Tasting notes: Big sweet smoked bacon on the nose, along with a light caramel/vanilla note. The palate is more bold. The smoke is salient, recalling a little wood char and leather, but there is a cola-like sweet current that is almost as strong, along with a phenolic earthiness. Hard to say whether this latter aspect is yeast or smoked malt. I'm guessing that its mostly the smoke. Medicinal phenols really stand out in the flinty dry finish. A "bourbon-tonka infusion" is mentioned on the label; perhaps this is where the cola note originates. Tonka beans? Alright then. Like juniper in their dark ale offering, these guys seem to like chucking in random exotic spices, to unclear effect. Coating, oily, nigh-syrupy mouthfeel, another interesting feature of a brew that is somewhat ... Schizophrenic, to use an outmoded and inappropriate definition of the term. Its got an identity crisis. I think the phenols are too much, as is the cola-like element. YMMV.

Bit of smoke, caramel, cola, dirty hops. Like a smokey marzen.

Pours a nice dark btown with a ruby hue, thumb of head, solid retention and sporadic lacing. Smoke on the nose, musty peat and burnt sugar. Nicely balanced caramel malts, peaty smoked malts, and leafy green hop notes. Medium bodied, smooth and wet. A delicious offering that's very well balanced and gives you enough smoke while still making it very enjoyable. Top notch and a brewery that is definitely on my radar now.

Appearance - Pours a chestnut brown with two fingers of foamy cream coloured head.

Smell - smoked malts, bacon, charred wood aromas, vanilla bean, leathery aromas.

Taste - smoked caramel malts upfront followed by the bacon. The charred wood and leathery aromas and hint of vanilla bean help to round out the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a lingering peatiness from the smoked malts.

Overall - A pleasant rauchbier from Dandy. The flavours are on point for the style. The only criticism on this is that it is smoked malts upfront then it loses its luster. Nonetheless, a worthy brew from this up and coming brewery.

650ml bottle - this was apparently brewed for a so-called prominent Calgary citizen's own personal enjoyment, but then they had to go and share it with the rest of us - how nice.

This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some collapsing layer cake lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of well-smoked, and certainly meaty caramel malt, cola syrup, a touch of cold, charred wood, tanned leather, a hint of coffee left and forgotten, and a twinge of phenolic medicinal notes. The taste is much lighter in the fleshy BBQ smoke department, the base caramel malt able to show off its rounded sweetness a whole lot better, as the cola earthiness grows stale, the coffee gets a fresh batch, and those medical lozenge essences fade away, thankfully.

The bubbles are fairly benign in their plain, unassuming frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and way more smooth than my nose might have originally prognosticated, with a wee airy creaminess arising as it warms. It finishes on the sweet side, weirdly, the meaty smoke having almost thoroughly dissipated, as the caramel malt builds off of the ceded power of its fallen associates.

Like the best of the old-world Bamberg greats, and those who would emulate them, it's all smoke (forgive me) and mirrors with this one. More to the point, it's all smoke up front, before it wafts away to reveal a barely singed and hefty maltiness - all the more encouragement to get your bewildered palate back to the well. Yup, this is in the realm of the real deal - sorry Mr. Frosst [sic], more and more people are gonna find out about this.

L:brown like flat root beer
S: very cola, touch of root beer, a bit of smoke
T: pretty mild, a little smoky but more like a flat cola
F: med-low bodied and carbonation
O: a pleasant beer but I don't think it's really true to style; more like a smoked ale than a Rauchbier
