Appearance: Pours a pale yellow with a fair amount of suspended yeast sediment. It's white head starts out small and quickly fades to a very thin, incomplete cap. I'm suprised by how small the head is, consider it's style.

Smell: The aroma is extremely fresh and grainy smelling, with a big shot of banana-like esters, tart wheat, and clove. There's a good amount of spiciness that helps to round out the typical weizen nose on this brew.

Taste: Spicy and tart with the standard banana and spicy, phenolic clove flavors. I get the impression of freshness from the wheat and slight graininess. The yeast adds a bit of musty breadiness. Finishes clean and crisp. A well rounded, if not a bit thin, example of the style.

Mouthfeel: It's a bit thin in mouthfeel, as it lacks that smooth thickness that's one of the hallmarks of the style. The carbonation is about right, but it's lacking in body.

Drinkability: A few minor flaws aside, this is a good American-made example of a traditional hefeweizen. It's certainly a welcome alternative to the boring, mostly flavorless American-style wheat ales most U.S. micros are churning out these days.

Pours out of the bottle a nice cloudy orange/yellow with not much head on my pour at least. The smell is a nice mix of lemons, bananas, cloves and peppercorns. Light citrusy tones float in and out.

The first sip is like a loaf of bread freshly baked with citrus and spice. The cloves and peppercorns come through in the taste along with a doughy banana undercurrent. Damn tasty and not overpowering.

Mouthfeel is good as well. Body could be a wee bit thicker for me, but this goes down easy all the same. Drinkability is good here for sure. I recommend picking up a six pack and enjoying this quality hefe from Wisconsin!

Another review from back in the Marquette days. Typical hefe appearance, yellow, dense haze, average head. Solid banana yeast aroma, lays low on the clove, bready.

Pale wheat flavor, banana, banana gum, lacks any hopping it seems. Like how it is a degree chewy, but light bodied. Pretty much ends it there. No other subtleties to speak of. Banana beer. Was looking for some nuttiness to it. Mildly carbonated, would have appreciated more, would have made the banana heavy beer a little more palatable.

Not bad, but not recommended, if this was a style you're into, I can think of a dozen other offerings I'd mention first.

I'm not a big fan of this style, wheat beers have a somewhat lemony taste that usually seems sour to me...this is one of my favorites of the style (reminds me of the Penn Brewing wheat on tap)...nice, consistent haze, good straw/estery (leaning toward the banana) flavor balance and a smooth (not sour) finish...

(Served in a short Weizen glass)

A- This beer had a bright yellow crystal clear body until the last ounce of beer with a large lump of yeast fell into the glass. There was a big carbonation and the only head was a mass of a few large bubbles.

S- This beer had the strong smell of banana taffy with a light smooth wheat bread hint in the background. Not much depth to the smell.

T- The taste of dry pale malt has a light banana flavor the comes through more after it warms a bit. The finish has a carbonic acid/ club soda taste with a light hop hint.

M- The mouthfeel is light with a dry finish.

D- This beer has a big banana smell with a light dry taste and is not at all what I expected from this style. It would be nice if it had a bit more depth and character all though it is an interesting twist on this style.

Possibly my favorite for the style and from the brewery. Even though hefeweizens tend to be a monolithic group, that is, one does not differ much from the next, I find Cap Brewery's offering to stack up well against, and may even surpass many of the classics (Paulaner, Hacker).
You know what you are getting here: hazy staw, fruit (banana) esters. Clove and banana on the tongue. Nice subtle malt background to provide support.
Glad this is a year round style rather than the typical summer seasonal. Though I tend to gravitate toward this during the hotter months, it is a nice change of pace from the robust beers that dominate my cold weather drinking patterns.
This review may make the beer and the style seem mediocre, but that is far from the case. Quite a nice brew here.

Thanks to FlyingBison for coming through on this. Like an American pale wheat that has a sourness, only more aggressive wheat and carbonation. This is not a smooth hefeweizen, i.e. Town Hall. I could not finish the Capital version.Spice is sour lemon and pepper.

appearance: poured into a hefe glass...a dark and cloudy copper-amber body, 1/2" creamy beige head with great retention...a rather dark hefe but an impressive appearance regardless

smell: big yeast aromas, pear banana, tropical fruit, well spiced, grassy citrus hops, decent but typical aroma

taste: fall out from the aroma....big and yeasty, banana and other tropical fruit, peppery spice, light grassy hops, touch of vanilla. Not the finest hefe but an interesting interpretation

mouthfeel: medium body, lemony zing

drinkability: pretty high

Odd little beer, maybe I had an off bottle. The wheat is apparent when I crack the crown. Light amber-orangey color under the usual light head. I got a taste of cherry and lemon more than the traditional banana, maybe a hint of clove. Seemed more like a Belgian than anything German, but still very enjoyable. I'll have to try to find another one sometime soon.

Another bottle brought to me by a returning friend.

Poured into a weizen glass and wondered at the appearance. Head profile at first promised something, but never quite got started and what did faded to just a ring. Color was a pretty light yellow shade as well.

However, the aroma was rather nice and surprising. I could sense the phenol-ester liquid awaiting inside. Yep, banana-clove was there and pleasing.

Must say a "not bad" on this one. Never know what you get here in the good ole US when it comes to the range of wheats (though by its name, my assumptions that it would be of the Bavarian style where not disappointed).

Gold/tawny hue, slightly hazy, small white head, no lace. The appearance of this beer is lacking for a Hefeweizen. Banana nominates the nose, faint peppery notes, some lemon hints, surprisingly potent, inviting. Lovely palate; tart, wheaty-yeast, some clove, banana with very minor spice and a whisper of vanilla. The body is way too thin! Smooth carbonation. This beer is very drinkable and worthwhile, try one… just don’t expect a true Hefeweizen… it is close though.

Well, now I feel freakin' stupid.

Why?

Because I lived in Wisconsin for most of my life, yet I never tried this beer!

But that isn't the point of a review, so let's get to it:

In my experience, the only hefe-weizens worth drinking in America come from Wisconsin. I'm not saying that there aren't other good weizens out there, maybe I just haven't had them yet. Of those in Wisconsin, I've got to say the top of the line really and truly are (in no particular order): Sprecher's Hefe-Weiss, Great Dane's Crop Circle Wheat, New Glarus's Copper-Kettle Weiss, and Capital Kloster Weizen.

Now, each of these beers is so radically different from the next that to compare them to each other simply wouldn't make sense. Like any good German beer, each one is complex enough and unique enough to really place it in a category all its own.

But onto the Capital offering in specific:

The pour is a little bit of a letdown. The beer is very clear, like a krystal weizen. There is some chill-haze, but no real yeast. In fact, I am 90% certain this *is* a krystal-weizen, so I will review it henceforth as such. But the lack of yeast isn't the only letdown, the head is also rather pathetic. The beer looked undercarbonated for a weizen and to top things off, the head faded into nothingness far too quickly. The beer is also a pinch too dark -- probably the munich malt. It loses on persentation, but oh boy does it make up for that later on!

But, ahhh, one quick smell and I am back in business. This beer emphasizes the 'banana' aspect of weizens, and I am very much OK with that. A nice bubbly mix of esters and some spiciness from the wheat and barley. Good stuff all around.

And the taste! Rich and malty with a good dose of banana in there. Why didn't sprecher try to make mbege with this yeast rather than with cheap banana extract? A pity indeed. This tastes like a nice banana. Strangely, there is a strong presence from the barley in this beer, especially the rich nutty munich malt. I am totally OK with that, especially since the grainy malts capital uses compliment the slightly metallic finish. Ahhh, and with that, the beer comes to a nice pleasant, slightly lingering, close.

The mouthfeel is pretty much perfect. Enough of it sticks to your mouth that you know it is there, but it isn't thick or cloying. Ahhh, great stuff.

Drinkability? Bring on the mass krugs, baby. Next time I drink this beer I plan to do it by the liter!

One of my favorite styles of beer! It poured a small sized white head with fine-medium sized bubbles that was mostly lasting. The body of this beer was slightly cloudy which is typical of this style of beer with fizzy carbonation and golden hue. The nose consisted of clove, banana and spice with a sweet and sour taste to it. The mouthfeel was smooth, thin and a bit watery and it was light bodied. There was good lacing with this beer.

From the bottle pours a hazy golden color with a thin white head. I could not get much of a head on this beer, and what was there disappeared quickly. No lace on the glass as the beer disappeared. Smells slightly lemony, and grainy. Taste is a good sourness and tartness. Not very yeasty as some German offerings, and I thought maybe a bit too tart. Light body with high carbonation appropriate to style. Overall, a good offering. Very refreshing.

Dark gold or light orange in color with light prickle and no head to speak of. The nose throws off banana hints. There is a fruity attack and spicy undertones to the flavor. The finish is clean surprisingly. The spice does leave a mild warmth in the mouth that is more pronounced than a normal residual clove flavor would be, but it still manages to give me the impression of a clean finish as nothing lingers for too long.

A dead-on version of the German style. Poured a lightly hazy golden. Aroma of cloves smacks you right between the eyes. Almost over the top with yeasty clove flavors atop a fluffy wheat malt. I usually think of a hefe as a summer drink, but the agressive yeast spice flavors were on-par with any spiced winter ale. A very nice beer and can hold its own with the imports.

12 oz bottle. This one is plain yellow with the Wisconsin Capital building. Golden yellow cloudy color. Full rich creamy head. Full on yeast wheat beer taste, lots of bananas and yeast flavors everywhere. Tart, and creamy, some cloying stickiness to it. Brown yeast sediment adds some character. Overall the wheat flavors are there, I think I need to remember to drink these wheat beers sooner. Just a touch thin. A good thirst quenching wheat beer.

Hazy dark yellow hue, topped by a persistant, moderately thick bumpy head. Grainy, tart wheat and spicy clove in aroma, accompanied by mellow bubblegum and banana esters. Clean, but spot on aromawise for style. Light sweetness upfront in flavor, followed by tartness and bready grain. Yeast esters are understated and comprised of light banana. Spicy clove phenol and mild yeast must undertones add depth to the flavor profile. A bit light in body, lacking that satisfying proteinaceous mouthfeel of a good hefeweizen. Finishes clean, grainy and somwehat dry. Kloster, although a bit tame all around in malt and yeast character, is well balanced and flavorful enough for good quaffability.

Not my favourite style of brew. However my BA expieriences have taught me to judge a brew for what it is.
This particular offering poured a cloudy golden brew with medium light carbonation.
The nose was lightly of lemon. The taste also of lemon with a sweetish linger to it.
Started strong but finished short despite the linger.
Body was medium/full with very limited crown disapating to nothing.

12oz bottle obtained as part of BIF 10 from Garymuchow. Thanks for the opportunity...

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed 3/4" white head over the cloudy golden brew. Head is not too resilient, but better than most weizens, and lacing is very good. Aroma is slightly clove-y, with ample wheat presence, what I would expect. Taste is quite upfront with a sourness, not in a bad way, but certainly not to be ignored. Flavor fades to a level which presents the primary wheat and light clove characters. Mouthfeel is good, and drinkability is even a bit better. Makes me nostalgic for the summer that has faded away right before my eyes...

Dark gold color, small white head, which does not stick to the glass very much, if at all. Smell is pretty standard for a hefe, bananas and cloves, maybe a little grassy malt. Taste is smooth and non-threatening. The flavors are all very muted, and blend together. Not a bad beer, but nothing to write home about. I do think it could have used more carbonation, as well.

This brew pours a cloudy pale orange color with no head. In fact, there isn't even enough lacing to coat the top of the liquid. The aroma is rather strong. Bubblegum, bananas, and more bubblegum. It is not really what I expect from a Hefe, or any other wheat beer for that matter. The taste is a lot fainter than the aroma, but bubblegum still dominates. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice carbonation. Overall, this isn't a very good beer. I can't see myself buying it again.

12 oz brown longneck.

Beer pours a semi-hazy light gold. Decent head.

Beer smells like a hefe should, lots of spicy notes and with a little fresh citrus type aroma sneaks in behind the banana smell.

Taste is decent but a trifle sour. The clove & banana notes are nice and are balanced by the wheat backbone.

Carbonation may be a little to jacked-up. All-in-all an enjoyable but not outstanding hefe. Very easy to drink and could be a good one to introduce novices to this style with.

This hefe is a pretty decent domestic stab at the bavarian style of wheat beers.

The appearance is a hazy gold with very little head formation or retention, which is the biggest downfall of this beer.

There are some nice spicy tones in the aroma: cloves and phenolic tanginess.

The taste has a really nice subdued tartness with the appropriate sweetness and phenolic notes nicely balanced. Very tasty and thirst quenching.

Capital has brewed a very nice summer beer with its Kloster Weizen.
