This stout is pretty damn strong for a 7%.

Solid malt, hints of oak and maybe even licorice, with bitterness for days. Now, if you're not opposed to bitterness, then you might enjoy this beer. But I like a good balance, and if I wanted a beer thats all these notes, I know one that does them all and better...if I can afford the higher cost. So XXX does have a reasonable price going for it.

So drink at your own discretion.

Poured into New Belgium globe glass. Appearance is black, opaque, and viscous with a velvety layer of brown head which retains nicely. The nose starts with deep roasted malts with a hint of smokiness, this is paired with molasses and fig. The taste is roasty and dry up front and develops a nice hop bitterness towards the finish. Almost no sweetness which is a surprise to me considering how malty it is. Mouthfeel is thinner than the appearance suggests, but is appropriate for the gravity of this beer. Overall, this is a nice full flavored stout with a bit of unique character. It leans towards the dry side with almost no sweetness which is unlike most stouts.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with an impressive 2 finger dense tan head with great retention, that reduces to a thick cap that lasts. Some nice thick soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, black coffee, roasted malt, pine, toasted biscuit, herbal, citrus rind, and earthy hops. Very nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, espresso, pine, grapefruit, roasted malt, toast, herbal, char, and earthy hops. Good sized roasted coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, espresso, pine, charred malt, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of roasted and hoppy flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a nice creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden with only a warming noticed after the finish. Quite smooth to drink, but is still a bit of a sipper. Overall this is a really excellent export stout! Great flavor balance with hoppiness; and quite smooth to sip on, with big robust flavors.

22oz bottle poured into a pair of large snifters

Pours tarry black, with sludgy sediment at the bottom, small quantity of light brown head, medium amount of visible carbonation. Smell is rich and chocolatey and fairly sweet and yeasty.

Taste is sweet, chocolatey bitterness, it's really nice.

Mouthfeel is a nice slightly gritty texture. Overall, very pleasing beer.

Poured from 22 oz bottle into a Half Acre tulip.

A- pours pitch black with a 2" dark cola head. Leaves rings of lacing on the glass.

S- chocolate, roasted malts, and pine.

T- bitter dark chocolate, roasted ,alts with just a touch of char. Has a nice pine bitterness at the finish.

M- medium body and carbonation. Finishes a little dry but drinks pretty well.

O- very good stout as far as regular stouts go. Nothing crazy or eccentric about this beer just a stout with good flavor and aroma. Would drink this again if I ever get another chance.

It is a black pour with a 2 finger head of tan foam and leaves some nice lacing.

It smells very roasty with a bitterness from both the roast and I believe a dark chocolate like bitterness. Nice if a bit mild.

Lots of roasted malt in the taste and it does have notes of dark chocolate, a bit of coffee, and some light sweet malt hidden pretty well, as it should be, considering the style.

It's been many years since I've had this brew(in 12oz bottles); I think it's very cool that XXX still hits the spot for me when I've tried soooo many Stouts before I got to try it again.

It's a smooth drop, mouthfeel wise....close to if not full bodied and a lightish amount of carbonation.

Yeah, I reckon Pike made and continues to make a fine Foreign Extra Stout. Good on them.

22 OZ bottle with no date.

A- Poured into a pint glass leaving a one inch tan head that disappeared quickly. This stuff is like a black hole in a glass, totally opaque and almost pure black.

S-Malty, burnt toast and coffee.

T- Taste is one dimensional, some bittter roasted malt up front, and then more burnt tasting bitterness at the finish and maybe some licorice.

M- Mouthfeel doesn't match the pour which was thick looking and viscous; a bit thin for something called extra stout. It leaves a bitter chalky sensation at the end that lingers.

Nothing off about this beer, it is a vision of stout that seems focused on bitterness and color.
