Quite an interesting and unexpected find here in Greensboro today.Poured into a large tulip glass a somewhat hazed burnt orange tinged golden with a large fluffy white crown that stuck like glue to the glass as it settled very slowly.Light yeasty spice in the nose along with some fruity esters, both are light but pleasant.Flavors are yeasty and lightly spiced with some medicinal hops thrwon in,not much funk to be had here wich really isn't true to style but that's fine with me.It's a little off in the style department but it's nice and well rounded, but like the other person who has reviewed this beer says it really seems like more of a tripel.

Number 1580 printed on the label if that means anything. Stumbled upon this beer totally by accident. No mention of it on the website. After I enjoyed this, went back to buy some more and they were all gone. Hope to run across this again.
Clear golden pour into Russian River stemmed glass.
Nice white foamy head.
Typical light somewhat astringent taste. Mild Belgian yeast flavors. Pleasant to the tongue. Aftertaste sweet.
And under $5 for the bomber!
What a steal. I can only hope I run into this again. I hope it isn't a limited brewing. I stand corrected if it isn't.

Review from notes.

A: Pours a hazy golden yellow with a 1.5 finger white head on top with pretty good retention and lacing around the glass. Settles to a small cap.

S: Nice aroma, rather fresh with some grassy hops along with some light fruit and peppery spice.

T: Surprisingly fruity, with a little bit of apple and pear, some more grassy hops, yeast and pepper.

M: Light to medium bodied with active carbonation. Very crisp and easy drinking.

O: Liked this beer quite a bit, would certainly get it again.

a much more hopped up version of a saison...but i like it. still very
earthy/grassy....wild. you'd think it was some off-hand, brilliant IPA from a po-dunk area of these wonderful states. erase that. brilliant. nearly world-class. would love to have this on tap

22oz. Bright orange/gold pour, thinner than expected white layer. Stuck to the glass a little. Effervescent throughout though.

Aroma, pine and grapefruit forward. A small amount if yeast, white pepper and ester.

Taste, more sweet yeast spice here. Healthy dose of tangerine and pineapple. Light grass and pine/citrus bitter cut the sweetness quickly. Finishes extremely dry, white pepper, pine and grapefruit.

Heavy side if light bodied, maybe could have had just a tad more carbonation to lighten it up a bit. Either that or the malt bill could be lowered slightly. Still drank well and was quite refreshing after mowing the lawn.

Didn't start out too great, but ended up being pretty nice.

Straight pour from a 22oz pry-off bottle to a tall Ommegang flute; I was made to understand when I purchased this that it was fresh-fresh in early July, so I don’t think it’s any more than about two months old or so.

Appearance (4.5): Four fingers of pale tan head rise off of the pour, composed of a mixture of coarse and merginue-like foam that caps a pale copper-golden body that’s mostly clear, with just a chill haze. This shows excellent retention and exceptional lacing, with cascading rings and legs of fat lace all around the glass, along with a crested cap of foam on the surface. I like my saisons a bit hazier, but holy shit this looks good.

Smell (4.0): Spicy, fruity, light caramel, warm bread, sweet biscuits, and slightly nutty . . . there’s some juicy citrus (mango, mostly), some warm spices (clove, mostly), some fresh grassiness, and a nice, warm, rich but not sugary at all mixture of fresh-baked rustic bread, light caramel icing, and biscuits. Some acidic citrus comes through, too.

Taste (4.0): Warm spices (light clove, some white and black pepper, light coriander), some nice nutty and slightly caramel-y malt with dry, rustic wheat bread notes as well; a mix of herbal, strongly grassy, citrus pith-y, and slight juicy citrus (but more like yellow grapefruit flesh). Good balance of yeast phenols and very grassy hops, moderate malt body keeping things anchored. Fruity esters hang out underneath (apples, some peach and light pear flavor). Lemony tartness, modest citrus peel astringency. A moderate funk kind of emerges from the mix of esters, phenols, and grassy hops in the finish, which hang on for a while. This is a bit of an oddball in some ways, despite not doing anything particularly untraditionally, and I dig it.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Full carbonation offers a modest prickle and a strong tingle with a nice foaming character as it goes down; the body is medium-weight pretty much on the nose, somewhat oily, and extremely dry in the finish thanks to those grassy hops. Very drinkable.

Overall (4.0): As a saison, this has a solid but not exceptional base; as a pale, hoppy beer, it trends toward a hoppy, Old World pilsner minus the characteristics of a lager; but as a whole, it comes together in an unexpectedly slightly funky manner that’s interesting and a nice departure from both the typical saison and the typical pale, hoppy beer. I think it helps that the hops have probably mellowed a bit from when this was fresh, too, because unless this was insanely dry-hopped whatever hops character is in it now would have been a bit harsh when fresh. Right now, this is a really good, highly enjoyable, hoppy saison—if you’re up for something that isn’t necessarily 100% on-style in either direction of the spectrum.
