S - Pint glass poured from the bar tap at Pike Street Brewing in Seattle, WA
A - Pours a very dark reddish brown with less than a finger light brown head that doesn't last, other than a nice rim around the glass.
S - Dark roasted malts with some really nice unsweetened chocolate notes and definitely some burnt coffee in there as well. Almost has a soy sauce characteristic to it and definitely sweet smelling overall.
T- Just like the aroma: roasted burnt malts and coffee up front and finishes with unsweetened dark chocolate. Also in the aftertaste you get hit with loads of smoke and coffee like flavors. Really surprising for a regular stout.
M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice smooth finish.
O - Very smooth and enjoyable stout, alive with flavor.

22-oz bomber to tulip. Traded for at Bottleworks in Seattle. Consumed 7-12-2013. Unsure of bottling date.
Very dark chestnut brown. 1-finger dark tan head. Decent alcohol legs. 1/2-finger collar lingers. The appearance anticipates the smell and taste. Very strong roasted malts at first sniff, reminiscent of coffee. Vigorous swirl opens up very faint licorice and fruit.
Very harsh roasted (burnt) bitterness, with a hop bite, at first quaff. Dark brown bread sweetness on the aftertaste. The roast bitterness continues to predominate as the beer warms, but it is less potent. This may explain the sweet, creamy mouthfeel. This one improves with time.

Pike XXX Stout has a thin-to-medium tan head and a very dark brown, almost black appearance, but with visible bubble streams, upon close inspection. Lacing is scant. The aroma is of heavily-roasted barley malt, dark brown bread crust, and sweetness. Flavor is of deep, dark, astringent, roasted barley malt, a good amount of bitterness, sweetness, and some chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Pike XXX Stout finishes mostly wet, heavy, sweet, and rich. This is a sipper. Overall, I highly recommend this one!

Pike Pub & Brewery - Pike Street XXX Stout
Acquired via trade, somehow one of my first Washington brews, will need to fix that ASAP since they have the best hops in the country!
Look - Pours an oily (not jet) black with a huge foamy mocha head. Lots of sticky lacing, good retention.
Smell - Roasted malt, coffee, piney hops, cola, dark chocolate, molasses, and some fruit (berries, dates, figs).
Taste - On the thinner side, the fruits hit first, hops are there as well, then chocolate and finally roasted coffee.
Mouthfeel - Pine hops surprisingly bitter feel (it is 65 IBU so I guess not that surprising) sits on the palate and the roasted malts and coffee on the middle. Rich medium/heavy body with a dry finish. Great drinkability.
Overall - Solid brew all the way around, the hops add character and uniqueness that made me have to respect it (that and I enjoyed it). Recommend for sure.
