Poured (from a 750 from the brewpub) into my new tired hands tulip (Teku) and it looks sweet. Darker colored but very clear with medium head that settles while leaving some lacing.
Nice sweet spicy tripel aroma. The hints of hops go towards a herbal grassy kind - seem more European than American style.
Hops are certainly in the taste. An immediate hit of bitterness, more grainy malt character and an upfront hop flavor and again with a prominent and lingering bitterness that trails off in a good long while. The foundational tripel shows but it is really background for the hop explosion - and the grainy/nutty character that I taste could also be a hop flavor. I still wonder if this more of an European hop for the flavor too, as it is not fruity or citrus, but has some pleasing flavors. As it opens up it sweetens a bit and I like it.
Seems not quite as clean as others of same style which takes away from the body a bit. I think the type of bittering hop seems bring this on. It is lighter body and the carbonating is nicely done.
The darker color (truly amber) belies the heavier hops and drink that this is, esp. for those looking for the lighter type of Belgian IPA. This is an unique take on style, that has taken some adjustment, but it's growing on me. That's the fun of this hobby
