2011 vintage, aged gracefully. Still potent but smooth.

Almost 2 years ago I found a bottle of 2009 Old Bawdy on the shelf at a local store. It was sticky and dusty, clearly it had been lost at the back of a shelf for a long time, and someone had finally pulled it forward. I snatched it up, and left it to age further until this past weekend. I was a little worried, it was either going to be glorious or god awful. I am happy to report that there result was indeed GLORIOUS!!!! So smooth with nice notes of toffee, still very well carbonated, and let me tell you it definitely kicked my mellow beer session into high gear! So glad I found it and waited on it, highly recommend aging this bad boy!!!

Pours a copper red body with minor head and lace patches. Aroma is mostly malty with touches of dark fruit and booze. This beer has a heavy body, not syrupy but some thickness to it, slow sipper, booze is evident throughout beer and adds a little heat on the backend. More boozy and dark fruity (raisins, figs) than hops or sweet notes poking out but they do. Balance is in this beer for most part as alcohol or dark fruit notes don't kill everything else. Not most flavorful or complex barleywine but pretty good.

Alright, fine, I've had this more than enough times over the years when my boat has pulled into Seattle, so here goes.
This thing, yeah, pour it in a chalice, a snifter, a pint glass, a tulip, whatever you damn well please, ah yeah, man, you'll always get the same damn results.
Here's the rest.
The appearance was a fairly decent dark brown close to black colored body. Lacing was there... slightly.
The smell was actually quite hoppy, oh yeah, the one I'm currently having is a 2013 so for the record for some odd reason the hops actually hold up in this thing, don't ask me why 'cause I have no freakin' clue.
The taste was actually quite hoppy and yet sweet with a nice figgy maybe perhaps antiquated dried out fruitiness to gloss over.
The mouthfeel was extremely dry, holy moley, was this ever dry. Are American Barleywines supposed to be this dry? Ah, shit, well, excuse me for not knowing any better and basically just speaking my mind.
Overall, for the most part, I think I like this beer, its just really dry and maybe makes me put a slight/perhaps nightcap on my night. Oh well, I guess its good. Cheers y'all.

Picked up a 2013 edition bomber in late March from Total Wine for $9.99. Bottled on day 354.

Beer poured amber-orange with a decent white head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is sweet and hoppy, dark fruits, a classic barleywine nose.

Taste is dark fruits, big malt backbone that is sweet but not cloying, generous amount of citrus and pine to balance the brew out nicely.

Mouthfeel is full and viscous.

Overall this is a very nice brew, true to the style, very delicious and satisfying. Makes for a nice sipper on a 105 degree day in the Sonoran desert!

22oz (2012) into a tulip. Pours a murky amber w/ a 1-finger khaki head.

Aroma is herbal and floral NW hops, caramel and toffee. Pretty straightforward, and maybe a tad boring.

Taste is more complex than the aroma. Lots of nice floral hops intermingled with rich caramel malt. There's a nice balance here where each element complements the other really well.

Mouthfeel is about right, medium to heavy with a lingering, mildly bitter aftertaste, just a touch of warming alcohol numbs the palate.

Overall a pretty decent, middle-of-the-road barleywine. Pike rarely makes an outstanding or horrible beer. Just reasonably faithful interpretations of a variety of styles. I'd drink this again.
