, but still some.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: Had some good traits, but definitely oxidation was not helping here.

Courtesy of bvc over on ratebeer, thanks Brandon. This 2009 bomber pours crystal clear amber with ruby hues and off white head. The aroma is a bit boozy and also has notes of caramel, dates, some earthiness and molasses. The taste is smooth sweetness from rich honey, caramel and molasses followed by pine hops, some malts, dates, prunes, raisins and slippery spicy hops. This is one yummy barleywine.
