The pour is a pale golden color with only a slight haze. Starts off with lots of wheat aroma and sweet malt/bread. After that, the smoke really comes through and there is a subtle lemony tartness. The flavor is just off. It’s quite smokey but also very watery. Might have a little bit of saltiness to it as well. Just a strange beer.

From: The Andersons, Columbus, OH
Date: None on bottle
Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass

Adequate in flavor (not tart or smoky enough), easy drinking, this could easily be a sessionable style, but at $8 for a 17oz bottle, it is a once-and-done (and still slightly annoyed at the price point). As an available introduction to the style, this has led me to wonder what other Gratzer beers may be like, but I can't see myself returning to this particular one.

Pours a 1.5cm tall head of fairly clean, white-colored foam, made up of small and medium-sized bubbles, which fades to a thin cap of lace atop the body in slightly over one minute. Lacing is modest, a few medium-sized blotches cling to the sides of the glass. The beer's body is a golden orange color, with light bringing out pale golden yellow hues. Carbonation is visible through the hazy (60-70% opaque) body, fairly high in number and activity.

Aroma is a mix of tangy, mildly tart malt courtesy of Lactobacillus, mild smokiness from the beechwood-smoked wheat malt, and a basic grain-breadiness from the base barley and wheat malts. Not bad, but not nearly as tart, smoky, or complex as I thought this could be.

The smoke and tartness are quite mild, making this an easy introduction to either smoked or soured beers, the maltiness smoothing out the flavor profile into familiar ale-like territory. Front of palate picks up slightly bread-like malt characters with mild smoke and tart-tanginess. Mid-palate is of lightly smoked malt, with faint tartness and tanginess, atop a slightly sweet and bread-like pale barley and wheat malt base. Back of palate picks up more notable tartness and tanginess, though still quite modest, along with some pale malt sweetness, virtually no smoke. Aftertaste of very mild tanginess and a touch of smoke, mild and clean bitterness, and slight malt characters.

Beer is of medium-light body, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, resulting in a smooth, slightly foamy, slightly watery mouthfeel. Closes dry, with little stickiness remaining on the palate or lips.

Bottle Appearance: Transparent, gold with minimal white head Aroma: Smoke, honey Taste: Very subdued; slight smoke, very minimal sourness, light honey Palate: Very smooth, light body. Slight, cleansing aftertaste Overall: Very subtle flavors; had a hard time discerning the different flavors, picking up the smoke, etc. Still a good, easy drinking beer.

Served from tap into a sampler imperial pint. Poured a hazy golden light yellow with a two finger white head that subsided to a half finger slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, tart, subtle smoke, sour, wheat, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, wheat, smoke, and subtle fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly decent brew. I really don't know what this brew was trying to be if I am completely honest here. It looked like a Berliner and the smoke gave me the idea that maybe it was a smoked Berliner. However, something on the flavor was just offputting here. While there wasn't very much going on with it all of it just seemed to clash on your tongue with no regard for safety. The wheat on this one was definitely overpowering the entire thing including the smoke which I found hard to believe. Not sure if I would have this one again given other options, but worth trying at least once I suppose.

a - poured a one finger thick bubbly light tan head into a tulip glass that left nice lacing which settled into a thin ring throughout. the body was a bright orange-amber color.
s - wheat with a light peaty aroma.
t - a light tartness such as green apples.
m - crisp and prickly.
o - good smoked beer that had a lot of complexity though i would have liked some more smoked aromas.

500 ml, picked up at Charkeston Beer Exchange.
Slightly orangey gold pour, finger of off white.

Aroma,  malt, grain, hay.  Little lemon/lemon zest.

Faintly sour, faintly smokey.  Lemon zest again, then tea.  A little woody charcoal.

Light and pretty thin.  Could drink a ton of this though.  Some flavor is reminiscent of German Macro,  but it is an interesting little brew.

500 ml bottle. Pours hazy-orange with a long lasting, tall, white head and lively carbonation. Nose is of barnyard yeast, wheat malt hints of noble hops and smoke. Body is medium and tangy. Taste is sour, yeasty, wheat malt, smoked wood and hints of hops. Finish is long and sour. Interesting, refreshing thirst quencher.

Pours a deep thick yellow, with white topping foam head. Mild cheese and yeast aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. Takes getting used to, mostly getting yeast, not that smokey, pleasant and complex with some bitterness and mild sourness, something I can sip over the course of a night.Good with cheese.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A real nice creamy foamy head, white and meringue billows up off the pour. Four fingers deep and very whipped up, and bright eggshell white. Body is a bit hazy with a amber orange and light looking carbonation.

Nose has a light malt sense, faint wood chips, and light smoke. A yeast sweetness, and a bit of caramel as well behind this. So far so good, inviting to me.

Very light palate, quite a bit watery and fleeting. However, there's a nice light toasty grain to this with a nice smoke quality. Light warming and coating on the palate for feel, just very fleeting. Some little sweetness comes off with hints of apple like finish, and bakery freshness, and even apple tart also. Really interesting...

An interesting smokey session like beer. Not bad, I could have this again, kind of fun, really would like to have this with food.

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass.

A: Golden. Mild haze. Fast bubble streams. Fine bubbled head retains at a quarter inch. Lacing sticks in a thin sheet. More lager-like in appearance than anything.

S: Tart and fruity with scents of green apple skin and white grape must. Slight steely acidity. Wheats. Hop oils with mild floral notes. Subtle woody and jerky-like smoke.

T: Toasty, coarse wheat, mildly nutty. Jerky and woody smoke has a surprisingly soft touch. Tart and fruity with a mild acidity that cuts through everything on the mid palate and beyond. Floral and oily hops. Apple blossom. Steely. Fading tartness with traces of smoke on the finish.

M: Light bodied with a frothy wheat texture that gets flattened by the acidity. Semi-aggressive carbonation reinforces the cleansing affect that the acidity brings.

O: On paper this is perhaps the most ridiculous combination of flavors I've ever heard. In execution it works about as well as it could though. The balance is on point and it's subtle where it needs to be (which is pretty much everywhere). It's actually a pretty decent brew, all things considered. An interesting slice of history to be sure, but I don't expect this to ever take off as a style.
