nice caramel color, some carbonation and bubbles rising to the top. nothing really there in the smell (maybe a cereal/corn kind of aroma) and the taste is rather generic, but easy-going and sessionable. slight hop bitterness one-ups the malts but my kilt isn't lifting.
overall, a very general kind of brew. easy to drink with a decent abv, but like the others from this brewery, not terribly memorable. probably very nice fresh out of the tap at the brewery...

Pours a nice 1 1/2 finger headw ith good retention that stays for a while down the glass. Nice ruby/brown cloudy color.

Smell is of toffee and toasted malts. A little bit of apple and plum fruitiness lie underneath.

Toated malts with tofee are first noticed with a sort of sweet green apple undertone that is only noticeable when paying close attention. This is finished with a dry hop bitterness and a green apple sweetness aftertaste. I had a 3.5-4.0 on nose and taste, but I will take points on taste as the beer is slightly astringent from the alcohol with a little bit of dry tannins producing very mild off flavors.

The sweetness of the apple really sticks to the palate. The mouthfeel is a dry and I feel that the beer gets slightly cloying because of this.

I like this beer and I think it is well done. I think the apple sweetness may bother some, but I like it. I think it mixes well with the malts and provides for a sessionable beer.

on-tap at pike pub in seattle.

pours a dark amber with a red tint, with little to no head and some lacing.

smells of some berry, malt, sweet, caramel, butterscotch, some hops, some nuts.

taste oily, flat, has a sweet start then ends bitter, malt, some roasted nuts, some butterscotch, becomes more bitter as it warms.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with beertunes, poured a cloudy, amber, almost light chestnut in color, with a very soapy looking off white head, about 1 finger in thickness. Receded very quickly to negligible lacing.

Smell was fairly non-descript. A little cold at first, I got some caramel sweetness. Much later, near the bottom of the glass, warmth brought out some nuttiness, with maybe a hint of hay.

Taste was better than the nose. The caramel and nuttiness was a little more pronounced especially as it warmed. Overall though, the flavors didn't seem to come off quite as heavy as I would have expected for the style. Maybe I just need to sample a few more from this style.

Mouthfeel was fairly average, not bad, not outstanding. Smooth, with just a little alcohol warmth on the tongue.

Drinkability is not bad. I certainly wouldn't turn this down, and wouldn't be upset to find it in another trade box.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance- Pours up a fair amount of head which looks to have okay retention. The head is almost pure cotton white (it has the slightest hint of beige) while the body is a medium to dark amber that appears medium in the light. Good amount of lacing which tends toward sheeting.

Nose- Very low key and subtle but not in a good way. I get a little bit of caramel, brown sugar, and brown bread from the bottle but almost nothing from the glass. A tiny bit of caramel, slight toastiness. This leads me to believe that this is going to be a rather weak scotch ale. Shows some cereal and grain after swirling. Even a little bit of cornflakes.

Taste- Reflective of the aroma but with a bit more presence. Caramel, slight oak and wood bitterness with notes of molasses and brown sugar. Some brown sugar. Light oak on the finish. A bit thin and watery. No flaws but it is pretty boring at the moment. Some raisins on the front of the flavor profile. Just above average. It is representative of the style; it's simply a weak representation. Shows a little more presence as it opens up. Grain and cereal way in the background.

Mouthfeel- A little below medium bodied with an appropriate amount of carbonation. Slight creaminess.

Drinkability- Pretty easygoing with enough flavor notes to keep it from being boring. Still pretty average.

Overall- Above average. I would give it a try if you aren't expecting a very heavy scotch ale. Fairly accessible for the style- could be good for drinkers new to it.

Reviewed 7/24/2009 (bottle):

Cloudy brown color body, small off-white head, quickly diminishing. Malty sweet aroma, syrupy. Earthy. English malty taste, biscuity. Sweet, but not syrupy. Scotchy taste, maybe butterscotch. Not bad, not too headache inducing.

This is a mild and washed out version of the style.

Pours amber with a disappointing head. The aroma is sweet, a little peaty, with an unfortunate bite of elastic. The flavor is sweet, slight, and malty with a band-aid finish that is not appealing. The mouthfeel is prickly to an unpleasant degree.

Presentation: 12 oz longneck bottle. Best by date notched on the side.

Appearance: Pours brownish orange with a good thick head. Decent retention.

Smell: Lots of malt sweetness. There is also a roasted smokey flavor to it - reminds me of the dimly lit Pike Pub!

Taste: Very smooth and creamy. Lots of sweet malt, and then a bit of hops at the end to balance it out.

Overall impression: Dangerously drinkable. High ABV and great drinkability could be a very dangerous combination in this one. Wish I could get it regularly here in Colorado.

I poured this beer in to a pint tumbler. It has a copper/brown color and is quite clear. The head was moderate, off-white and bubbly, but dissipated quickly to a thin white film, with some lacing.

The beer has a faint smell and is malty. The smell is generally unremarkable.

The taste is nice, smoky and malty with a slightly bitter hop finish. The after taste is short lived but pleasant.

I enjoyed this beer. It is light, tasty and very drinkable. I’d love to stop by the Pike Pub & Brewery and try one on tap some time.

Drank the shit out of this beer my first and second year of college.

Pours an unusually light color for the style with a peachy brown orange color and totally clear. A stark white head retains well and leaves pretty good lacing.

Nose has a rock candy like, crisp malty sweetness that brings back memories. A good bit of caramel, but no strong smoke or peat is present.

Ah, there it is. A ridiculously creamy flavor is complimented by slight smokiness and a good peaty profile. I didn't find this in the nose, but it is quite clear in the taste. Despite the lighter color of this beer (stylewise) its actually got a very authentic malt profile. Not much of a hop profile, as is expected for the style. The finish is nice and smooth, crazy creamy, and the aftertaste lingers on with caramely malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel is just about ideal. Viscous, but not overly so, and certainly not cloying.

Drinkability is pretty strong as this one is not exactly high on the abv scale as far as the style is concerned.

Overall, this is simply put, a solid and sessionable scotch ale that is packed with style accurate flavor. As common as it may be, it is solid. The color really throws one off going into it, but as soon as that signature scotch ale flavor makes its way in, there is no question what style is in the glass. This is definitely the best readily available scotch ale in a decent priced sixer that ive had. I was afraid that i only loved it becuase i drank it so much before my palate really matured and i would hate it now, (like their IPA) but this is a solid offering from pike. Nice scotch ale.

Pours a light amber in color with a light head that reduces to a thin layer in my glass.

Nice aroma of caramelized malt: caramel, bread.

Taste is OK. A hint of smoky peat mixes with some off-putting astringent notes. Not very sweet.

Solid body with a lot of carbonation.

Overall this is just an average beer. It's my first from Pike and I'm disappointed.

On tap at Pike brewery. Pours dark red hue with a white head and lively carbonation. Aroma is of cherry and apple juice. Light to medium, crisp body. Good balance of caramel malt, ripe fruit and earthy hops fill the mouth. I don’t think this ale can lift a kilt.

12oz longneck.
A) Pours with a Finger thick head, tight and creamy. Clear body amber in color with active upward carbonation.
S) Toffee. A slight citrus aroma - lemon? Toasty.
T) Nutty. Toffee sweetness mixed with a buttery toast flavor, rather pleasant. Flavor bold up front but tampers off midway through finishing with a subtle toast grain and notice hop bite.
M) Smooth and creamy. Medium body but on the lighter side. A bit of an alcohol effervescence.
D) A nice Scottish ale. I'd drink another.

Poured into an English pint glass at about 45 degrees.

Appearance: A deep amber with a light copper hue. There was a one finger that dropped to a quarter inch ring whit ring. There is a lot of carbonation in the glass. The clarity of the beer is clear.

Nose: A nice roasted malt with caramel, earthiness, and fruity esters.

Taste: A nice roasted malt with caramelize flavor, there is some earthiness, some diacetyl and some peatiness.

Overall: The mouth feel is slight carbonate with a dryness. The finish has a hint of bitterness. The beer is overall just okay. There wasn't anything that stood out to make this beer pop.

Had a pint at TK Irish Pub. Brownish amber hazy in color. Small creamy head. Pretty malty and mildly hopped. Ever so slightly syrup feel. Good flavor. Alcohol takes effect in this one quickly which is a little suprising at 6.50%. I like this beer, but I'm unsure about the style it's under. I found it more comparable to something like Fat Tire or even Alaskan Amber. Anyways, enjoyed it and will have again.
