Pike has moved up (literally) from its original setting under the Pike Place Market to its present digs at the Market's perimeter on 1st Ave. To find it, look for the Pike sign and step inside a shopping corridor. The brewpub is one flight down and may be accessed by stairs or elevator.
Many, if not most breweries exhibit some sort of breweriana on the walls of their pub. But Pike showcases a museum-like display of more bottles, posters, and beer related materials than any brewery in the northwest. Personally, I find this display fascinating, especially the older, historic stuff. Most people go to a pub to talk; here you can walk and gawk. Touristy? Perhaps. But the place is dazzling and classy in my view, and it's quite apparent that the Finkels spent a lot of energy and cash on the collection. Enjoy it.
After absorbing the visual milieu, you may order a beer at one of three bars. Though often the main bar is the only one operating, the multi-level, slanted, stepped, and pocketed floorplan provides an odd array of seating arrangements and party schemes amid steel and copper brew kettles and an exposed atrium. Pike serves nine or so standards, mostly of Anglo-Celtic and American designs and mid- to upper quality. Their bottled beer is perhaps preferable to their draught though some seasonals are not bottled. Pike's simpler recipes with their immaculate filtration and clean lines work best, including the IPA, Naughty Nellie Golden, and the Kilt Lifter Scotch. The food menu is ambitious and laden with seafood. Service is entirely professional.
Pike's central location in the heart of downtown assures a steady influx of scenesters and party people. But the warmth and congeniality inherent to brewpub culture assures a relaxed vibe almost in spite of its cosmopolitan clime. Just be advised that although the neighborhood is as safe as in any American city, drug activity in the area is quite notorious. So keep alert.
