On tap in a pint glass at a restaurant.
Dark bronze appearance somewhat cloudy. Served a little too cold.
Balanced, mild floral hoppiness. A little malt forward and light for an IPA.
Very nice flavors though. An easy drinker. Would make a nice session beer.

On tap at the Big Time Brewery. Served in a straight pint glass.

A: Hazy burnt orange/copper color. Thin head of foam with medium lacing.

S: Aroma of caramel, malt, hops and pine.

T: Bitter pine flavor with some caramel and malt.

M: Standard carbonation for an IPA. There is some bitterness, but it does not linger in the back of your mouth.

O: Pretty standard IPA. Has a nice balance with the perfect amount of bitterness that doesn't wear out it's welcome.

on tap at Collins Pub in Seattle. i assume this beer is a nod to a dead jam, but who knows

appearance: poured into standard pint glass, light amber body, eggshell froth

smell: juicy and full IPA, per the NW standard...grapefruit and other citrus, bready malt

taste: juicy grapefruit and other citrus, touch of pine, hop sweetness and just mild bitterness

mouthfeel: smooth and moderate

drinkability: good

Scarlet Fire is a slighly reddish, slightly cloudy ale with a nice yellowish head which recedes quickly. The nose is grapefruity, sort of a "sharp" smell. The first taste is all hops, but pretty well-balanced. After the initial taste, the citrus flavor comes through. It has almost a sweet flavor sitting on your tongue. There are a lot of hops here, but its not overpowering. Very good mouthfeel and there is a nice finish with a lingering bitterness. For so many hops, this beer is very approachable and drinkable. This is a beer I choose as both a drinkable, session type beer (ok, session beer for me) and a "I am having just one" pint.

I am a hophead & Big Time often has 3 or 4 IPA's on and I consistently choose Scarlet Fire. I have been fortunate enough to try IPA's all over the US and this is the finest of what I would call the American style of IPA.

on tap at Big Time, poured into a standard pint.

A - Golden-apricot color with white head that disapaints quickly leaving a soap-bubb,e ring and bits of lace hanging here and there.

S - Pleasingly hoppy, but in a mellow way with light melded floral, citrus, and herbal character and a doughy body.

T - Fruity citrus and pine hops with toasted bread body with some dry straw showing up late. Nice and assertive but well integrated.

M - Moderate body with nice prickly feel, slight drying on the finish.

D - Very enjoyable and solid...well done.

cask at Old Town, Ballard

a: served in a standard shaker pint, it’s a deep orange-amber in color with a good two fingers of heavy carbonation on the surface, retains well and leaves good lace

s: nice start - grapefruit and pine hop aromas ride over a full body of caramel grain, some fruits and sugars, very appealing

m: smooth medium cask body with a level of carbonation on the low end but not as “flat” as some cask experiences

t: a solid but not overwhelming caramel malt structure balances a hop bill that blends sweet/acidic grapefruit and sappy pine, nice grainy flavors, an initial grain sweetness moves towards a pleasantly strong bitterness

o: a blind choice that turned out nicely, scarlett fire is a crafty ipa and one worth returning to, not much more to ask from a west coast ipa

On tap at Big Time Brewery. Poured to a standard pint glass (this review from notes taken 8/6/11).

A - Poured a hazy amber orange with hints of ruby. 1/2-finger off-white medium-to-large bubble head. Low retention, and very sparse lace. Shines orange when held up to the light.

S - Ruby grapefruit citrusy hop nose, with a hints of pine, light malt, and sweet grain.

T - Ruby grapefruit sweetness without extreme bitterness, and almost a raspberry note over the citrusy and slightly piney hop. The mild fruitiness gives way to sweet pine bitterness, which then transitions to sweet wheat with hints of raspberry and rice, with a tiny bit of butter.

M - Near creamy medium body, light carbonation tingles the sides of the tongue. Bittenress hits the back of the tongue and throat, and it finishes slightly dry.

D - The "scarlet" hints (ruby grapefruit, raspberry) are great. Nice and pleasant and well-blended into the overall sweet citrusy hop bitterness. Subtle carbonation and the rice/grain note adds some uniqueness. Another excellent and interesting IPA from Big Time!

This beer is quite different on the hand pump than the traditional tap. It’s light amber with oragnish hues and a 1 finger off white head that leaves moderate lacing. The nose has touches of floral and darker citrus tones which I think are easier to detect in the casked version than the tapped one. The hops strike early and first on this brew but the malt really does show up in abundance to balance out the taste into a long wonderful bitter finish. Maybe a touch of honey-like sweetness at last swallow. The mouthfeel is crisp for a hand-pumped brew and yet medium-full bodied. This is a very drinkable beer, and its 4.7% abv makes it a great session beer.

Live reviewed from Collins Pub in Seattle. Got a nice full pint of the brew, about 3/4" of khaki coloured head that's thick and sticks like a devil. Body is evenly fogged and a nice dark amber, edging on orange.

Smell is indeed quite hoppy - pine and earthy spice. Jumped right in to get a taste - very sweet for the low abv, with very fruity hop expression. Red apple peel. Malt is pretty retrained - nothing overly toasted, though there is a notable fresh-grain taste of oatmeal. Clay notes. Yeast is decidedly new-world and very clean. Afternotes are a touch alpha heavy and salty.

A sublimely full mouthfeel for such a low gravity. Good carbonation balances this well. a great standard IPA for chewing and quaffing alike.

Appearance: slightly hazy orange / amber color with a 1" head falls to a surface foam rather quickly. Nice lacing develops.

Smell: light citrus and pinecone tones are tough to sense, but they are there.

Taste: grapefruit tones are initially very evident and upfront here, but is eventually balanced with a bready malt flavor and decent pine bitterness.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp and somewhat smooth at the start, definitely smoother at the finish. The grapefruit and bitter tones linger long into the aftertaste. Medium bodied.

Drinkability: superb. I felt this improved as it warmed a bit. The bitterness levels are strong enough to interest you, but not overly hoppy. Nice beer, and a must have if you see it.

On tap @ Big Time on the Ave, Seattle. Pours a nice copper color w/ a 1-finger head.

Aroma is a combination of floral and citrusy hops.

Taste is bitter hops, some tropical notes, pale dry neutral malt holds it all together. Nice sharp bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is balanced, drinkable.

Overall a really nice IPA, but nothing makes it stand out from the crowd.

Mid September 2005. Had at the Big Time Brewery in Seattle, WA.

Presentation- via samplers from the tap.

Appearance- Golden-orange color with a 1/2 head. Excellent lacing as well.

Smell- Some fruity hops, but not much of a sniffer here. Really had to snort to get much of anything.

Taste- Wow, this one is even more fruity than the Perspective IPA I had before this. Sweeter at least. Not quite as bitter.

Mouthfeel- Super creamy and low carbonation.

Drinkability- I will be coming back to Big Time one of these days. Very impressive lineup.

Had on cask at the Big Time. I guess their cask is rotating, and today it was Scarlett Fire.

Appearance: medium amber hue with a ton of haze and a finger of pillowy ivory foam. Looks good.

Smell: earthy, funky, somewhat citrusy hops all over the place; the malt didn't stand a chance.

Taste: much like the aroma; huge earthiness up front followed by a long bitter citrus finish. There was a little malt backbone here, but this beer is all about the hops. Really quite tasty indeed.

Mouthfeel: light-med body with medium carbonation; quite smooth and creamy nonetheless.

Drinkability: very refreshing. Good taste and smell, and quite drinkable too. Another example of a beer whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts
