bomber into a tulip.

dark black pour with a slowly developing inch and a half thick beige head. smells of burnt malts...coffee and chocolate. taste is extremely malt forward and rich. tons of chocolate followed by coffee on the finish. slight smoke, slight charred flavor.big body for the abv, ill call it full. rich mouthfeel, this beers best characteristic.

overall very enjoyable. recommended.

22oz bomber into a pint shaker.

A: Pours a fairly opaque and dense looking black with tan head that retains well and laces nicely.

S: Fairly big licorice presence...chocolate, hints of soy and pitted cherry...sweet notes of black patent malt and dark caramel....roast and char and burnt coffee.

T: Cherry, licorice, molasses, soy, hints of smoke and chocolate...star anise...big malt body, some char, hints of coffee...dark caramel...lots of roast.

MF: Fairly viscous and sticky, fuller bodied with just a slight twinge of alcohol.

O: This one took me by surprise, I like it a lot. Not a one-hit-wonder, lots of different aspects to this stout.

Black as night with a good tannish-brown head and good lacing.

Aroma is roasty and a little burnt with nice coffee and chocolate notes.

Flavor follows through with the nose, maybe with a touche of anise (but it’s subtle). The chocolate and coffee are a bit more pronounced, leaving a slightly cappuccino effect for the imbiber.

Body is full, thick, rich, and leaves a wonderful slightly roasted, slightly burnt aftertaste that I really enjoy in a stout.

Definitely recommended. I’ll for sure buy this one again.

Re-review, December 2013: This is still one of my favorite export stouts, or any stout really. It's kind of like the best of both worlds between an imperial stout and a regular stout (pick your variety, dry/Irish, oatmeal, or American). I may have to try cloning it. I love the bold dark roast flavors, the slight touch of burnt (a good flavor for me in the right quantities), and the touch of espresso coffee and dark semi-sweet baker's chocolate. I'm not sure I detect anise this time around, but I'll leave the original review in place for posterity. Second time around I still rate this one very high. In fact this isn't my second time having it, just my second time posting a review. One of pike's most tasty regulars.

I saw this beer at Total Wine and it was on sale for $4.99. I have never noticed this before, but for $5 I decided to take a chance. I am glad I did.

Pours from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint glass a pitch black color and is topped with a rather dark, mocha cappuccino colored head of about two fingers in size. There is plenty of lacing and the retention is outstanding.

The aroma is filled with plums and raisins, even blueberries, dark chocolate, light coffee notes, toffee, slight chalkiness. Really nice.

Great flavor on this one. Slightly fruity right at the start but some hop bitterness sneaks up toward the end. There is a bit of astringency but I have found this is standard in the style. Chalky and dry, pithy, almost like aspirin chalky. Tobacco, raisins, piney resins, really nice.

A wonderful beer, especially for the price. I cant remember a beer that tasted this good for the value. I will certainly purchase more of these. A perfect beer in anticipation of Thanksgiving tomorrow and the impending cool front dropping down to South Florida.
