cask at Old Town, Ballard
a: served in a standard shaker pint, it’s a deep orange-amber in color with a good two fingers of heavy carbonation on the surface, retains well and leaves good lace
s: nice start - grapefruit and pine hop aromas ride over a full body of caramel grain, some fruits and sugars, very appealing
m: smooth medium cask body with a level of carbonation on the low end but not as “flat” as some cask experiences
t: a solid but not overwhelming caramel malt structure balances a hop bill that blends sweet/acidic grapefruit and sappy pine, nice grainy flavors, an initial grain sweetness moves towards a pleasantly strong bitterness
o: a blind choice that turned out nicely, scarlett fire is a crafty ipa and one worth returning to, not much more to ask from a west coast ipa

On tap @ Big Time on the Ave, Seattle. Pours a nice copper color w/ a 1-finger head.
Aroma is a combination of floral and citrusy hops.
Taste is bitter hops, some tropical notes, pale dry neutral malt holds it all together. Nice sharp bitter finish.
Mouthfeel is balanced, drinkable.
Overall a really nice IPA, but nothing makes it stand out from the crowd.

Draft at The Pine Box in Seattle, WA.
Pours a dark golden orange color with hazy tangerine hues and frothy 1.5 finger head that very slowly settles into a lasting ring. The glass is left coated with chunks of soapy lacing.
Floral hop aroma with some grassy pine needle, sweet fruit and biscuity caramel malt. Soil like with pine and grass followed by orange peel and grapefruit. Underneath there is some bread and caramel malt.
Creamy medium body with a crisp, spicy hop bite that lingers over the fruit and malt backbone into a faintly dry finish. Grassy pine flavor along with orange zest and a strong grapefruit presence. Malt backbone is strong with hints of caramel, biscuit and toffee. Usually don't like this strong of a malt profile but it provides nice balance here. Pretty good and very easy to put down.

On tap at Big Time Brewery. Poured to a standard pint glass (this review from notes taken 8/6/11).
A - Poured a hazy amber orange with hints of ruby. 1/2-finger off-white medium-to-large bubble head. Low retention, and very sparse lace. Shines orange when held up to the light.
S - Ruby grapefruit citrusy hop nose, with a hints of pine, light malt, and sweet grain.
T - Ruby grapefruit sweetness without extreme bitterness, and almost a raspberry note over the citrusy and slightly piney hop. The mild fruitiness gives way to sweet pine bitterness, which then transitions to sweet wheat with hints of raspberry and rice, with a tiny bit of butter.
M - Near creamy medium body, light carbonation tingles the sides of the tongue. Bittenress hits the back of the tongue and throat, and it finishes slightly dry.
D - The "scarlet" hints (ruby grapefruit, raspberry) are great. Nice and pleasant and well-blended into the overall sweet citrusy hop bitterness. Subtle carbonation and the rice/grain note adds some uniqueness. Another excellent and interesting IPA from Big Time!

On tap in a pint glass at a restaurant.
Dark bronze appearance somewhat cloudy. Served a little too cold.
Balanced, mild floral hoppiness. A little malt forward and light for an IPA.
Very nice flavors though. An easy drinker. Would make a nice session beer.
