look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: Pours a clear golden color with a frothy head that makes it look like a pilsener; plenty of splashy lacing lingers

Smell: Grassy, with herbaceous coriander tones and a hint of caramel

Taste: Very herbaceous, up front, with strong coriander tones melding into grassy bitterness; the two angular flavor profiles clash through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I kept going back and forth on this beer; first admiring the bold flavors and then becoming concerned by the lack of balance; ultimately, it is an interesting experiment that needs a bit more finesse to pull off

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a hazy, fairly opaque, golden-orange coloring with a ton of head on the pour. Seriously, as gentle as can be, and you end up with a massive, foamy, billowing, off-white head. Give it a minute, and it will settle out for you quite a bit, leaving a pretty intricate lacing along the glass. Aromas of citrus and herbs, with lemon zest, basil, grass, hibiscus, and subtle pepper, with some berry sweetness and farmhouse funk mixed in as well. Subtle, inviting nose. Flavors are spice forward, with nutmeg, basil, pepper, evergreen, and lemon grass all blending on a butter and caramel backbone, with a dose of funky farmhouse yeast character, some tart and sour notes, and a bit of hops bitterness at the tail end. Pretty balanced, and pretty layered. The beer is smooth and robust, but the flavor profile does provide some dry and almost astringent notes to clean things up a bit. The aftertaste has more of the citrus notes, with a steady herbal resonance lingering on. Smooth, slightly tart and dry finish, with a kick of the tart still there to keep your mouth watering a bit. Solid brew.

Picked this up for less that $5 at TW in Chantilly. Love the bottled-on date!

Appearance: a cloudy, honey color with an white(ish) head.

Smell: loads of malt leap out of the glass, followed by typical saison aromas: grain, yeast, a hint of hops.

Taste: similar to the smell with a biting medicinal tone; almost like someone dropped a cough drop into the bottle. Less yeasty and crisp than other saisons.

Mouthfeel: lots o' bubbles (i.e. heavy carbonation

Drinkability: Usually saisons are light, crisp, and refreshing. This example was a bit more work due to the medicinal quality; too off-putting in my opinion, considering the myriad options in the style.

a much more hopped up version of a saison...but i like it. still very
earthy/grassy....wild. you'd think it was some off-hand, brilliant IPA from a po-dunk area of these wonderful states. erase that. brilliant. nearly world-class. would love to have this on tap
