I can't believe I haven't reviewed this one yet! 2011 edition.

Pours an eerie orange copper, minimal delayed head; smell is toffee, coffee, and chocolate in that order, Gala apple, and american hops. Taste is bitter chocolate and toffee, big C hops; body is medium and carbonation is low-medium. Some slight astringency from the hops, mild alcohol burn- cant wait to see how this one does after a year on it.

Had on tap at Big Time at the release. Review from notes.

A: Poured into a snifter, Old Wooly is a hazy burgundy with a small off-white head on top with minimal retention but some nice lacing all around the glass.

S: Rather fruity with lots of raisin and fig aromas, some caramel, toffee, and faint chocolate.

T: Very fruit forward - more raisins and figs, slightly sweet up front. There is some faint roast, chocolate, caramel, and I got just a hint of mint.

M: Medium bodied, alcohol hidden very nicely. Extremely smooth.

O: Very impressed. Had a few glasses of this and grabbed a few bottles to sit on. Interested to see how it ages.

Thanks Jim(youradhere)

S: Rich toffee and sticky buns, very malty, some dark fruits, prune juice as well.

L: Hazy reddish brown, not much head, some dusting.

T: Prune juice and sweet caramel. Low herbal bitterness leading to loads of sweet toffee, sticky buns and rum raisin. Finishes slightly dry and astringent.

M: Medium full body, medium carbonation, slick on the palate.

Very good barleywine, more English than American. Lots of layers, needs some more time i think.

Pours a somewhat murky dark orange brown. Slight head and no lacing. Delicious dark fruit, caramel and sweet malt aroma. Taste follows with dark fruits, malts and caramel. A bit of hops in the finish; somewhat astringent bitter finish, but otherwise delicious and excellent barleywine. Nice job. Will cellar and review aged.

bomber split with dirtman, little nightcap, you know how we do...

a: one of those not-so-necessary nightcaps dished out after an already full night of craft beer, served in a short snifter, deep caramel amber in color, hazy, nice off-white head with good retention

s: a rich, aromatic barleywine with heady notes of grain and caramel, heavily malty with a range of sweet, dark fruit aromas, estery, deeply citric and pine hop nose, very nice

m: heavy bodied, nearly syrupy on the tongue, with a cleansing light to moderate carbonation

t: always a big fan of a hugely malted barleywine with a good balance of hops, big caramel/toffee and dark fruit flavors - date and fig, brown sugar, pine and citrus, heavily sweet, coating the tongue with rich malt flavors

o: a densely flavored, satisfying sipping barleywine, particularly great as an early-morning finisher

2008 vintage courtesy of BrewerB, thanks Brian!

This beer pours a cloudy, muddy, creek water clay amber in color with slight carbonation. The nose features brown sugar, molasses, raisin, with a touch of vanilla. The flavors are sweet and rich. You get raisin bread, cinnamon roll, brown sugar, and soda bread. Its a little light in body, as expected. This is drinking pretty well for a vintage barleywine. I wouldn't age it further but five years of ageability is certainly possible for this beer.

On tap at Big Time on release date, 2011. Place was packed.

Poured into snifter. Dark amber, with a nice lacing.

Smells malty with a decent hop aroma. Little bit of pine and a little bit of booze.

There was a really nice sweet tang going for it, minimal alcohol burn.

There was still some carbonation for it as it wasn’t aged too long.

I could see this getting more complex with age. As it stands it was pretty good.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with riversideAK (thanks!). 2008 Vintage.

Poured a medium and slightly hazy copperish/amberish/brownish color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, citrus, chocolate, some nuttiness, toffee, and some earthiness. Tastes of citrus, caramel, toffee, chocolate, burnt brown sugar, toastiness, and some dark fruitiness. Alcohol content well hidden with the body on the weaker side.

Thanks for sharing this, Jake.

A: The beer pours a hazed dark amber color with a small off-white head.

S: Toffee and brown sugar aromas with a definite oxidation to it. Mild citrus notes as well some additional sweetness of caramel malts. There's a light floral note to it and maybe a touch of booze.

T: The flavor is primarily sweet, sugar notes with a flavors of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. There's a light toast note as well as some citrus peel and some floral and spicy hop notes. Not as oxidized as the aroma, but still some.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: Had some good traits, but definitely oxidation was not helping here.

taste- caramel, oak, brown sugar

color- amber

clarity- clear but pours dense

smell- caramel, soft oak, toasted flavors

body- smooth on the palate, the alcohol slowly expands on the roof of the mouth and leaves you with a smooth, warm, medium-length finish, velvety, soft and rounded

appearance- faintest hint of lace in one or two spots on the glass, no noticable active carbonation

overall impression-

notes and comments- as the beer warms, the alcohol becomes more present

glassware: tulip

REally nice malt profile. Deep amber malts that smell like caramelized brown sugar. There's a significant amount of hop aroma too, of the spicey variety and maybe a little citrus. But a very deep smelling beer with esters of fruit and spice from the yeast.

Dark amber, smallish head but it lasts around the rim of the glass for a long time. Pretty cloudy though.

Man, big sweet malt proile. Hop bitterness is good so it's not sugary or syrupy. I get flavors of fruit nectar (apricot or peach). Big deep and rich malt flavors. Hop flavor is slight adding a citrus touch. Great caramel and toasted marshmelow flavor too. Basically there is a ton going on with every sip.

Huge bodied, viscosity would be a good way to describe it. Carbonation level is great for a fresh barleywine.

Very frutiy and drinkable right now. It gives every impression that it would stand up to 5 or more years of aging. Really a great beer. Drinkable, not really, this is a sipping and savoring beer, not a drinking beer. But a glass of this and a warm fire or the kicker to a great meal, this is perfect.

I had this beer on-tap served in a snifter at the Big Time.

Appearance: rich drk amber with a goodly haze and a thick finger of creamy amber-ivory foam. Great!

Smell: rich sweet malt with a light fruitiness and a great hoppiness. Citrus notes prevail. My only complaint is that it might be *too* sweet.

Taste: rich malt with a biting strength. Nicely fruity, with raisins and tobacco. Dusty in a good way. Bracing bitterness at the end. Awesome.

Mouthfeel: edium rich body with good carbonation and creaminess. I like it.

Overall: based on word count alone, it appears I consider this beer to be quite "rich". It is indeed a very tasty and satisfying barleywine.

Pours a cloudy orange brown color with a short white head.

Scent of strong caramel, sugars, candy, a hint of chocolate, and a bit of alcohol.

Taste of caramel, oats, a hint of chocolate, and sugars. Rich and tasty, more than worth the price.

Mouthfeel is smooth with a small amount of carbonation.

On draught at the brewpub, Old Wooly is pleasantly glowing, chill-hazed garnet with a light tan head that leaves scattered lace. Really nice color.

Smell is pretty strong cured fruits, dates, humidor. The sweetness of the malt comes though as it warms, gingersnaps.

Taste is pretty good, a nice rich barleywine, fruit and sweet for sure, but not too cloying, and the ABV is well hidden by the smoothness, although there's enough of a bite to remind you this is barleywine.

Mouthfeel is slick, a bit flabby perhaps, medium bodied.

Drinkability is fine, it's pretty typical BW, rich and satisfying but not one you're gonna suck down in too much of a hurry.
