I saw a bomber at my local discount beverage market for a very reasonable price, so gave it a try. Poured into a standard pint glass, it has a nice ruby color and average tan head which dissipated quickly .

The smell is a slightly roasted camel.

Taste is sweet, but not extremely so. Caramel with just enough roasted malt and hops to balance, but lacks some complexity. Mouthfeel is ok.

Very drinkable for a double, would pair well with food, particularly cheese.

Thanks to Ashley for sharing this at Oneinchaway's tasting.

Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, dark fruit, and sugar aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet malt and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aromas and flavors for an American take on the style.

Grabbed a bottle at whole foods here #inthecouve...

- Super dark caramel, ruby-red, brown....quick fizz down to a swirls of very thin bubbles... Looks like a Scotch ale, or brown... slightly clear.. not cloudy, but can see through it...

- Fig, fruity character... plum... grain, sweetness... oats, light alcohol... sugars... brown sugar... light molasses..

- Interesting malty and estery brew.... grains, oats, wheat.. fig, plum.. prune... sugars... light bitterness.... smooth character... different.

- Light to medium bodied.... lightly creamy.... .. tart..

- Overall a very interesting brew.. drinkable... but just blah... not something I would probably buy again.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip.

Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with tons of cloudiness. Head is one finger of tan foam; personally, I like a little more head and apparent effervescence in my dubbels. Still, not a bad looking beer at all.

Smell: mild nutty, bready, yeasty aroma. The composition is alright but the intensity leaves quite a bit to be desired. While not bad at all, I like my dubbels to deliver a helluva lot more in this arena.

Taste: this beer is a slightly tart, yeasty affair. There is some cherry and plum flavor here, but it's not as dark and fruity as a lot of dubbels. All in all, it's not too bad, but it doesn't strike me as particularly genuine.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation. It doesn't blow me away, but it yields enough creaminess for me to be happy.

Drinkability: this is not a bad beer, but I think it falls short compared to a lot of other dubbels. I'm going to finish this bottle without complaint, but I won't seek this beer out again.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a clear brownish-amber with a finger of off-white head. Mild nutty caramel aroma with hints of spice and raisin.

Slightly low carbonation and a somewhat thin mouthfeel. Flavor of gentle toffee and biscuit up front with a bit of dark fruit, coriander, and earthy spice on the finish.

Some nice potential here, but the beer came across a little watered-down -- would have been very good with a little more body.

Appearance - This is a dark, beautiful brown in color with a modest head that nevertheless deposited come nice lacing on the inside of my chalice.

Smell - The herbal nature of this nose hit me first. After a bit I caught some candied smells and a hint of medicinal alcohol. The promised coriander is here in spades.

Taste - I liked smelling this beer more than drinking it. The coriander that I enjoyed at the nose was heavy-handed at the taste. The booze went from noticeable to offensive, and it takes a lot to get me offended at booze. There's a light woody character that I enjoyed but overall I thought the flavors were unbalanced.

Mouthfeel - This is a big medium-bodied with some righteous carbonation and a surprisingly bitter finish.

Drinkability - The individual components of this ale were enjoyable but taken together I thought they missed their mark.

Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark orange brown. Small fine off-white head that dissipated quickly. Aroma of sweet bready malt, dark fruit. Light flavors of caramel malt, light and dark fruit. Very light hop finish. Light to medium bodied. Rather subdued and not too exciting.

Bottle purchased at the brewpub.

A - Pours very dark brown and cloudy. Good carbonation coming up and a silky light brown head. Good thick lace

S - Rich dark fruit and strong yeast with some sweet spice.

T - Alot of the same with some fairly strong spice. Dark fruit, yeast, and strong spice. Not sweet in the sense a dubbel should be. After a while the spice peels back and more brown sugar and fruit flavours come through.

M - Strong carbonation, creamy medium to full body and a spicy/dry finish.

O/D - Way too spicy for me. For a Dubbel this doesn't seem to work at all. Yet after some time the fruit and sugar flavours came through more. But still, if I wasn't bored I would have poured this out pretty quick. Off for a dubbel.

Poured a deep chestnutt color with low carbonation and a very small dirty white head. Nose is belgian yeast with candy sugar, dark fruiits and light boze. Taste is fig, raisin, plum and candy sugar half way through but the beginning is pretty flat. I did find some blackberry, maybe even green apple and orange peel.I got soome booze and maybe even a grape juice/grape soda flavor on the end. Mouthfeel is booze, sticky and flat. Not appealing.

22 oz bottle from the Safeway near the Junction in West Seattle. poured into pint glass.

A: pours a little darker than expected, 1/4" inch creamy head, hella lacing, dark golden brown with ruby tint.

S: strong coriander and wheat, citrus and maple aroma.

T: figs, maple definitely prevalent - reminds me of a maple sweet bacon. coriander doesn't hide itself, either.

M: smooth, bright, fresh, no complaints in this department whatsoever. great, subtle aftertaste.

O: an odd little dubbel. Pike did a pretty good job, though...I suppose.

North Carolina

Nice to see Pike stuff making its way into North Carolina, and I had to pick a couple different ones up. Seattle is so great.

Head is a lightly toasted tan color, soapy and big-bubbled, holds well for a couple minutes before thinning to a soapy film. Leaves lots of dots of lace. Color is milk chocolate brown.

Aroma is predominantly herbal/spicy meets earthy/mineral. Faint shades of chocolate and grilled meats further back. Coriander is obviously kickin', so is the yeast.

Flavor is pretty heavy on the spice (coriander) and the malts have a charred character that I don't think works. They may not be charred grains at all, but something in here tastes burnt. Watery cola; mineral; cloves. Juicy dark fruits are here, but they're pushed down by everything else. Finishes burnt and dry.

Feel is on the thin side, although just creamy enough to save it, and some prickly carbonation injects a little life into it.

A bit rough. Definitely not on par with the best Belgian dubbels. Thin of body and uneven in flavor...I know Pike can do better, but this was still interesting and satisfying enough that it was worth buying.
