A: Poured a cloudy orangish-lemon like color with good carbonation, a tad sluggish, leaving behind a moderate dirty white cap which leaves behind minimal lacing and a collar on the glass

S: Nose is sordove meh. Big citrus, no surprise here with a toasted biscuity malt aroma

T: Initial taste is layers and waves of citrus with some sweetness riding on a biscuity, toasted grain bill. A little bit of booze in there but I also detect some diacetly, unplesantries and a off-putting bitterness . The finish is moderately sweet, heavy, sticky, bitter and unpleasant.

M: Medium-full bodied, lowly carbonated, some taostiness, bittering hops, funky phenols.

O: No comment

Thanks to queens1130 for sharing this one at jmgrub's birthday tasting.

Pours a hazy honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a sweet malty flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is boozy and more malty than hop-forward.

on-tap, brouwers

Had been looking forward to having this on tap so that I could avoid spending $15(!!) on a bomber - glad I was able to make that happen. Very dark for a DIPA - dirty amber body, light carbonation. Very sweet, sticky-sweet even - approaching a barleywine. If this is truly a PtY clone, then that attempt is a big fat fail. Looking past that, I like the bright citrus hop profile but can't get past the sticky malty base. Glad to try, but this just aint right.

22oz bottle opens with a pitiful pfft. Uh oh, I've heard that sound from Hair of the Dog/Lost Abbey beers before... Pours a hazy, dirty amber w/ basically zero head but some carbonation rising from the bottom.

Aroma is pretty muted for a fresh DIPA/TIPA. Some fruity sweetness, apricots, solvent alcohol.

Taste is big and strong. Heavy malt presence, mostly caramel, with notes of toffee, dried apricot, citrus, and pine. Sharp bitterness cuts through the heavy malt sweetness. Alcohol is surprisingly well masked for a 10.8% brew. Not really my kind of DIPA, but it's growing on me.

Mouthfeel is chewy and thick. Low carbonation doesn't help. Lingering fruity bittersweet aftertaste.

Overall I'm *kind of* glad I got to try this, but at $15/bottle I won't be trying it again. It's not a Pliny the Younger clone, which is kind of what I was hoping for (even though I read a few other reviews before buying it). It's just a big, chewy, malty, hoppy monster of a beer. It might turn into an interesting barleywine someday...

Bottle opened on 2.7.13

A - Pours a dark cloudy orange with a small light tan head with good retention and clumps of retention.

S - Grassy pine, dank orange and a touch of alcohol.

T - Sweet orange citrus, and a touch of pine.

D - Heavier body and good carbonaion.

O - Sweet and citrussy, less pine then expected. Sold, but spend at $15.

At the brewpub today...

The beer pours an orange amber color, with really good head retention and lacing. The aroma profile is pretty good, but it's nothing spectacular either. There's some dank weed, light pepper and a hint of tropical fruit as well. As the beer warmed, there was some pine as well, but again, it wasn't all that pronouced. On the palate, what really sticks out is how sweet this beer is. The beer finishes with some considerable hoppy bitterness as well, but the beer is dominated by the sweetness and noticeable alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is fairly full, but the alcohol is pretty noticeable in this beer, and there's a considerable amount of heat in the finish. Drinkability is really not all that great at all.

An interesting beer, and I get a kick out of the name, but this beer is nowhere near as good as younger (it's not even close). Oh well...

On tap at Big Time Brewery, the first night of the 2014 release, 2-4-14.

12 ounce pour into a tulip. This year's Whiny is 9.4% ABV, by the way, lower than what's shown above by BA for previous years.

Whiny was something of a surprise to me. I had heard they were shooting for a Pliny-like beer, and this is nothing of the sort. This is a much sweeter DIPA than Pliny or other DIPAs I've had. It's both very malty and very hoppy. It's got almost a syrupy mouthfeel. The loads of hops are melded with the sweet maltiness. There's a pleasing bitterness, but it's not over the top.

The appearance, by the way, is quite nice. It's a bronze color, a bit cloudy or hazy, with a good head that lasted pretty well, and then tons of lacing. The entire glass looked like delicate lace curtains, and the lacing stuck around the whole time I was drinking. Never saw anything quite so "cute".

I didn't get very much aroma, which surprised me. Maybe I've got a weak sniffer?

Whiny is a big beer, for sure, and pretty good. It wouldn't be my favorite DIPA, but it might be yours.

Big Time has bottles available right now for $14.50 plus tax. Seems a bit pricey.

On tap to small snifter, via pitcher at Big Time.

A:  Somewhat hazy golden orange. No head due to the pour/glass combo, but some large soapy bubbles and light lacing ring the glass.

S:  Floral hops, not overwhelming. A lot of sweet malts coming through, too.

T:  Malty, then hops follow through the finish. Balanced! Ruined my palate with a stray jalapeño at this point. Definitely more malt-forward than I expected from the name. Delicious, though.

M:  Very smooth. Medium mouthfeel, minimal carbonation.  No hint of alcohol, even at ~9 ABV.

Would like to try this again with a more vigorous pour and larger quantity. Very tasty. Hops weren't what I anticipated.

Pours bright gold, small cap of white foam. Smell is muted citrus and tropical fruit, minimal pine. Taste is similar, bitterness is quite restrained, almost like an imperial pale ale rather than an IPA. Very similar to Walking Man's Homo Erectus, but less bitter. Very pleasant nonetheless, alcohol is well hidden, flavor profile is exceptionally balanced. Slight malt sweetness accentuates the fruitiness of the hops. Mouthfeel is thick and similar to a stout, a slow sipper for the aware, but this could all the same go down way too fast. Very nice offering, I hope this becomes a regular seasonal, and even makes its way to bottles (hint, hint.)

February 20, 2012 @ Brouwer’s Cafe

A-

Whiny is a nice TIPA. Enjoyed a glass right after having a glass of The Younger. I’m always reluctant to gravitate toward all things popular, but while I did enjoy both, I would have to say I would favor The Younger. Whiny is definitely a nice change of pace and a very pleasing beer.

Look – Golden with a slight haze.
Smell – Nice pleasant aroma of malt and hops.
Taste – Citrus, malt, and hops, but no real dominate flavor. More sweet than bitter.
Feel – Very smooth with a nice finish.
Overall – A very nice balanced beer, and I enjoyed how it was different than The Younger.

2013 vintage.

A: Pours a hazy ruby color with a small bubbly head, just off-white in color. Not much retention, but a few bubbles last. Nice lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: Lots of citrus, rather sweet with a good amount of caramel and toffee. Faint alcohol presence, just letting you know that this is a big beer.

T: Much fruitier than the aroma, with some citrus, pineapple, grapefruit, and apricot. Plenty of malt mixed in, some caramel, and sugary sweetness.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation, certainly drinks thick.

O: Glad to have tried this beer. For a triple IPA, it was relatively balanced. Sure it is a little on the malty side with the caramel, toffee, and sugary sweetness, but it almost has to be.

On-tap at Big Time Brewery on February 7th, 2012. Poured into a snifter.

A: The beer pours a deep oranged color with an extremely thin head of foam. Very heavy lacing clung to the glass throughout.

S: Very strong, pungent floral and citrus hops permeating throughout the beer. There's a heavy amount of sweet caramel malt lingering in the background, but it's pretty much overwhelmed by the hops.

T: The taste is strong fruity hops (grapefruit, apricot, mango) that are followed up with a wallop of malt. Whiny has more caramel than I was expecting based on the 3 lbs of hops per barrel.

M: Incredibly smooth beer with a medium mouthfeel and very light carbonation. This a 9.1% ABV beer, but you'd never know it.

O: What a great way to celebrate the 2,300 batch produced by Big Time. Fantastic balance between the hops and the malt and the alcohol is pleasantly masked preventing any solvent-type flavors from overpowering the beer.

Poured on tap at Big Time, 2,300 batch so they put out a triple IPA poking fun at Pliny.

Pours a murky orange with a couple fingers white head. Good lacing.

Smell is hoppy yet balanced. Hop character is present, but not very strong.

Taste is luscious floral hoppiness. A bit bitter, but more citrusy and grapefruit. The best way I can describe it is a 90 minute IPA but without the soapiness that the continuous hopping seems to produce.

Very palatable, smooth and drinkable with a bit of a lingering bitterness.

Very solid beer.

Poured from a bottle (yay) into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a hazy, dark burnished copper amber with a thin head that dissipates to a film, leaving a thin ring around the glass and slippery lacing. Aroma of citrus, lightly floral hops and sweet malt. Flavor is hop forward, complex piney and citrus hops supported by a nice sweet, caramel malt body. Finishes with pungent hops that are less bitter than expected from the flavor, dark fruit; similar to a barley wine (but that could be the ABV talking). Medium to heavy, creamy body with decent carbonation despite the modest head. Very tasty and warming, although the robust flavors cover the ABV quite well. I like this a lot, being a big fan of hoppy IPAs with a substantial malt body. The name makes me laugh. Sadly, the Pliny it gently mocks will not be available in the Northwest any more. Let's hope Big Time is ready to fill the gap.
