Served in a Chicago Bears shaker pint glass.

So Capital nixed the Summer Fest idea in favor of a hef. Good choice, if you ask me (which no one did). Anyway, this stuff pours a cloudy auburn topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises orange zest, mild banana, a hint of brown sugar, and a pinch of clove. The taste brings in more of the same, with the orange shining brightly amongst a cloud of pleasant spices. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a smooth, nearly creamy feel. Overall, a damn fine hef. 'Nuff said.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy golden orange with a lots of fast rising bubbles. Big three finger white head with good retention. Decent amount of lacing is left on the glass.

Smell: Has that distinctive Hef aroma of wheat and malts. Wheat grains and bready pale malts with good hints of cracker and biscuit. Nice hints of bubblegum, yeast, banana, clove, coriander, and a little white pepper. Also some good hints of citrus lemon and orange. Pretty nice wheat smell.

Taste: Like the smell, a crisp Hefeweizen taste of wheat and malts. Notes of bready biscuit, cereal grains, and cracker with some citrus lemon and orange. In the mix is a taste of banana, bubblegum, clove, yeast, and a little coriander and pepper. Somewhat sweet and tart, with a nice kick of spice. A nice tasting wheat beer.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a medium to high amount of carbonation. Crisp, spicy, and somewhat tart. Goes down very easy.

Overall: A good take on the Hefeweizen style. Some nice spice and citrus flavors.

Had a tap in a plastic pint glass...note to self: I am reviewing the style (IOW, Dave, you do not like hefeweizens!).

A=Rich, darker golden color with nice fluffy white foam.

S=Citrus, with a hint of wheat.

T=As hefeweizens go, this was rather robust...strong citrus and wheat tastes...good for the style.

M=Seemed about right, but was rather hard for me to drink...might have been due to the style, but, more likely, due to the overwhelming flavors.

O=Great representation of the style, I believe.

From: Friar Tuck's in Savoy, IL
Date: None, "15012PA2W0929" stamped on bottom
Glass: Weihenstephaner weizen glass

Capital's Weizen is an interesting version of the style, in that it seems to offer many enjoyable, robust aspects in the flavor (emphasis on malt and banana esters), but has a somewhat off-putting aroma throughout. I'd be curious to try this again, perhaps I had an off bottle, but with numerous hefeweizen offerings, I'm unlikely to give this another chance ("C/C+" in class for the style).

Pours a dense head of slightly off-white bubbles that is only about three centimeters, a bit short for the style. The head has fairly good retention for the style, lasting a few minutes, gradually falling to a 0.5cm cap atop the body of the beer, leaving some modest lacing as it does so. The body is hazy, nearly opaque, and a faded golden orange-yellow in color. Carbonation is marginally visible through the haze of the body.

Aroma is a bit strange at first, offering subdued yeast, wheat malt, and banana-like esters with a stronger emphasis on phenolics and a strange processed-meat aroma that is overly pronounced. With time, the processed-meat aroma reduces, and I'm left with a more pleasant, slightly toasted wheat malt aroma combined with very modest bananas and yeast.

Taste opens with fairly bland wheat malt with modest banana esters and yeast flavors. Mid-palate sees the flavor opening up a bit, bringing out quite good banana and hefeweiss yeast aspects, along with a slight toasted nature to the malt. Closes out with a substantial banana bread flavor, a bit of diacetyl, and bubblegum. Lingering aftertaste is of ripe bananas and modest yeast.

Beer is medium bodied with a slight wateriness around the edges. Carbonation is pleasantly mid- to high-mid level, balancing out the body's weight and the beer's sweetness. Finish is dry, slightly tart, which easily invites taking another sip.

Had on tap at the brewery, One of the best Hefe's I've had in along time. Very prominent banana flavor along with nice balance of clove and wheat along with just a hint of citrus. Just got back from touring the brewery It's a small operation but man do they turn out some good quality brews and all of their special release brews are done in Oak Kegs.

Capital's new Summer seasonal and a perfect style. Cap hasn't made a Weizen in quite some time, I hope it's as good as it used to be -- even as a Krystalweizen, which this new one is not.

A -- Hazy, pale straw color with a sudsy, somewhat lackluster, white head -- a more vigorous pour with the swish of sediment remedies the lackluster head a little.

S -- Wonderful bubblegum & light clove phenols with the mildest of wheat malt peeking through. Also from the vigorous pour comes some light DMS.

T -- Light clove and bubblegum flavors up front with a mildly tart finish and some light bready malt making up the backbone. Aftertaste is that creamy vanilla character so common in a good Weizen, with some light peppery, clove characters, even some pleasant tart citrus.

M -- Soft mouthfeel with some creaminess and light spritziness from carbonation. Body is light.

O -- Homerun for the style -- right up there with its neighbor Dancing Man. Worth seeking out if you like a good Bavarian Weizen.
