I god ahold of this beer hoping for something along the lines of 1554.

I was not impressed by this beer. Actually, I was unimpressed by this beer.

The nose was boring and simple, and the taste was actually poor enough that I was unable to finish the bottle. I returned the rest of the 6-pack.

Perhaps improper storage or batch inconsistency led to some of what I experienced, but this is one beer that I don't plan to approach again.

Pours a dark ruby red color with golden amber edges and a half finger off white head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind.

Sweet malt aroma with subtle earthy hops.  Hints of rye, caramel and toffee as well as some hazelnut and grassy hops.  Kind of bland really.

Medium bodied with a crisp hop bite up front that lingers over the sweet malt notes into a slightly dry finish.  Spicy with subtle dryness.  Decently bitter but nicely balanced by sweet malt backbone that has hints of caramel, rye and toffee.

Review from 7/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a deep ruby amber with a thin tan head and light lacing. Brown ale aroma of toasted malt. Looks quite nice. Flavor is somewhat thin. Dark malt, hops, dark fruits, but all light flavors. Finishes dry and abruptly. Would be quite good with a bit more body and flavor.

On tap at Galway Arms on the ave in the U district. Appearance was pretty dark but not thick. Carbonation present, and a tiny head. I thought it was interesting that the head seemed to grow as time went on. There’s a nice lacing as well. Aroma was sweet and almost milky. Lot’s of fruit presence, both sweet and dark. Honey and caramel. Taste wasn’t at all what the aroma leads you to believe, it’s a bit bland and pretty heavy carbonation. It seemed a bit too bitter for my liking. Palate was decent. Pretty drinkable. Lots of carbonation, but there’s little lasting tastes. Overall its something I would have to be in the mood for. It’s not bad but it’s nothing great either. It’s like the girl you see, think she’s pretty and start to talk to her, and you realize there’s nothing about her that interests you besides her looks.

Presentation: 12 oz bottle poured into a pint.

Appearance: Pours a dark opaque, cola color. Pours with an average sized cream colored head that dissipates into a thick soapy lacing. Lacing clings well to the glass. If this were black it'd look like a stout.

Smell: Full of rich caramel malt, buttered biscuit & toasted malt.

Taste: dark roasted malt, buttery biscuit, caramel, a bit of chocolate & rasins. Floral and dark fruit notes sticking out like a thumb from hops.

Mouthfeel: Stout like sweetness, Low carbonation, low hop bitterness.

Drinkability: This has the feel of a well crafted beer and is sort of interesting how this falls under the amber ale category. It really has the chocolate roasted malt characteristics of a stout. Its a rich and complex beer sadly the flavors clash together making it a bit awkward of a brew. You may like it, I'm not so keen on it.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a dark ruby-brown with less than an inch of khaki colored head that dissipated semi-quickly and left moderate rings of lacing.

The aromas were typical, a sweet malt foundation that supported a nice hop scent. The taste followed along very closely to the aromas. A bit more of a hop tang than the aroma suggested. Surprisingly dry finish.

Body and drinkability were both as expected for the style. Overall, an average red ale, certainly worth trying if you see it about, perhaps worth having someone bring you some back from Seattle.

Bottle shared ajsdad.

Poured a clear brown color with a large frothy off-white head that was mostly lasted and had very good lacing. Good roasted malty and small hop aroma. Medium body with slick smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate well balanced smooth flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.

Good complex session brew.

12 ounce bottle acquired as an extra in a trade with SuzyGreenberg, thanks for the opportunity Ben, also drank tonight, poured into my Lost Coast pint glass, color is a dark brown with some darker red tint, big 1 1/2 soapy vanilla colored head that lasted over five minutes, not much retention though, aroma was roasted malts, Northwestern hops, mild vanilla, milk chocolate, caramel, and light sweetness, taste starts off sweet with some vanilla and light cocoa, caramel and other malts in the middle, finish can be dry at times but mostly remains sweet and has a weak aftertaste, does not change much as it warms, overall just a lot more malty than hoppy and I think its drinkability and feel suffer as a result of that, thin bodied, sweet, slightly chewy and dry, also watered down mouthfeel, too much carbonation, could not drink too much more of this and barely finished the bottle after giving a few sips to my dad, did not go down too easily, not a bad introduction to the Maritime Pacific brewery, have not many ambers this color before either, would drink again, worth trying

If you're in the mood for a Dunkles style beer then grab one of these and see what it's really supposed to taste like!

This is Maritime Pacific's version of a German dark beer. They've used ale rather than lager yeast but other than that it's pretty much right on for the style. And man is it good! Nightwatch is very dark red...about like a cola...and it produced a rocky, light tan head that stuck around. It has slightly sweet, delicious carmel malt flavors. The hops are present in perfect balance but malt is the main attraction in this very good beer.

If you like beers like Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel, Michelob Amber Bock or Henry Weinhard Dark Lager then seek out a Maritime Pacific Nightwatch. It'll be a real eye opener.

Poured into a Chalice. Minimal head and spotty lacing. Clear see-through dark brown. Nutty brown/amber tint colouring.

Sweet Chocoalte, caramel, burnt maltings, decent.

Tastes like singed caramel, with a good malty backbone.

Medium to light bodied dark, so not too bad, would prefer it to be a little heavier.

Drinks fine

A: On tap. Poured a rather heavy chocolate brown with creamy walnut head. Hints of amber tinting as it sat in the glass. The retention was decent and the lacing was moderate with a tanned coloring.

S: Hints of coffee with toasted chocolate aromas and caramel malts. Slight hops in the nose but overall this one has a smoked and burnt toffee quality.

T: Light roasted caramel and subtle pecan tastes. Reasonable sweet malt quality with just a dash of hops. Ripened dried fruit with a smoked mocha finish. No taste of alcohol.

M: Pretty close to medium bodied.

D: I really enjoyed this beer for lunch on a weekday afternoon. It was not exhausting in anyway. The type of beer you could easily have a few of at the pub but still has delicious, warming, and filling qualities.
