This beer pours a golden amber color with a finger of head that falls to ring the beer. The nose is really strange. The first thing that comes to mind is tomato, some leather and spiceyness. I hope the flavor is different. What I get in the flavor is odd. I get the peated flavor, but it tastes a bit like leather. There is a bit of bite in the finish, but overall I don't like the beer all that much. Not what I want from a Scotch. The feel is rather thin, and drinkability suffers from the odd notes I get in the flavor and nose. I would not recommend this beer.

Reddish brown color, medium white foamy head. Aroma is malty and slightly sweet. Slightly hopped, very malty. Scotch like maltyness. Nice balance. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is malty with nice smoky undertones.

Poured into a nonik pint glass, this beer is a wonderfully lovely reddish amber color... unfortunately, little head forms on top of it and there's no lacing. But the color is perfect. Pleasant malty aroma, toasted with a little nutty edge to it. The flavor is malty, but somewhat underwhelming. At this strength, I was hoping for more. Anyway, it's got a toasty, very lightly burnt caramel flavor. Bitterness is medium, so thankfully it's not too sweet. The body is a tad watery as well.

Fairly average.

Clear amber color. Off-white head that was quick to fade to a thin swirl. No lace.

Smells of dirt and moss with a little bit of caramel -- very earthy.

Tastes like Kool-Aid with a gentle peat and bitter hop infusion. Mild fizz here and there, the mouthfeel is heavy but stagnant.

Overall, a very weak Scotch ale but consequently very drinkable. Somewhere between a Scotch and an amber.

Ours cloudy brown with a slight cream head. No lace.

Some slight smoky malt, some fruit and caramel.

Not big like some of the style. Caramel, good toasty malt, some fruity sweetness, leading to some long lingering bitterness. I really want an alcohol punch here and get none. All of the other flavors work well, but this is a wee bit weak.

Medium to full bodied. It works.

An ok brew. Some flaws but tasty.

Nice bronze color. Admirable head going into the glass. Sweet, caramel aroma-sticky, buttery and toffee like. Malt all the way upfront flavor wise. A whisper of hops. Mellow spiciness that is somewhat unexpected though fits well. Lingering caramel sweetness. Hint of real scotch character as it settles in the back of the throat. Very solid body-the stickyness and touch of spice comes thru bodywise. Very well done US wee hevy. Nice low abv, for the US. Stays traditional to it's roots. No smoke in your face which is nice.

Appearance: Medium amber brown in color, with a touch of haze and a small white head.

Aroma: Earthy, fruit\y notes, no discernable hops, as expected, and a sweet, perfume note. The aroma seems less malty than typical for the style.

Taste: Mildly peaty and earthy from the start to finish, with a slight alcohol note. Finishes with a flourish of mild, but lingering earth and bitter chocolate notes.

Mouth feel: Smooth, but a bit thin, with very mild carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Very pleasant, although a bit understated, conveys a feeling of being light for the style.

Many thanks to Bill for generously sharing this uncommon Scotch Ale.

This is a wonderful, slightly different and smokey wee heavy-type beer.

Dark, slightly reddish golden amber, it has a smallish off-white head steadily shrinking to a foamy ring leaving little lace. It is a bit darker and redder than the Pike IPA.

Aroma is rich caramelised dark fruits, some dark toastiness.

Taste is lightly smokey up front with rich dried fruits, toasty grain/barley, light earthiness joining later. The toastiness, rich fruits, light earthiness and light smokey quality all carry through the finish and linger gently. It's slightly on the sweeter side. It is not very good with many foods, but alone or with Pike's macaroni & cheese made with it, it is simply wonderful.

Pours dark red with a sub-one-finger head, slightly off white. Smells of heavy, buttery scotch and molasses. Flavor follows with a mix of fruits and butterscotch, with a super smooth finish. Not much peaty or smokey flavor here, but I was Ok with that. A little slick, juicy, with medium carbonation. Was hungover when I had this, but was a pretty easy drinking scotch ale. Pike really impressed me on my Seattle visit.

This beer pours an amber color with a small head that goes away fast and doesn't leave any lacing on the glass. kmpitz2 described the aroma as tomato and spices and I totallly agree. The flavor was much the same. I didn't even detect any peated malt. Something really strange about this brew, not in a good way. I had to pour this one out.

Orangy copper, some fine sediment, a light tan cap with little retention but decent spotty lacing. The aroma is pretty solid in its power, toated and caramel malts, almonds and slight fruit. Lots of toasted caramel taste, a bit almond, interesting sweetness, slight spicy burn. I enjoyed how this tasted but not enough to get any more. Medium bodied, light fizz in the mouth. Smoothness that seems syrupy but is not. Decent middle but it fades to quickly on the finish. Chewy and mild spice meet the bitterness in a lingering after taste.

A - A finger and a half worth of tightly packed slightly creamy egg shell colored froth... Modest retention gives way to a slightly splotchy lace with a full collar... A light to medium caramel color with a very faint orange hue... Minimal amount of small sluggish carbonation bubbles can be seen rising along sides the glass...

S - The aroma is quite subdued... Golden raisins... Some candied sugars... Touches of caramel... Faint peat notes... Not bad, just very weak...

T - The nose was a perfect indicator of the taste... Raisins... Peat... Caramel... Toffee... Very subtle peat notes... A slightly medicinal finish... Well close, but not quite to "4" territory...

M - Medium bodied... Chewy and bit on the thick side... Slight carbonation... A bit sleek... A bit sticky...

D - An easy drinking Scotch Ale that is neither awe inspiring or off putting in any way... Simple and straight forward... Goes done rather easily... A bargain for the price... No complaints... Would gladly drink again, but not something I would highly recommend...

Bottle Inspection: Notes it’s Scottish and has 27 IBUS.

Aroma: Mild vegetal coriander and some smoke.

Appearance: Golden amber, much lighter than expected. Fair head that faded quickly.

Flavor: Mild overall taste. Very mellow and malty with just a few hints of peat.

Mouthfeel: Light body is surprising, but the low carbonation improves drinkability.

Overall Impression: A gentle lift of the kilt! I expected stronger flavors but this was dangerously drinkable.

Pike Kilt Lifter has a thick, cream-colored head, a murky, light brown appearance, some bubble streams, and a few lacing rings left behind. The aroma is of slightly fruity, sweet brown bread crust, and light brown sugar. Taste is of sweet & sour sauce, brown bread crust, light brown sugar, moderate hop bitterness, and toffee. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and a bit velvety, and Pike Kilt Lifter finishes semi-dry, decently refreshing, and rather rich. Overall, this is tasty and interesting.

Pours two fingers on a hazy dark straw colored body.
The aroma is fruity: apricot, apple and pear. A touch too ripe though.
The taste is ripe apricot, bitter grapefruit, with a sweet finish. Unbalanced.
The texture is heavy, a little sticky with moderate carbonation.
This one never gets it all together at the same time. Individual elements were okay, but...

Standard bomber poured into a pint glass. This particular Kilt Lifter shows a lightly hazed orange amber with a thin cap of foam. Light retention follows.

Nose of light caramel and a hint of background hops. Some sour notes emanate through the fog and come as a bit of a surprise, blending back in to the caramel malts and slightly faded hop notes.

Taste is somewhat rich for the delivery yet quite subdued overall for the style. Light bodied and a bit dry and chalky on the finish. A Scottish Ale perhaps though surely not a Wee Heavy, this beer is light in body even for an Amber Ale, and with a sourness and wine like characteristic that places it outside any true categorization.

Yet, having enjoyed this beer, I wonder if another would be the same?? Carbonation becomes light in the end yet is somehow befitting of the pour. Hmmm...

Note: O.G. 1.064 with 27 IBU's 'Scotch Style Ruby Ale' with no date code...
