This black ale is the perfect balance of dark roasted malt and bright hop flavors. With bold and complex flavors at the forefront, this beer retains a remarkably clean finish.

Appearance - Very dark brown to black. Hard to be certain, but appears clear. Long-lived foamy off-white head.

Smell - A light aroma of indistinct malt and a goodly dose of floral hops.

Taste - Smokey malt, tastes of charcoal and coffee. Hops is surprisingly subdued, but present in a light herb and grapefruit finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium and creamy.

Overall - This beer is much smoother drinking than I anticipated. The flavors are rich, but balanced. The hop level seems like it might be a bit lower than many would expect from an IPA.

I have had this beer at the Brewery on tap and it was very good (4.5). At that time they were still working on the IBU's . I then picked up a six pack of bottles at a local (Madison WI) store, the taste was near as good 3.5. I had hoped this was because they still working on it. I was going to look for it again this December and see if the bottles improved.

Just an IPA, the "black" not such a big deal

Pours hazed medium to dark brown with a thin tan head. Some lacing sticks.

The smell is of chocolate with some roasted coffee and a vague touch of some leafy hops. Mild aroma.

The taste is of sweet chocolate, roast with firm bitter balance in the finish. Very slight alcohol shows late. Malt and hops blend well together.

It is medium to full bodied with carbonation level giving it a silky texture.

A nice interpretation of a hoppier black ale. I think the malt and hops blend well together.

Poured from bottle into glass - nice black/dark brown color with modest head. The hops overrides the dark malt both in smell and taste, but the hops become more subdued in the aftertaste, allowing the darker notes to linger and then become more prominent. The mouthfeel is light, but I think it works well for this beer making it more of a sessionable affair instead of the juggernaut it could be. This is an enjoyable beer overall, but I think I would prefer a better balance between the hops and the roasted malt. This is one of the first batches so the recipe may experience tweaks in the coming months.

Balanced malt & hops in the nose reveal a rich roasty caramel chocolate aroma with a hint of dark fruit and citrus. Black color with a light brown head. Nice lacing. Rich toasted coffee/caramel and a nice creamy mouthfeel with medium carbonation settles down to a chocolaty citrusy dry finish. Very drinkable.

Murky brown, nice initial head that leaves curtains of lace.

Mostly coffee, chocolate and roasted notes in the nose, with a vague piney hop finish.

Initial porter-like roasted notes, coffee, chocolate, caramel, fading out to a strong grapefruit note.

Mouthfeel a bit light for me.

This was nice, the dark and hop notes tended to fight each other than blend at certain phases as it warmed, but overall I enjoyed it.

Pours a huge, dense, tan head that laces nicely. A nice, floral bouquet of hops. Burnt umber color. Starts with a bitter, hoppy front with an additional toasted element, which builds. Notes of grapefruit as it hits a medium bitterness. Finish is a hop bitterness lingering over toasted malt.

Not bad. Good malt presence, but I'm not sure how well the hop bitterness and toasted malt work in this one. It's pretty good.

A good, solid beer. Not too bitter for a dark ale. Too bad they're not making this anymore.

Served: 19 Jul 2014

Appearance: Dark brown with a one finger light brown head. Head sticks around for some time.

Smell: Slight notes of coffee along with a confident assertion of hops. More hops than malt in the nose.

Taste: Unlike the smell, the taste is dominated by the roasted malts. The malts provide big notes of dark, french roasted coffee or chocolate covered espresso beans. The hops are there and can be tasted on the back end of a sip, providing some spicy and citrusy zest. The hops provide good, round bitterness to offset some of the inherent sweetness from such a malt-driven beer.

Mouthfeel: Excellent carbonation to provide a slight boost to the medium body. This black IPA doesn't have a massive body, which is great.

Overall: One of the best black IPAs I've had, and one I would definitely recommend.

Dark Voyage Black IPA pours a black color with a small lacing head. There is a coffee and bourbon like aroma. The taste has a nice burnt hop flavor, with notes of coffee and bourbon. Good flavorful beer, good body. Overall a very nice complex black IPA.

Capital Brewery Dark Voyage Black IPA

Tasting notes originally from 2/13/14. Had this on tap at the Nitty Gritty. This was served chilled in a shaker pint glass.

A) The lighting in the bar wasn't ideal, but this appeared to be a dark brown with a finger of frothy light tan head. Nice retention... Not much lacing.

S) Heavy dose of roast... Some light pine. A bit herbal/earthy...

T) Mostly roasted malt. Distant chocolate, and light pine. All the toasted malt kind of dominates the flavor.

M) Medium body with no carbonation issues. Pretty smooth... Goes down easy enough from a mouthfeel perspective. Okay aftertaste...

O) This was okay... Less roast and more hops would be about the simplest way to describe how I felt. Black Top from New Glarus is a much better representation of this style in my opinion.
